Here’s how Defiance 2050’s class unlocks work as the closed beta resumes today

As previously announced, Trion is running another Defiance 2050 beta event this weekend, this time including console players along with PC players. Worth noting is that Trion is also selling founder packs. “Get a head start at launch and check out the variety of Defiance 2050 Founder’s Packs filled items including an amazing ATV, special titles, unique classes, slick outfits, and much more!” the studio writes. “PC Players now have the opportunity to unlock the Founder’s Packs, but keep in mind these items will be available when head start begins and not during closed beta. Have a blast with the new Demolitionist class and get an explosive 3-day head start before launch.”

At least one of the packs is a “class pack” that includes the Assault, Assassin, Guardian, and Combat Medic classes, plus their gear; that led some players to believe the classes won’t be freely unlockable in the game. That’s not the case, however, as Trion explained on Twitter.

“At launch, you can select 1 of 4 base classes (Assault, Assassin, Guardian, Combat Medic) for your character and you can unlock them by playing or by purchasing a pack. We’re also adding a premium class, Demolitionist!”

I’d like to think that such transparent desperation move is a hint that Trion are scrapping the bottom of the barrel, and an announcement of a chapter 13 could happen any time soon

one can dream, right?

Anyone who is willing to buy the founders packs for this is either someone who never played the game before or just someone who has more money that common sense. For someone who owns the original game on PC and has played the “new” version, it is the same game with less options in reality. They didn’t add anything to the game accept a new way to grind out upgrades. The class system wasn’t really needed in this game, something they forced into it. The graphics from what I could see on PC at least where no better than before. Maybe for someone who was playing on a console they may be better but not someone who plays on PC. Overall this just feels like a cash grab and a FU to the people that already bought the game.

Yeah, people who bought packs in the original game lose everything, not to mention the people who spent tons on all their idiotic lootboxes for progression. This isn’t a new game, it’s a small patch on the original, no new content, and a complete and transparent cash grab.

Not to mention the game was originally buy to play, some old players bought one of the original 3 editions for either $60, $100, or $150. That was before all the DLC too, so they were just buying the base game lots of people got free later. They got screwed over once by Trion already, I wonder if Trion plans to make it up to them somehow (doubtful).

I can’t help but think of Firefall. The game Em-8ER is being made by a completely new studio and is a 100% completely new game, and yet people who bought original Firefall founder packs are getting 100% free founder packs of the same value in Em-8ER just because the studio head is the same and he feels that’s the right thing to do.

Trion is re-launching the same game over with minimal changes. Are they at least going to give those original purchasers founder packs worth their original purchase? It’s highly unlikely that’s even crossed their minds.

I actually still somehow respected Trion as a company before this. I have to say they still *could* do things that could gain my respect in the re-launch but so far I’m not hearing that they’ve decided to. If they had made the right choices “You were an original purchaser so you get a Founder Pack free!” we would have heard about that by the time they started to sell the Founder Packs. I see they’re selling them, and we haven’t heard of anything like that.

This is ridiculous, they’re re-selling all the same stuff again to the same people. When The Secret World went free to play into Secret World Legends – nobody had to re-buy anything that they had purchased before. All old purchases were transferred into the new game, and anything else was simply given away to everybody for free. Anything extra that came with the old purchases (vanity pets that sort of stuff) was transferred into the new game for the people.

Trion doesn’t seem to care how to do the thing right and take care of the old players. I guess I’m sick of defending them and blowing money on their stuff now. I might quite often be a doormat, but I’m not someone who is going to be so easily outright exploited.

“Not only do we want you to bend over and take it, but we want *you* to pay *us*!” Piss off Trion.

Because Kern screwed up, and he knew these people needed a bait because Firefall was going nowhere. So he tossed them a bone. It wasn’t because “he felt was the right thing to do”, because if that was the case, he wouldn’t started the avalanche of bullshit on Red5, in the first place.

I played today on PS4.

If console was your choice before, is a decent upgrade. The game was obviously made for console first. It’s just more responsive versus PC.

Former PS3 players: the game actually looks semi-modern now.

The introduction sequence was basically the same as the OG Defiance, other than the use of a buffed up weapon to clear the baddies easily.

It’s a more streamlined experience, character wise. Cleaner looking graphics overall. However, it is basically the same game with some “polished” touches.

Will be some solid fun for a new player.

Did anyone really think that this was anything other than a cash grab?

I don’t get it, people are saying that the game is exactly the same as the old one, so what’s the point of this besides them making money?

As a former PS3 player, the game doesn’t look like garbage now.

Selling classes in the cash shop like they did with Devilian … What a joke.

Since the game is completely free, how do you propose that they pay the bills?

Look at Path Of Exile. Make your opinion around that.

I don’t know but it’s clearly working. It’s F2P system is applauded across the internet, and they keep pushing decent content.

Selling cosmetic gear/skill effects and bank space/organizers for loot drops. A large contributor to their success at free-to-play is people don’t feel bad spending money on their cash shops items as it supports the game and the content they put out (for absolutely free) multiple times a year is astounding.

Free players can unlock the classes, supposedly. The problem is the wording behind it, calling it Premium, really makes people think they’re pay for content. They really should have called them Prestige or Advance classes.

>TMW Hannibal 800R ATV

That was a quest reward btw, presumably meaning they’re removing that mount as a quest reward from the original story quest you earn it from. That or you’re just going to get a second one ’cause why not?

GG Trion, you’re not even being subtle.

Downloaded it, plaid it for a few hours, uninstalled it. As someone who actually played and had some fun with the game during its initial release (back when Cross Media Synergy was its big draw)…

They didn’t change jack squat. I’ve seen claims that they rebuilt the game from the ground up, but it looks like a weak remastering of the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 version since everything appears rather… ugly. Same barebone basic customization low detail models. Same exact story/mission progression. Water still looks like a cheap plastic sheet over some blue stuff. The only noticeable change has been skills, but you can easily guess why above! At least before you could build your character towards other skills and abilities, now you’re locked into a ‘class’ that is given zero explanation in-game.

I might not of gotten far enough to unlock the ability to earn access to the 3 other basic professions… But I won’t bother doing that. It handles and plays exactly like an early 2000s shooter still, and the guns have about as much impact as a drunk fly.

I just wanted to drive around in my crazy car, shoot stuff and have it feel comfortable to do.

I even had to stop playing last weekend’s closed beta because I encountered the same game-breaking bugs that made me stop playing the original game’s early closed betas.

Hey Trion, I already bought your Founder Pack; it’s called “the original game”.

Must be a PC thing, never had issues on PS3.
