Champions Online releases brand-new content with the Save the Earth alert

Champions Online is really not going to stop reminding everyone that it’s become the “longest running superhero MMO of all time,” chiefly by simply refusing to close down as the playerbase and content dried up (and not ever having to either since Cryptic wisely bought the IP rather than licensed it). It’s earning its keep a bit today, however, as well as some deserved respect, by actually releasing some new content in the form of a new alert. It’s called Save the Earth.

“In this epic adventure, your Champion’s personal nemesis has commandeered a satellite high above the orbit of Earth! You’ll have to fly there and do battle with them to… wait for it… Save the Earth! Are you up to the challenge, Champions? Complete this new Alert to gain exciting rewards like the Threaten Emote, a Ray Gun, many different visors and more!”

Cheesy, yes, but what do you expect from a superhero MMORPG? Good on ya, Champs. Let us know if you’re going to be checking it out!

Champions: The ever-present reminder that City of Heroes was amazing, and nothing else quite matches it.

I might just be really bad at the game, but I’m sort of getting tired of this game being either a cakewalk or curbstomp with nothing in between. I tried this new alert with three separate groups yesterday, and the general consensus was frustration – and not the usual “rargh!expetiveexpletive” gamer stuff, just a kind of exasperated resignation and a decision to drop the mission and go play something else.

I don’t know. Again, maybe I’m playing wrong and need lrn2play, but having an entire room of wildly overpowered (seemingly) infinitely spawning baddies all aggro on the player group at the same time seems like a bad design decision. There’s so much incoming DPS that it easily overwhelms defenses and support. It’s like this was balanced exclusively for the players who can do 10k and up with every attack.

So sad they don’t give this game more love. It actually is fun to play.

New alert is… I like the concept, but it needs some work still.

So… The Commissar’s arch-nemesis, The Plutocrat, awaits her in orbit? Have no fear citizen comrades, she’s on her way!

(I… um… may have created a superhero designed to be the opposite of Superman…)

Yes, it’s time for 10 more minutes of new content to be repeated countless times to either grind for things to convert currency to currency the cash shop uses. The grind can either be in game or real life because both fake and/or real currency is required to be converted to the real fake currency needed by the cash shop.

I suppose it’s amazing that so little development is needed to keep this game going and that new players still exist to exploit before they realize they are stuck in an endless scam.

If Champions added regular content and allowed F2P characters to mix and match powers from different sets, I would come back and most likely spend some money on the game. I’m not going to spend money on a game that has not added any real content in years. And while this is a good start with the new alert, I’ll wait to see if they can keep that coming.

Same here. I have somewhere around fifteen max level characters in that game. It was the first MMO I ever got into, and I bought almost every cosmetic item that they sold at one point. And then the content stopped coming and I left. I went back once, very briefly, but the game just doesn’t have enough / any new stuff to keep me engaged.

As soon as I saw the headline, I thought, “I need to make sure Saxon knows of this.” Never mind, ya beat me to it.
