Guild Wars 2 runs a deadly bonus World vs. World week

The weeklong bonus for World vs. World content in Guild Wars 2 starts on June 8th, and it’s all about high risk and high reward. Until June 15th, players will earn 25% more track progress, enjoy an extra 50% magic find, and gain double the WXP.

The catch? The downed state is gone.

Yes, you read that right. No downed state. Your health hits 0 and you drop for good. That should wildly change a number of builds and force everyone to develop new strategies for a week, shouldn’t it?

If you’re willing to venture on a battlefield that’s far more lethal than normal, you’ll also have a shot to play along with the developers on June 8th. So it’s going to be risky, but if you do well, you could make some substantial gains along the way. Does the risk outweigh the reward? Hey, that’s what “high risk” is all about. And if you’re not very good at fighting back in downed state anyhow, not much will change.

I bought several finishers and then quit playing WvW. They are very rarely useable in PvE as it is. I just wanna use my Unicorn Finisher more often, damnit! https://youtu.be/hphY7mwrCeQ

That’s a good point. Even better one since they just put a boatload of them on sale a couple weeks ago. Stomping isn’t going away permanently of course, but still.

They just buffed the wvw rewards though, so nice to run an event to coincide with that.

To me downed state is one of the good features of GW2, whose value is missed by a lot of players. I think a lot of people will make the experience through that week how stale WvW becomes when there is no downed state. Downed state adds options for players.

But this game has been made worse over the years by listening to all those who cannot cope with something that is unusual compared to the rest. That’s why we now have raids with all their bad side effects. I wonder when they will introduce kill and node stealing.

Uh…what options? Downed state was always bad in WvW because you can just cleave through it. Or, if the opposite zerg is strong, they won’t ever lose people because they can just power through and ress the downeds. The Downed state actually makes fights stalemates or they make the winning zerg never lose momentum.

It’s a terrible idea IN WVW.

but this game has been made worse over the years by listening to all those who cannot cope with something that is unusual compared to the rest.

I’ll bite. What made this game worse? Because while i absolute loathe GW2 because of several design choices that differ from GW1, the game IMPROVED with time. PvP was a disgrace at launch, WvW was completely devoid of life, class balance was a complete joke, the talent system MAY seem better but it was a dumpster fire, and while i DON’T like the new system, the old one wasn’t good by any stretch of the imagination.

That’s why we now have raids with all their bad side effects.

Have you run dungeons and fractals at launch and one year in? The game ALWAYS had the raiding crowd without raiding. All that was left was the raids themselves. People were kicking necros before. They’ll keep doing that. People did play 4wars 1 mes. They would keep doing that for years. Elitism was ALWAYS in the game.

I wonder when they will introduce kill and node stealing.

Terrible exageration. It’s still a extremely casual game.

Look, i love giving Anet flak for failing GW2. And they did. They failed a lot with the game. It’s a extremely skinny version of their old, more deep and yeah, complicated, game.

But at least let’s be honest. Don’t just find issues with it, point the real ones.

Here is what helps you understand my position.

To me GW1 was an awful game and I was very happy with everything they did not copy over. I loved GW2 for being what it was. Just fyi, now, 5+ years into the game, I still did not do all story modes for all dungeons. I hate instanced group content with a passion – that is the result of 15+ years human toxicity in all MMORPs I tried before. Hiding skins (the stats are the same as ascended, so who cares) behind an instanced nightmare that drags in even more of this BS was a terrible choice in my view.

For the groups I ran with (and we had a guild group for WvW for a long time) downed state was always a tactical choice. Focus on downed? Concentrate efforts on a downed target to finish quickly or try to break the pain train instead? Rezz up own players or follow the enemy?

We neither roamed nor did we zerg. So in that in-between scale there was always room for those decisions, regardless of the meta in place.

I will not convince you and you will not convince me, that’s how people are – confirmation bias. I just wanted to state that there are different opinions and not just everybody thinks that downstate does not belong into WvW.

I have always felt that the downed state ruined the flow of pvp, especially in WvW.

Nothing worse than thinking “Yes! After a long, challenging fight, I finally won!” only to realize that your enemy isnt dead, and gets revived instantly by someone else on their team killing something, or using and ability that instantly brings them back from the downed state. (or worse, they teleport away from you and get up on their own)

That being said, I do feel that there are a couple classes that are gonna feel even squishier now, as they have come to rely on not actually being 100% dead when they get dropped. Thieves and Ele’s come to mind. We have a thief in our group who sorta relies on the suicide bomber strategy, where he can “Shadowstep” back to us after he ganks, and gets ganked, for us to revive him from a downed state.

Ultimately, its just the tip of the ice berg that is WvW issues that gw2 has suffered from since day 1. Its what happens when you try to force an idea into a system that hasnt been designed specifically for that idea, and then go years without changing it.

The downed state itself wasn’t THAT bad. The issue was always the metagame not allowing you to confirm kills except with Cleave comps which was boring as hell ( AoE Pirate Ship anyone? ) and then, the people who died could actually be Hardressed. THAT was huge and a big letdown.

Then, Anet made that you couldn’t ress people in combat, and that was kinda fixed. I do like the downstate. I just think it’s too hardpressed on abilities and not like Defiance does ( ask for help and walk slowly ).

See for me, downed state was more of a pve mechanic. Something that gave solo players a 2nd chance, or group players the ability to come back from mistakes, since there werent official tanks and healers.

They just sorta kept it in pvp… even though it didnt really fit.

I agree to the WvW extent. It impedes the winning zerg of suffering huge losses.

I think in controled PvP it had a place, but it’s a half assed mechanic, not well thought out…as most of the things plaguing GW2.

Removing the downed state is not going to change anyone’s builds because who builds for the downed state? If anything, we build to avoid the downed state, or at least play to avoid it. All removing it does is takes away a nuisance that most committed WvW’ers like myself have wanted to go away for years. Too bad it’s only temporary.

Eles build for downed state lol

Maybe they are trying to see how it will play out and the WvW community’s reaction in order to add it more permanently or periodically in the future…

This will make sieges a lot harder to maintain. So this favors defenders quite heavily. Could be interesting.

Wow, this is a really cool concept, that way people wont drop what theyre doing to hit the stomp/ recover anyone thats downed, thatll be a nice change

I know they get a lot of hate during the events, but I find all these events they’ve done pretty fun. Like they had the low cost Golem week as well. Fun to change things up a bit.

I thought they get hate for many stupid business decisions and questionable customer service stuff over having events like this?

You gotta understand two things about WvW players.

We want constant attention, game updates, and more focus on our game mode.

We want absolutely nothing to change.

We want absolutely nothing to change.

This actually pisses me off. WvW is a mess, always was, and while the core game remains a mess, WvW will just be a bigger, unbalanceable mess. And it seems people actually like that.

I mean, they can Karmatrain. Who can blame them.
