Lord of the Rings Online starts testing massive class changes

33
It’s finally here. For a while now, Standing Stone Games has promised that it would be giving most of Lord of the Rings Online’s classes a major balance pass. Today, the studio announced that it has started testing the first batch of these with Update 22.2.

And everyone is in a panic.

The class changes, which are extensive and address six of the current professions, have the community scrambling to figure out how current builds and rotations will change come 22.2. Many talent lines are being adjusted or outright revamped, and numerous skills have seen alternating buffs and nerfs depending on the developers’ vision for the class in question.

For those who wade past the class changes, there are a few festival improvements awaiting in the patch notes. The studio has created lowbie-friendly versions of the anniversary scavenger hunt (which was a major complaint last year), and there is a Summer Picnic activity that’s been created for the upcoming celebration.

Hellooooo all … just want to pass on some information form prior forum posts and live Q&As with SSG. This is just the FIRST round of changes to test. Much more classwork to come in future updates. SSG advised it’s going to roll out in bits as things are ready. The executive producer announced on a Q&A that this work is a priority for the system devs. (Beornings will be the most comprehensive of the class work still to come.)

Unless one of the changes is putting the Captain back to the way it used to be, then they can talk to the hand lol Yes I’m still salty :P

Guardian DPS buffs! This will bring me back to the game for sure. Don’t tell me Guardians are just tanks, damn it!

I’ll agree that buffing Guardian DPS is a nice thing. Not so sure on a lot of other changes, I’ll have to wait and see.

Gotta log in later to say farewell to my blue line hunter, lol

Actually I play blue line so carelessly and inefficiently that I hope not to be affected too much by changes. But if I am, I’ll just switch back to red, which I had been playing and enjoying for years anyway, before switching to blue when Mordor released.

You just know how it’s all going to end – FUBAR.

Edit – just read the release notes. Nothing for Beorning. Hmmm.

I know everybody loves to dunk on SSG for some reason, but please try to at least fucking read the post first.

Ok, now you’re just being hostile. You can ignore the history of valid reasons to “dunk” on this company all you want…but calm down a bit.

* Sirens sounding

FANBOI ALERT! FANBOI ALERT!

Seriously, given how Beorning has been in the most desperate need of attention since it was released, it’s not amiss for people to be surprised that it’s not included.

So please, take your salty failpost and run along.

Oh look, a copycat post. How unoriginal.

Now, do run along. If you hurry you might make it in time to tell Cordovan about the nasty bittervets before he clocks off for the day….

Hey Bango … I love my Beorning and can’t wait to see what is to come. SSG did confirm that the Beorning will be the most comprehensive of the changes but will take a bit more time to be ready.

That’s good news then. We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for it.

Yay! They are going to increase the number of players you can /ignore to 300! With so many obnoxious spammy gold-sellers, I regularly have to remove people from ignore and hope they are people who aren’t playing the game anymore.

On the one hand, I understand that people don’t like when things change.

On the other hand, I’ve been using the exact same skill rotations for the entire eight years I’ve played this game, despite the last set of EARTH SHATTERING class changes. Sooooooooooooooooooo…

(Of course, this set of EARTH SHATTERING class changes probably won’t change the skill rotations either.)

I agree, to an extent. However, the patch notes and feedback are troubling. Example, for warden…they focused on the yellow line (which, arguably, no one plays) and all but ignored the blue line (main tanking line) which needed the most work. If the devs themselves don’t grasp the meta…or play the classes…I don’t see this ending well.

Uh, if there’s a line nobody is playing, why shouldn’t they put most of their effort into it? It’s obviously the most broken one if it’s not even getting used.

Reader
Vincent Clark

In theory, sure. But let’s not kid ourselves, whatever changes they make to the yellow line isn’t going to increase the chance that people will play Warden as a ranged class (for reasons I thought were obvious). /shrug

But will they commit the time and resources to actually correcting/fixing the yellow line Warden? That’s the question.

They tend to get more wrong than right when they do “massive changes”, unfortunately. I’m still irked about the changes back during RoR.

I always approach class changes with feelings of dread because quite often developers end up royally screwing over classes I like. I’ve never forgiven Blizzard for the mess they’ve made of the paladin, shaman and warrior over the years. Even on the those rare occasions when they improve something, I find that I still prefer the old version, mainly because when you’ve played a class for years you tend to get used to it. Even classes with very obvious flaws you tend to like if you play them long enough.

Personally, I’d be a lot happier if they stopped making changes to classes all the time and just concentrated on bringing out more content.

I get you on Warrior, but honestly?

paladin, shaman

Paladin and Shaman only improved up to Wrath. I can’t speak for Cata and after. Vanilla Paladin gameplay was pathetic, and Vanilla Shaman gameplay is like punching a knife. It’s good, but you’re a subpar class because game design doesn’t help you.

You can’t speak for Cata and after? So your viewpoint is EIGHT years out of date?

Shaman sucks so much anymore. :/ Paladin I’m more neutral about the changes. Also not really happy with the this way, that way direction of warrior design as well. The only one that really irks me though is Shaman.

Oh hell. :/ I didn’t care for a lot of the last time they made “massive class changes”. :/
