The Daily Grind: What has been the best MMO expansion or update of 2018 so far?

22

We are about to put four months of 2018 in the can, and during that time there has been quite a lot of movement in the MMO field with a few launches, reboots, and plenty of updates.

So far this year, Trove busted out its Heroes expansion, Skyforge added a new class with Overgrowth, TERA made the jump to consoles, and RIFT tried its hand at a progression server. That’s just scratching the surface, because it seems like every week we see several major updates come through.

Looking at the four-month start to this year, what would you say is the best MMO expansion or update so far? Yes, there is plenty coming, but what about content that’s already been released?

The only update I’ve played this year was GW2’s Living World Season 4, Episode 2 which has been a pretty good patch for me. Not only was the patch itself fun, but all the new asura themed items in the patch and in the thematically aligned gem store updates have revived my interest in my original main from launch: my asuran engineer. He has a new look, a new weapon set, a new backpiece, some new mini’s, and I’m loving the Holosmith elite spec which I finally got a chance to try.

But besides the asuran revival the patch added a really neat map and gave us an alternative view of the Charr through the Olmakhan tribe. Plus the addition of some new recurring characters was neat. Finally, the free 32 slot bag was a great reward as well that kept me busy doing all the achievements to get it.

Overall it’s been one of my favorite Living World episodes so far.

Looking ahead I’m excited for Summerset as I’ve decided to dive into ESO as my secondary MMO with that expansion.

And this is where I realize we are almost 5 months into the year, and I haven’t touched expansion content in an MMO… just nothing really that appealing to me right now I guess.

Update? Maybe RIFT Prime and server progression.

Expansion Wise so far: Trove and Skyforge, though I am looking forward to Summerset.
Update Wise: Warframe (I’m also looking forward to the new Sanctuary Onslaught update).

How about “nothing”?

Enjoying BDO’s constant updates on a weekly basis. So far this year alone we’ve had Mystic awakening, tent system, new outfit system, new sailboats, new Vell ocean boss, Absolute skills, Rabam skills, UI overhaul, fort siege placement changes, and fairy pet. This doesn’t even cover the myriad of events that are constantly going on even without holidays.

They’re just constantly churning out new stuff, reminds me of early GW2 when ANet had constant updates and always something going on except we also get the massive new content boosts like the upcoming Dreigan and such.

It’s easy to churn out regular updates when they already exist in a prior version and all that needs to be done is some localisation. Or is the weekly new stuff genuinely new and not simply a catch-up exercise with the Korean version?

NA BDO is only slightly behind the Korean. So yes it is basically weekly/biweekly content. It’s been this way for a long time now. Updates and events happen all the time. Probably the most updated game I’ve seen in a long time.
