Dead Man’s Country throws you into the teeth of the American west

Have a pioneering spirit and wouldn’t mind stepping back in time to see how you’d do on the frontier in the late 1800s? Then saddle up with Dead Man’s Country, a new multiplayer open-world RPG that’s slathered with old west flavor.

The game is clearly putting its setting up front as a selling point: “Face the untamed harshness of the wild in a landscape of vast forests, soaring mountains and desolate plains.”

With randomly generated items, a deep crafting system, housing, abandoned forts, farming, hunting, taming, multiplayer matches, there’s plenty to do. It’s not quite the historic old west, however, because you’ll also be facing the plague and zombies (survivalboxes gotta have them zombies).

Players can pick from among PvP, PvE, and custom realms. Those who want to fight over something substantial can clash over water rights, which each farmer will need to thrive.

Dead Man’s Country is currently in a pre-alpha state and has posted a roadmap of the development to come.

Crafting, Farming, Hunting, Taming, Housing…Hell Yes! COlor me intrigued indeed. Though I do agree with NeoWolf about Native Americans. I’d love to make my character native. I recently started Wasteland 2 and made a custom squad with half the team being Native American (My Leader and my Medic)

The Old West and PVE are both mentioned so im interested especially as WWO seems to only want to be a PVP game.

The building side of things in open world appeals to me (conan exiles for example), butthis seems to be largely limited to just a single house if their website is to be believed, which is a shame as I’d be wanting to build forts and towns etc..

Also a little disappointing that Native Americans don’t seem to get a mention in any playable shape?

Still, early days..will keep an eye on it.

Here I thought it sounded like it had a lot of potential to be interesting (I liked a lot of what Merryweather, based on Lewis and Clark, did) but then… zombies. Likely lots of uncontrolled PvP involved given the “posse and gang system.”

So, given a lack of ability to play without having to deal with twelve groups of wanna-be badasses trying to murder anyone around, and the zombies being such a constant and overdone thing, I’m going to say that it loses a lot of interest from me.

“…because you’ll also be facing the plague and zombies (survivalboxes gotta have them zombies).”

What we need is survivalbox where we play zombies trying to survive all those humans that wants to destroy them. Why do they always get picked on? o.O

With a title like – “Dead Man’s Country”; why wouldn’t you expect Zombies? Honestly it seems they are indeed going for more of a “The Walking Dead” vibe then a “Wild West Frontier” vibe.

Zombies.
Hard, intense pass.

Yeah, I was pretty excited until that line. Full stop.

I hate games where zombies are the most important feature. Sure it’s OK if it’s an RPG like Diablo or something where 5% of the enemies in the world are zombies, but anything beyond that is outright boring.

When I read the line it read like – lets put in everything and hope something sticks.

be zombies or be a western. Don’t be both unless you are doing an event or dlc like Red Dead did.

my 2 cents
