Sea of Thieves casts off on its final beta voyage

23

This is it you pirates, scoundrels, and scallywags: Sea of Thieves’ final beta is upon us, and only the most cutthroat and dastardly will survive to see the dawn of launch.

The final beta is scheduled to run from today through Sunday on both Xbox One and PC. Because the team wants this test to run on a greater scale than the game has handled to date, the final beta is open to everybody who wants to come check it out.

The final beta build includes the new skeleton forts that adds PvE challenge to a daring crew. The team does want to stress that this is still a beta test and that there might very well be issues and on-the-fly adjustments happening. To stay up to date on what’s happening, the team advises that players keep track of the official Twitter feed.

And here’s a look at character creation in the current build courtesy of commenter DK. “Appears to be a decent chunk of added new ‘parts’ vs the previous test session’s variety,” he says. “More older and larger female bodies and faces in particular, but also plenty of new stuff for male avatars as well.”

Source: Twitter. Thanks DK!

Beware. A PVP only niche game already filled with the best that Human kind has to offer.

I love how some of the more heated threads get deleted from the beta forums in regards to game mechanics and warnings we give the devs.

Sadly, you cant fix stupid, and the devs will do what they want thinking they know best.

Be warned, this is a pvp gankfest with a lobby, not an MMO. Like a huge pvp arena without the fun for most gamers, just the akrydills that like ganking and get off on that sort of thing.

Purchase accordingly.

“Be warned, this is a pvp gankfest with a lobby….” Oddly I played the game all weekend and never seen a lobby. I had a Login Screen, Ship Selection, and load in but no Lobby. Lets also think about the term gankfest. Ganking is about killing or defeating other players with little to no effort. In Sea of Thieves all players are equal mechanically. All progression is Horizontal which boils down to cosmetics. At no time does another player yield an advantage that they haven’t created via smart strategy or a simple capitalization on an enemies mistake.

While I respect your opinion I think those who enjoy a game that requires team work to accomplish goals.

Those character models look great – a proper motley crew. I’d happily use any of those, but the fat ladies are particularly endearing.

I tried and quit after awhile, being forced into first person mode is a big no for me.
I just felt really uncomfortable not being able going into 3rd person and the excuses they give to not add it into the game are really weak honestly…

If this was a shooter like CoD, I could get it, but an online game with Open World? Why do they even to this, force their players into something without giving the option? Nice way to ruin a game.

“why was quake a first person game?”

They aren’t forcing you into First Person, the game was designed specifically for a first person perspective. This makes combat, navigation, even repairing a ship a more thrilling experience.

So this is pretty much everything the game will have at launch. And supposedly the first real content patch is slated for three months out.

Doesn’t look like there’s enough to really last interest for more than a month at best, and still nothing to deter PvP from overrunning everything. I feel like this beta will just be a preview of what’s to come with that.

Thar be rocky shoals ahead captain, arr.

It’s a pvp game, so “overrunning” is not an issue. Pvp is the main content. Everything else is filler for pvp. Target audience looks like 12-15 year olds, so probably not a game for old geezers that like mmorpgs.

And that mentality is exactly what will kill Sea of Thieves from gaining more than a niche audience.

The Final Beta did not have all the launch features. One of the 3 starting factions was locked as well as ship customization. The Kraken Encounter and event table were also disabled as the Final Beta was little more than a stress test. The real draw here is for socialization and or team work. A crew in theory can do 12 Voyages before the need to return to port. Every Voyage you complete increases in risk if you do not return to an outpost, as you stand to lose the treasures and resources you have collected. The thrill of island hoping when you already are sitting plush with 20+ treasure chests and seeing another ship in the distance is spectacular.

Okay so minus a few things that are for Pioneers to keep quiet about and not break NDA on.

Socialization is only going to happen between crewmates at best, there’s no point for people to not just shoot other ships/players on sight. Skeleton Fortresses wont’ be enough to encourage people to stop being assholes.

Yet during Beta I had an even mix of non-start fire fights and socialization. Sure you will find folks who will play this way as in any PvP experience. However vendettas are real. You will build up a reputation and will find yourself targeted by other players. Guilds and Alliances are going to be added. When I wasn’t loaded down my time in Outposts I ran into other crews and accept for one time everyone focused on buying and checking out the scenery versus just shooting each other.

I just don’t get the design of this system. Why not just let people customize the characters the way they’d like to?

I read they want it so each character is unique but if there are a specific combination of features you want your character to have you’re going to keep rerolling until you get that combination. It just turns the process into a hassle which either results in spending lot of time randomly generating options or regretting not spending time randomly generating options when you come across others with the feature combination you would have liked to have.

To add to that, I think it’s much more important for everyone to be happy and satisified with the avatar they will spending time playing versus each character being “unique”.

ye i was thinking for some folks this would take a bit shorter than normal systems but for others (like me) aloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooootttttttttt longer than normal.

which i’m not really a spend 10 hours on char creation kind of guy but i do like to get things to my particular specific tastes.

i think in the video it was the 2nd last roll i finally came across one i would use.

Why doesn’t everyone just give it a shot instead of complaining about it? People think every game these days should fit into their perfect idea of fun…..poppycock….you didn’t make this game, maybe they have reasons for doing some of these things….to bash them before even giving it a try is sad…So much time crying about how you can’t have a pirate look exactly how you want, instead of talking about the mechanics and the gameplay….this game looks awesome….

Kinda silly considering that almost all the posts on this forum since announcement of that feature have purely been slamming this game when I wager that 95% of you don’t even plan to play for fear of being “forced” to PvP…y’all will complain about anything…..your utopian theme park is never coming…learn to enjoy and accept new mechanics or piss off back to wow….

Take a deep breathe…

I don’t see how experiencing randomly generated characters differs in any way from watching characters being randomly generated. Will the experience of pressing the re-roll button drastically change anything?

They obviously have all the assets organized in a way that allows them to be randomly meshed together, I don’t understand why players aren’t able to mesh them together in a way that isn’t random. This has nothing to do with the rest of the game, the article specifically mentions the character customization system, which in my opinion is a bizarre hassle that could be avoided.

Actually I was considering giving the game a try. But the non personal control over my character was honestly a breaking point.

Same outlook I have on MMOs with gender locked classes. I tend not to play them because my character is a character I want to play that I personally feel connected to.

Some of us that play video games like the creativity in being able to craft a unique avatar to us. Other gamers (seems newer generations) dont necessarily care for a personal avatar and that is fine. But it doesn’t mean the rest of us are being close minded. We just feel as an MMO it is sort of going backwards in the evolution of game avatars when you take the individual choice away.

It sort of communicates the devs think they should dictate our characters and not us. So in a sense you are alienating a portion of the gaming community who might have been potential customers.

Gave the game a shot. Its a total rip for 60$. Maybe for 30$ for a lobby based pirate pvp game.

But even the money is nothing to me.

The only thing this game has going for it are the graphics and the ship combat. All other content might as well be made for 9 year olds.

Yes I wish I could customize more at the start versus the roulette well but honestly other than body type, gender, and face everything else is changeable once you get in game. Hair styles, facial Hair, eye patches, hooks, shirts, pants, hats, shoes….ect are all purchasable in game. I ran into a picturesque female model last night wearing a fancy dress and big hat. When she turned around though she had a mustache and goatee! The also added a save feature so you can mark models during roulette that you like so you can keep generating but still have the option to use the mark model if you can’t find anything else you like.
