Did you miss last weekend’s Defiance 2050 closed beta? Good news for you; Trion is doing another one – this very weekend, in fact. Aaaaand it won’t just be for PC players this time.

“The Defiance 2050 PC closed beta weekend was a huge success, with thousands of players jumping to see what the upcoming reimagining of the landmark sci-fi shooter will hold for players when it releases this summer. Trion Worlds is thrilled to reveal that a second closed beta test will be underway this weekend, welcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players into the fold! From April 27 through 29, hop into the Defiance 2050 closed beta to experience the riveting shooter gameplay and great environments that will await you when the game launches.”

Massively OP’s MJ Guthrie checked out the funsies yesterday before the last beta wound down – check out the replay for a glimpse of how it plays:

Until Trion actually says wtf the longterm goals/plans are for adding new stuff to this game, I don’t see the point in bothering with it. It just screws over their existing audience by making them go through all the old hoops, likely without all the promotional/purchased stuff obtained in Defiance. Then like RIFT Prime they get to resell stuff that people already bought once.

Just a quick PSA for veteran players;

I played several hours of the last beta weekend. This is nothing but a hype builder for the console release… If you have time, money and effort put into the PC version, don’t bother. There is nothing here for us. The “improvements” are not worth the switch IMO. On the other hand, if you’re a new player, there is no reason not to pick this, newer version over the old version. The engine is exactly the same, though it’s possible that they updated a few textures here and there. Again, not worth the switch for veteran players…

I guess my big gripe considering what I just stated is that this is going to split the player base of the PC version, and isn’t necessary. Nothing that is in the “new” version couldn’t be patched into the old version that I could see, again, exact same engine.

Been seeing this sentiment a lot and honestly…while I was considering giving it a go anyways after seeing some of the feedback/video from over the past weekend I’ll probably skip this altogether.

Without any new content confirmed or anything I don’t see any reason to replay the same game with some minor token improvements. Kinda disappointed, but I guess that just frees up some time I was mentally setting aside to play it. So that’s nice.

Yeah, Trion’s lack of information on this is shooting themselves in the feet as usual. There’s obviously the thought that maybe we’ll be getting stuff in 2050 that wasn’t possible due to the limitations of the previous consoles (as Trion appears to be unwilling to drop support for those systems just yet), but Trion hasn’t actually stated whether or not that’ll happen.

They are pretty much just trying to do what the secret world did. Reboot a struggling franchise, in hopes for new blood to join (get suckered) in.

TSW added new content however, while not a massive content update, it was a content update non the less.

Will this game get new stories and maps? Who knows.

SWL didn’t add content, in fact they had less content at its launch than TSW did. Only over the course of like 6-9 months did they catch back up to TSW, and only recently have they finally begun adding in new content + started on Season 2 or whatever.

Yeah i know alot of pissed off beta players saying this so called update is BS.

The last beta made me have zero interest in this “re-release”. After finding out first hand that is the SAME exact game, Trion is really on my official blacklist now.

This “new” version is basically for all those gamers that werent around for the original games release, with just barely enough visual improvements to make them not vomit in their mouth (but instead they will just say “ew gross”. )

Honestly… and I cant believe im suggesting this… people are better off getting Destiny 2 on sale, and playing that instead. Its actually a (shudders) better game.

I thought the same too. “Wow, it LOOKS better but… okay? what exactly -changed-.” Admittedly my memory of the original is fuzzy, but unlike say, the TSW / SWL “reimagining” which had some drastic system changes..I see and feel nothing different here.

After finding out first hand that is the SAME exact game, Trion is really on my official blacklist now.

This confuses me because I’ve seen this type of reaction a LOT from gamers and even some MMO press…was there ever any official word that it was anything other than a relaunch of the game with the same content and some minor improvements? I mean yeah, the graphical updates aren’t exactly amazing and the systems/mechanics changes aren’t terribly deep from what I’ve seen, but with regards to the content I don’t recall Trion ever saying that it would be anything other than than what’s currently in the game now.

No one ever said “Its a new game” You are 100% right.

They did say however:
(from the official announcement here https://www.trionworlds.com/defiance/en/2018/02/27/announce/ )

“As you explore the reimagined Defiance universe…”

“you’ll experience new gameplay systems for character progression, loadout customization, and much more!”

“We are thrilled to announce the next chapter in the Defiance universe”

From the Producers letter here:

Producer’s Letter: Defiance 2050 Announcement

“We’ve been working to take Defiance to a whole new level and fully reimagine what can be done with a massive online shooter game unlike any other. No single update or patch could accomplish this, so are taking Defiance into the future through a new experience.”

“Nothing will be the same, as we are working to reinvent game changing systems. ”

So while you wont find “Its a new game” in any of that text, much of what they DO say, is easily seen, and is obviously being hyped and marketed as, “a new game” and a new experience. Upgrading the games textures doesnt make it a re-imagined or new experience.

If you played the original version, then you have seen and done everything that 2050 has to offer. Period.

Thank you for that explanation (and the sources)! I’ve seen complaints, too, and was confused as well. But seeing your quotes makes me understand how it sounds like a “new game” or “reimagined game” even.

I’ve seen some of their Twitch streams and only saw it as a relaunch with some better UI (though I’ve not really noticed this in the beta, so maybe this was wishful thinking on my part), better graphics and maybe new stuff/content in the future.

Yeah when you tell me you’ve “reimagined” the game and given it a new title, I expect something very different from the previous one. This isn’t a reimagining, it’s a damn retread.

Yeah the only thing of note (so far) is that the EGO Grid was removed in favor of compartmentalizing the four main chunks of it into 4 classes with Borderlands-esque talent trees.

I doubt much will change on the player end, but I sure hope that it does and for the better. Because from what I was reading/seeing the “improvements” sure seem super minimal and even smaller in scope than SWL.

MAYBE they’ll add more stuff before launch since this is currently ‘closed beta’ implying that they may spend some months before launching it proper, but honestly who the hell knows. Trion sure as heck isn’t communicating anything.
