Star Trek Online will make a 3-D model of your ship for hundreds of dollars

For Star Trek Online captains who have fallen deeply in love with their starship of choice, now they can take that ship out of the game and into their real world. Cryptic Studios announced this week that it is now offering a 3-D ship printing service for players who want an actual physical model of their in-game vehicle to put on display.

If they have the cash on hand, players have a few options for their starship replica. They can opt for an unpainted “primer version” of the ship for $200 that can be hand-painted by the player, a single-color version for $225, or a full-color collectible version for $350.

Cryptic notes that these costs “may vary” according to ship size and that a display stand comes with each model. Additionally, a few models, such as the multi-mission science vessels, are not available to print. The company handling the models, Mixed Dimensions, will wait for 100 orders at a time, so there could be a wait for a ship to be printed and shipped.

I’m all for giving the option for players, but the quality of the model (seams, bumpiness) and painting (uneven lines) leaves a lot to be desired (additional ref besides the video: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/ls55Snu2RU8/maxresdefault.jpg). Getting your own custom ship is cool, no doubt, but quality isn’t quite there for the asking prices.

I love Star Trek, I love playing Star Trek Online, and I love my ship(s) in Star Trek Online. This is news to no one who reads my yabber here …

… but the prices on these items are a bit too high for me to justify to my bank account. So, to me, they’re cool, but “not for that kind of money, thanks” cool.

My opinion anyway,

Cheers,

Agreed. If the level of ship customization in the game was truly extensive, then i can maaaaybe justify the money, especially if i’m really attached to that specific ship. But as it stands now, it’s simply too much money for something that probably looks the same just like the next player’s.

Least it’s not sinking lots of money into digital ships for a game not released yet…

The citizens of Puerto Rico could use that money more than you can use a hunk of plastic collecting dust on your shelf or whatever.

Yep, and children in the slums of Venezuela could definitely use that money to finally be able to eat. Or what about kids in Africa, they are clearly in need of medication and clean water! Syrian refugees? Or…

It’s unfair to make people feel guilty about enjoying their lives by plugging in somebody else’s needs. There is always going to be somebody who compared to us has it worse. Does that mean that we should question every purchase we make, or feel guilty about every indulgence we enjoy?

Well, put, Loopy. I can only add that the fallacious argument you expose also presumes that people who buy these items don’t also give money to charities or other helpful causes.

Me, I support Love146.org Not patting myself on the back with the mention — just putting their name out there in case anyone reading might be interested in helping as well..

Cheers!

Unpainted version is more than I expected, but the full custom is less.

Alas, I still won’t have the money for a long, long time.

EDIT: Arg, and I mainly fly Multimission Science Vessels. So no ships at all for me. :(

Is it sad that I would use this to create a bog-standard Klingon D-7 class battle cruiser from the Original Series? Yes. Yes, it would be. Will I do it anyway? Very possibly.

I made models all the time in my teens. At no point did the models I assembled look anything like the pictures on their boxes. The surfaces of the completed models were liberally encrusted with glue, as was I. I have a scar burned through one eyebrow from some freak reaction with the glue when I was 17.

Painting models and minatures was even worse.

Common sense and frugality tell me to make a model. A desire to have it look like a Klingon D-7 tell me otherwise.

There plenty of people who will Build and Paint it for you check Etsy.

Understand completely, though the great thing about the ship you want is it has no detail whatsoever. You could probably just dip it in a can of grey paint and it would be studio perfect.

This was me, as well. I tried to model-make, but most of what I did ended up looking like something a real model-maker might produce while drunk and/or high. For all my efforts, I never really improved, either.

Certainly not an impulse purchase. But the quality looks like it’s worth the price. Five months until my birthday, maybe I’ll spring for one.

This is a money making venture I can get behind. Doesn’t affect the game and is just really cool if it floats your…spaceship.
