Diablo builds a new game while Hearthstone preps free packs and events

A job listing for a Blizzard dungeon artist has the gaming community buzzing today, as this particular listing is for a “new and unannounced” Diablo title. This confirmation of a Diablo project undoubtedly comes as a relief to fans who might have feared that Blizzard had abandoned the franchise entirely.

“The minions of Hell are growing stronger,” the studio posted. “We’re working on a new, unannounced Diablo project. Are you a skilled dungeon artist? Come work with us, and together we will build something exceptional.”

Meanwhile, Diablo III is ramping up for Season 14, which will be the first season to revolve around a theme. In this case, it’ll be the theme of “greed,” so expect a lot more treasure goblins hopping around.

Scooting over to another Blizzard property, Hearthstone has a fun June planned for its fan base. A Taverns of Time event is bringing alternate realities to the game from June 11th through July 2nd. And if you log in on June 13th, you’ll be treated to a free Golden Classic pack of cards.

Apparently, Niche Gamer has a source that has confirmed a Diablo mobile game is in development at Blizzard. Although they are quick to caution that they don’t know whether or not the mobile game is the “new, unannounced Diablo project” in question, I’m going to go ahead and resign myself to that being the case.

What a disappointment.

If this turns out to be a Mobile Game . . . it’s best to just leave those kinds of angry thoughts in the space between my ears.

Aren’t there rumors about a Diablo MMO every year? Obviously I’d love this, obviously it would get me to set aside whatever other game I’m playing… but it seems pretty damned unlikely at this point.

What is the chances for a possible Diablo MMO to not be with isometric camera like path of exile or lost ark? I love the dark settings of diablo, but I cannot play games with isometric camera :( I just can’t…

So on one hand I am excited by the possibility of a diablo themed MMO but on the other I am worried that it will be “lost Ark” style….

I’m not a huge fan of the top down camera myself. However, if and when they did make a Diablo MMO, I would count on it being the same style. The series is famous for it.

Finally they are starting to dabble, if ever so very very slightly, into PoE’s league mechanics in Diablo 3! Too bad it took them 14 seasons to catch on.

A Diablo MMO? I’ve long thought Blizzard would never undertake another MMO after the Project Titan derailment. But. There’s a couple of things that have changed:

1. WoW is clearly showing it’s age. BfA is really just Legion with different names and slightly different mechanics. There’s nothing of note or really very interesting in the expansion. The story has run its course. Everyone agrees that the return of the Alliance/Horde trope is a pretty empty hat.

2. With the exception of Amazon’s New World, there are no upcoming AAA western MMOs. There are none in the pipeline. Asian MMOs, with the possible exception of BDO, have had a pretty lackluster reception in the west. That means the market is way, way open.

3. Project Titan was a completely new IP Blizzard was building from the ground up. It failed to be fun. Diablo is a proven IP with, despite D3’s failing, a huge fan base. The assets, the lore, the game world, the complete IP already exist. Recreating it in a MMO, with players fighting the forces of evil (not unlike LOTRO) has a lot of appeal. With the competing interests of the various class origins, multi-faction PvP would be possible.

4. No way Blizzard is going to make a battle royale Diablo. It would be a waste of the IP to spend the remaining fan interest on a niche genre that has already peaked.

5. Dungeon artist. That’s what they are looking for. Not a battleground artist. That would strongly suggest . . . dungeons. Dungeons are a primary component of . . . games where you first have an open world from which you traverse into a dungeon. Or, games that are entirely a dungeon, like a rogue game. But Blizzard is married to multiplayer and esports. So, not a single player rogue-type game.

6. Not an RPG, either. Blizzard learned its lesson with D3. They have no talent, knack or frankly interest in RPGs. They have let D3 languish because it doesn’t really get their blood going and they don’t know what to do with it. But they love the Diablo IP.

So, I’m going to go with Diablo MMO. Blizzard needs to prove to itself it still has the chops. WoW is slowly fading. There are no significant competitors. The Diablo IP is underused and under-represented. It learned a lot from Titan.

I don’t know, the Island Expeditions are unique and Warfronts might be finally OPvP done right.

Rhyker has been covering the new Diablo game for a year.

Edit, he’s been covering this since 2015, this is extremely old news; while we’re at it Bernie Sanders is giving Hillary Clinton a run for her money in the Primary.

Bet you they use the same engine as Heroes of the Storm for the unannounced Diablo project. Just wonder if it’ll be a F2P title or a B2P. If it is B2P one can only hope they skip out on all the BS monetization tactics. And, no, saying they need to pay for servers (that they don’t need) is not an excuse.

New Diablo game coming soon

(translation: So about a week before Star Citizens scheduled launch which sadly is a week after our sun has boiled the atmosphere / oceans and turned our planet into a cinder in the the process of becoming a red giant in about a billion years time) :p

I really wanted to laugh at this, but it’s probably true. We will see it in 9 years after they have scrapped two or three previous versions.

I have more faith on Blizzard, if they said there will be game then they mean it, Project Titan as i remember was not announced, we only knew about it after it was canceled.

I expect Blizzcon will have something about this game, not far now, just few months.

IIRC, a Blizzard dev said they had scrapped seven games. Arguably, one would want a studio to scrap more games than they launch. Take lots of chances on what you investigate but make sure anything you release is top notch.

We did know about Titan before it was scrapped, we just didn’t know much. Lord of the Clans and Starcraft: Ghost are a couple of other high-profile cancelled Blizz games, and those were being heavily promoted.

An early release for SC? Great news!

Reader
Stropp

That’s okay. Humanity will have been absorbed into The Culture and have Sublimed long before then, so we should be able to play SC on whatever computers exist in the n-dimensional universe we end up in at at least 30 FPS.

Reader
Bryan Correll

With our luck we’re more likely to run into the Affront.

Reader
Stropp

No problem: According to some internet pundits humanity is so despicable the Affront will bow down before us saying “We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy”

Reader

See the positive side… we will have new MMOs to play while on the way to star sirius!
