Warframe is reworking Saryn to be more intuitive and heavily revamping melee

Change is afoot in Warframe, say a pair of dev workshop articles accompanying last week’s dev stream. The first details the rework of Saryn – not the first time the toxic ‘frame has seen revision. Digital Extremes says she’s confusing to play for newbies and not intuitive at all.

“Essentially, with Saryn you are given all the ingredients to mix up a cocktail, without really knowing if the ingredients are meant to mix in the first place,” DE writes. “In 2.0, we aim to take the guessing out of the ‘what does what with what to make X happen?’ and ultimately make her more sensible and intuitive to play.” The reboot involves buffing her armor and tweaking the mechanics behind spore damage, molt, toxic lash, amd miasma. She’s even getting new audio sounds: a voice that speaks when she casts.

The other dev diary covers the broader review of melee across the whole game. DE is tweaking channeled damage, blocking, dual-wielding, dodging, better effects, a stat and mastery balancing pass, improved base damage, and stances – it’s a lot.

Melee in Warframe is my favourite way to play. Oberon Prime + Silva & Aegis Prime (or Nidus + Hirudo) on high-level Survival missions is just about the most fun I’ve had in a game in a long time.

But I just don’t “get” channeling. I rarely use it, mostly because I don’t really understand how the mods work or why I would take up a precious mod spot with a channeling-only mod. I don’t think it’s well-explained (even in poorly-explained Warframe) and its connection to things like Parry is just…mystifying. Why can I block without channeling but not parry without channeling? Etc.

Saryn is already in a good spot – there’s several frames who needed a rework before her and it’s frustrating that they’re continuing ot be left behind. For example, the Zephyr rework was only half-arsed (momentum issues with her 1, the charge time to hover being suicide-levels of way-too-long to activate, the 2 being like Banshee’s 1 but worse, the tornado cursor movement with her 4 being literally useless etc).

Sigh.

Anyway, about the maiming strike nerf, it isn’t a maiming strike nerf. It’s going to reduce the end effectiveness of maiming strike builds but the action of the mod itself (crit on slide) was not mentioned anywhere in any of the melee rework notes. So we’ll see what happens with that. I hope that the range increaser mods that are getting nerfed can switch over to have a bit of punchthrough because as anyone who’s ever played a Fissure knows, mobs spawn inside ceilings, walls etc and if you can’t punch through, you can’t kill them.

I’m more worried about the combo nerf tbh. If it’s going to turn into a builder-consumer mechanic á la TSW (swat ineffectively with light attacks at a mob for a few seconds to build up enough combo counter for a heavy attack to actually kill them) then that sounds absolutely effing terrible in a fast paced horde slaughter game where mobs quickly scale to levels where they can one shot you if you stand still for a fraction of a second.

Also, I liked being able to channel on demand to make my attacks stronger when necessary. Came in handy when a Nox pops up. Guess we’ll see where this goes but I’m fairly apprehensive.

Ive got about 250 hours in Warframe, and Ive never understood “channeled melee”. Ive just never used it or known how to use it. There is nothing in the game (at least when i played through the early parts) that explain what it is, or how to use it. Ive got tons of mods that can be used for channeled attacks but again, never use them.

It seems to be one of those typical warframe things that is just part of the game, but you wouldnt really know it unless you were the type to really do a lot of research about it.

channeling increases your damage by 50% and your crit rate(also makes you look like a badass with the right setup and weapon set you can do ALOT of damage by channeling since it also increases status effect damage as well.

channeling can also affect the combo counter so your damage goes up over time if you are blasting combos

and channeling while blocking allows you to reflect 90% of projectiles and stop certain attacks(like the examus stomp, fire walls, laser beams, quakes, etc) from knocking you down or throwing you off whatever platform you are on

and isn’t channeling explained in the codex in the front of the ship?

Ive never been able to figure out how to actually attack while channeling. Its always just made that noise, and made my weapon glow, but no keys i hit ever made me actually do any sort of melee attack.

You have to keep the channeling key pressed while doing normal attack.. Like set channeling key to something that can be held (ctrl or shift).. If I recall correctly.
Yup I also had to youtube search it before I understood.. but besides unlocking some rivens and as lifeleech on my Limbo I never used it.

It is one of the great features about warframe that nothing is explained, so the game keeps opening up, the deeper you get. Backside is you have to spend a lot of time on youtube and wiki to understand anything.

same way you do a regular melee attack you press E
you hold down your mouse and press E

if no key you pressed did anything then your E key is broken and you apparently can’t use melee keybind it to another key

I have melee bound to another key. It works for normal melee attacks, but i wonder if thats why ive had issues with the channeled attacks.

that still shouldn’t do anything channeled attacks and normal attacks are all in the same vein

if you can do normal melee holding down your left mouse button shouldn’t stop you from being able to attack

I LOVE melee in Warframe, but I agree, I’ve had trouble understanding Channeling — mostly as it relates to things like parry and some of the channeling mods.

I’m actually looking forward to the changes. Toxic Lash applying to main and secondary weapons is going to be a welcome change. As to spores being infinite, we’ll have to see if that makes it into the actual game and how it shakes out if it does.
The main discussion on the forums and reddit seems to be about the switch of damage types between spores and miasma. Most high level groups run with a full team of corrosive projection, negating any armor, and making corrosive spores less useful. But I feel it’s going to be a big boost to low/mid level and random groups.

I bet whoever came up with the “blocking is channeling; channeling is blocking” line is kicking themselves over it right now, because that more than anything else has the Warframe community scratching their heads and asking, “What the fuck is going on with this rework?”

The Saryn changes look mostly good but I’ll need to test it out myself to be sure. From what they posted it seems to be a major buff with only a minor loss that we can’t put spores on molt anymore. I can live with that though if it means infinite scaling damage and duration.

The melee changes though…are frightening. Mainly because we don’t have the info yet on how it will work with mods like Bloodrush etc. I also don’t like changing the combo counter to spend all you have on a heavy attack. That seems like a combo system for a different game that isn’t a horde shooter. Removing channeling completely is fine though. No one used it outside of Life Strike procs. Though we don’t know what’s going to happen to Life Strike now either. This could turn out to be alright but I can also see this going very, very wrong. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go clutch my melee weapons in my arsenal and tell them that everything’s going to be alright.

The melee range changes have me worried too. I love my Lesion and Primed Reach is the first Primed mod I ever maxed.

I like the way Saryn works right now, but i understand this changes and why it had to be done. Now the Spores being the first skill with infinite duration is somethng i never expected to happen, i definitely want to try the new Saryn.

Regarding melee combat, in simple words “spin2win” and killing trough walls is gonna be nerfed, which is understandable and is reflected on maiming strike prices going down, now i’ve been reading about what is gonna change, the channeling system being removed and replaced with heavy attacks and being able to do animation cancel by rolling are great steps, the only thing that worries me a bit is how this is going to work in the game as Warframe is a fast-paced game and that’s why slide attacks are so meta right now.

The Maiming Strike price thing is really weird, because it’s still going to be a good mod even if you can’t attack through walls with it. Like, +90% crit on an attack that does extra base damage and hits multiple targets is never going to be bad.
