MMO Week in Review: Just Daybreak things (April 29, 2018)

Were you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

Arg, this week you guys. Daybreak is currently wading in the aftermath of one of the biggest unforced errors I’ve seen in the MMO genre in a decade, from inexplicably deciding to answer Russian sanction rumors by abruptly claiming it’s not owned by the company it’s said it’s been owned by for three years to laying off over 70 people in what was allegedly an unrelated H1Z1 crisis.

It’s such a mess that you probably missed our farewell to EVE Online’s Andie Nordren and our impressions pieces on Project Gorgon, Sea of Thieves, and Elder Scrolls Online’s Summerset. Oh yeah, and Belgium declared lockboxes illegal and threatened a bunch of international corporations with criminal penalties. No big thing.

“Just Daybreak things” indeed.
Bit of a shame, because it overshadowed the Belgium lockbox story, which may have set a precedence with significant impact for game companies worldwide.
Probably far more important than the DBG shenanigans really.

Daybreak have now placed gaffe tape over the mouths of all employees, including the janitor, so I doubt there will be much more said on it this week unfortunately :(

Slow news week. Hopefully next week will pick up a little.

I’m just waiting for the Daybreak update where they deny ever having had anything to do with developing, publishing or maintaining Everquest (some guy called Bob did it all singlehandedly on his own time while working for SOE as a janitor). And then reports start coming in the managers of a Daybreak have taken hostages and holed up in a local convenience store, demanding 5000 Septims and safe passage to Tamriel.
