Champions Online is discontinuing its subscription too

Back in May, PWE surprised Star Trek Online players by effectively discontinuing the game’s optional monthly subscriptions, replacing them with a starter pack that allowed everyone to permanently unlock most of the stuff they were getting with that sub. Now it appears it’s doing the same thing for Champions Online, which was also a hybrid free-to-play title.

“We’re making a change to how subscriptions work in Champions Online,” the studio posted today. “The Lifetime Subscription will still be available and unchanged, but we’re shifting away from monthly subscriptions. As of June 7th, those subscriptions will no longer be available on our website. Instead, we’re replacing them with a brand new purchasable pack, Premium Pack.”

The pack includes six character slots, 40 auction slots, the 200K G limit, a level 40 retcon, a pair of costume tokens, plus a ton of costume sets and travel powers, all for 1500 ZEN. Anyone who’s previously subbed can grab the pack for free from the cash shop, with a “a separate purchase available to former Gold or Lifetime members that will add any items you don’t currently own to your account.” Like STO, Champs will allow anyone with an existing sub to continue it (and continue racking up bonus currency every month).

As our tipster noted, the game’s community remains rather small – but loyal – so overall the game’s monetization likely won’t change much, and you’ll still be playing through the nose for freeform character slots. It appears as if lifetimer subbers won’t be losing anything beyond the dose of unique monthly items (the “monthly subscriber rewards”). The freebie character slot at level 40 for subbers and lifetime subbers is also going away.

FYI: From Cryptic CM AmbassadorKael

Greetings, Champions. After listening to your feedback these past few days, we’re taking a harder look at this feature and how to better implement it. We’ll have more news in the future, but for now this will not be launching on June 7th.

ok a few points.
if you are subbed, you can continue to sub. No change.
if your sub drops for any reason- you get the standard 2 slots unlocked.
No you can’t pay $50 to get your character made a FF. That’s a silver FF slot, it’s a separate slot.
They have said they are going to made a conversion item, sometime in the future.(anyone who has played for a while knows what that means)
The 59 character limit on accounts is now WORKING, so you will no longer be able to make more than that unless you already have the slots. My main acct has 140+. Head of the altaholics list has nearly 400.
They have instead a ‘premium pack’ which has slots costumes, a single retcon and some other stuff which you can buy if you have NEVER subbed.
There is supposed to be an ingame token for those who have subbed.

One weeks notice and a LTS sale during that week,. Talk about pressure selling. Too bad a lot fo players are adults with bills to pay.
here’s the main discussion thread.

Freeform is about the only way to play this game, and of course they locked it behind a huge paywall. I loved Champions when it first came out, the freedom to make cool unique characters. Then they went F2P and locked away freeform and also seemed to forget to make any new content. The game nearly died, but seems to be on the barest of life support. I would pay money and support the game, but they have no clue how to get people back in, freeform character slots that can be purchased cheaply or even one given free, and new consistent content.

I am shocked that this did not include a free freeform character for every account. Freeform is the best part about this game, and if they would just give it away, it would bring people into the game. I completely don’t understand how they can not see that.

On the one hand, that’s $10 a month I’ll be getting back.

On the other, um, is it right that I’m going to be locked out of my freeforms until I pony up? That’s a dealbreaker right there, especially now that I’m losing my monthly zen stipend as well.

Monthly subscriptions are being grandfathered in and will exist as they do now along the same line as lifetime subscriptions. However, you can’t ever take a break because you will not be able to start up a monthly subscription again. Freeforms and stipends continue if you are subscribed one way or the other. No more monthly subscriber items though.

I like this unfinished, misshapen game an awful lot because it reminds me sketching super heroes and writing stories when I was a kid. In the long run, I think DCUO is a better linear, more complete, F2P themepark MMORPG, but Champions Online is a more creative player experience. If you can get Freeform heroes in CO, you can sculpt a hero that’s uniquely yours. You can combine stealth and flight with guns and magic if you want to and approach combat completely differently than you would if you combined high-health tankiness with underground tunneling, martial arts, and elementally based crowd-control powers. It’s wide open.

I think for brand new players, these changes make for a better experience, but existing players will have to make some annoying choices. Once you go Freeform, it sucks to downgrade to Archetypes. You don’t play CO to create cookie-cutter heroes with cookie-cutter min-max’d builds. The character creation tools and Freeform ability building are the two best aspects of CO. I hear tell Cryptic working on figuring out what to do with existing Gold Freeforms in the new system. They probably should have figured that out first.

See previous post I’ve made over the years crying about how stupid Freeform pricing is. I bought the lifetime sub last year just so that I’d never have to think about it again.

Notably, lifetime subscriptions are on sale for the next 2 weeks.

champions is the superior superhero mmorpg. it is better than dcuo, both in that you have ultimate freedom in creating your hero and the fact that the combat is not a ridiculous combo fest, the ui is actually useable and gives you information and the community is not filled with mouth breathers filling every zone chat with pvp whines and pvp brags.

dcuo has market penetration and representation and an IP that the troglodytes actually know. champions online uses a horrible engine that can be extremely unresponsive (it’s the same engine that sto uses for it’s ground combat) and is going to a payment model that is going to so grossly punish their long term customers that it may finally kill the game outright.

both are garbage, neither hold a candle to city of heroes.

This is terrible for me. I was a subscriber and I enjoyed my 4 freeform characters but with this change they are essentially being destroyed by being turned into archtypes. I would have to buy freeform slots and then level up to 40 again…no easy task since this game quickly dissolves into grinding alerts.

This is possibly the worst change an MMO i like can have.

If they want to get more people interested in this game, simply offer freeform character slots along with the purchase of the pack, and lower the cost of additional freeform slots to a more reasonable $5 to $10.

This game has so much potential, but only when your character is freeform with free anytime respecs. Games like this live and die on their flexible customization options.

yeah i agree
Freeform slots are 50 dollars each in the zen store.

free anytime respecs

This might get me into the game. It’s very rare for me to bother playing any game that sells respecs.

I’d say that Freeform slots should about $15 to replace subscriptions. It’s a compromise, but good in the long-term. I think there should be an option to upgrade existing heroes from archetype to freeform as well.

As far as free anytime respecs, I don’t want Cryptic not to make money or players not be challenged to choose wisely. People need to make use of the Battle Station inside the Powerhouse and tools like Hero Creator.
