Elder Scrolls Online is giving away a free minipet to Morrowind players

Pssst. Like free stuff? Me too. The Elder Scrolls Online is giving some free stuff away. It’s a free pet called the Dozen-Banded Vvardvark. “Vvardvarks might be the ill-advised result of Telvanni experiments, but they sure do make adorable pets,” ZeniMax quips. It is so ugly it is cute, and it’s a pun.

There’s a catch, of course; you have to own Morrowind to claim the freebie.

“To ensure you receive your free pet, you must log into the game while owning ESO: Morrowind at any point from now until Monday, May 21 at 2:59AM EDT (Sunday May 20 at 11:59PM PDT). If you logged in during the event period, you’ll receive this spiny-tonged little monster by May 29!”

As the studio reminds us, preordering Summerset, which launches in just a few weeks, will automagically unlock Morrowind, so if you were doing that anyway and really like aardvark minipets, now is the time. If you’re still on the fence, make sure you check out our Tamriel Infinium column, where our ESO columnist Larry Everett has been chronicling his hands-on time with the chapter on the PTS.

Oh, sweet! Even though I don’t use non-combat pets… But still!

I suppose I will take it…

I know free is free, but the pet thing is sort of done to death. SWTOR is way way worse though. They just keep recoloring the same 3 and giving the same ones away for 10 years.

I agree wholeheartedly. I love this game, best MMO currently on the market as far as I’m concerned, but these pets…

We did some vet run or a trial, I don’t remember, and this guy had a pony. A pony! A friggin’ pony standing amidst all the AoEs. It’s ludicrous and immersion-breaking.

They should implement a toggle the way LotRO does; allow us to not see non-combat pets. Yesterday please!

Neato, I’m down. Also, that reminds me that I don’t think I got my free lockboxes from the login even despite being a sub. I’ll have to check in on that.

They were on a long delay, I think they’re supposed to come wednesday. This pet is also delayed.

Yeah, I remember they were supposed to come by 5/16 but read about folks getting them sooner. Oh well, got a few more days before I need to potentially bung ESO support.

You had to log in every day during a certain time frame to get them, and they were given out last week to PC players. As long as you logged in during those 6 days, you’re good to claim them!

Well I logged in each day during the promotion (on PC) so I should have them. But haven’t spotted them yet. They may have arrived over the weekend without me noticing, though.

There are some details the above commenters failed to disclose, one is that you had to be a “paid” ESO+ subscriber (NOT the free weekend type) or you get nothing at all.

Secondly they are sending the boxes out to people at utter and total random each downtime. You should have received them by tommorow’s downtime. (If not bethesda screwed up.) But people have received them at different times, some got them the moment the event ended, others such as myself only got them a few days ago.

It was in fact every day you logged in you received one lockbox. I logged in four days and have received four boxes.

They also weren’t being ‘delivered’ immediately, coming out in stages by 16th May.

Something with a nose like that – meant for rooting, would never evolve on two legs – Fantasy or not. Every time it foraged for food it would fall down.

And now my immersion is shattered forever.

We used to game with a genius friend of mine in high school — the quantum physicist pal I’ve mentioned here before — and he used to routinely bring up things like this when we used to play tabletop “Dungeons & Dragons”.

We got in the habit of just chanting “It’s Maaaaaaaaagic!” at him in response. :-)

Arms, my pal, listen carefully: “It’s Maaaaaaaaaaagic!”

Pretend magic aardvark-thing can eat however it wants because, y’know … magic!

:-)

Cheers,

Wouldn’t the tail provide balance? Honest question. Let’s go down that route.

Isn’t the Kiwi bird two legged and with a long beak?

Just wanted to point out this quip Zenimax made about the pet in the text above:
“Vvardvarks might be the ill-advised result of Telvanni experiments…”
They didn’t evolve, but were artificially created. Kind of like how a lot of house pets (Persian cats, chihuahuas, English bull dogs, etc. with deformities) would never naturally evolve in the wild.
