Elite Dangerous has big plans for a Memorial Day weekend bonus event

Frontier isn’t exactly known for running bonus weekends, but it’s doing just that in Elite Dangerous as it joins the throng of online games vying for your eyeballs during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

“We’re pleased to announce that, starting from May 24 to May 30, we will be introducing an extended ‘Bonus Weekend’, which will bring temporary but lucrative bonuses to the galaxy!” the studio says.

“The bonuses we will activate for this period are as follows: All profits from trading activities will be increased (the amount of profit will vary depending on what you are shipping and where you’re shipping it to. Rare commodities are excluded from this bonus.) The materials requested for engineering recipes will be at one rank below the existing ones (cheapening the current cost of engineering your modules.) Whether you’re a penniless pauper or a wealthy space-tycoon, it’ll pay to haul this weekend, so dust off your freighters and get out there! Oh, and if you need a little extra jump-range, the engineers have you covered!”

The Elite playerbase is actually not entirely happy about the event, with some on the forums criticizing the lack of immersive lore behind it, its “artificial” and “gimmicky” nature, grind, and their preference for fresh gameplay instead. Other people think it just won’t work. It’s a weird day when Reddit appears to be the bastion of positivity. It’s just a bonus weekend, guys. Welcome to MMOs.

“We just think it’s a fun event for the community and it could bring back a few old players who may not have tried out the new features since the latest updates,” Community Manager Will Flanagan explains.

Guess they are still trying to convince players to grind out Engineers. Maybe the developers should try it out for themselves to see what a non-fun system they have created. Micro resources for example which are a RNG cesspool .

Everytime I read news about this game its about either grind or pvp.

I can see why they’re upset about this. Engineering is a painful grind, earning the big ships is a painful grind. All you have at the end is the sense of accomplishment that comes from slogging all the way through that (or at least that’s all I have, as I found the smaller ships more fun and went back to my Federal Assault Ship, leaving my Cutter collecting rust in the garage).

Top that off with all the players in solo/private group that probably don’t view it as an MMO and then suddenly the fabric of the universe is torn asunder with ‘Tada! Gamey skinner box mechanic incoming! All your sense of accomplishment will be destroyed!’

Or maybe I’m just old and grumpy. You can decide.

Elite forums once again proving that they’re one of the worst out there. I even saw a few threatening to uninstall over this because apparently bonus weekends are “cheap asian MMO clicky crap.” I had a hearty laugh at that.

Meanwhile, I’ll be fast tracking it back to Colonia to get in on this. My main traders are back in the bubble, but I have a spare Type 6 that I’ve named “Jaques In Box” that I left stored at Jaques Station. Because that’s just how things work out there. Anyway, I’m quite looking forward to this.

I’ve no idea about the forums, haven’t been there. But if you buy a product then you are entitled to complain and discuss all you want, I think.

I suppose if they want to be completely insane and complain when the devs literally hand them free stuff they can. On the flip side, I feel like I’m entitled to call them out as completely insane because complaining about a fun event where you can get some free stuff is completely insane.
