It works!
If you think that patching a game always means crunch time, misery, and developers sobbing beneath their desks, Path of Exile’s Incursion league launch shows it doesn’t have to be. The recap on the launch weekend makes it clear that there was no crunch time leading up to the launch, no major problems, and a smooth rollout all around. Most of the smaller issues were even sorted with hotfixes, which worked to the team’s advantage. And the changes have rocked the meta about, which also means that it’s more entertaining to see what players are trying.

Of course, some bigger issues couldn’t be fixed with hotfixes, which is why a larger patch is planned for next week to address three major crash issues. It also includes new 3D art for Apep’s Supremacy and Shadowstitch, which will hopefully give them a little more visual pop. The patch isn’t due until next week, but you can see the planned changes right now.

We checked out the Incursion update last night; you can catch our play through on Twitch!

These things are fun, short, and very intense. I’m new to PoE, but these are possibly my favorite part of the game so far. And you get phat lootz like crazy for doing good!

Crunch-free should be the norm! But kudos to the managers here for putting the team’s wellbeing first, and honestly for speaking up about it because sometimes people don’t realize many of their favorite games are made on a life-destroying crunch timeline. I personally can wait a few more months or weeks if it means getting a better product, and more importantly, the people behind it get their much-deserved free time.

Kudos are definitely in order.

However, remember that Grinding Gear Games are a New Zealand based company and have to follow NZ labor laws. I’m not sure how they differ from Oz labor laws, but I expect that the American standard permanent crunch might be a tad on the illegal side there.

In Australia you can’t lay off employees at the drop of a hat, and certainly not because they went home on time on a regular basis. I imagine it’s the same in NZ. Makes it a bit harder to enforce crunch.

How quickly we forget. The glitch that put everyone in a queue and then dropped them the moment they finally got to the head of the line, sending them to the end of the queue. That was the opening hour and half of Incursion. I went from 7,500 to 37,000 to 89,000. Then the servers got shut down and restarted. All better!

Incursion is definitely one of the best leagues I’ve played. You need to know what you’re doing to succesfully run incursions, but as an experienced player, that’s fine to me. I’ve already got my “fully clear an incursion” challenge and made a few nice temples.

My only criticism is that clearing the whole temple is quite boring. Mobs have much higher HP than in maps, and on top of that, the temple is the largest zone in the game. This means it takes an eternity to clear, for a relatively small amount of XP. (An eternity for anyone who’s not arc trapper, anyway.)

After playing this league a lot, I am not a huge fan of this league’s mechanics in practice.

The big issue is the temple is way too much RNG. It’s RNG which room you get for the Incursions and it’s RNG which upgrades you get. It’s even RNG where the mobs are packed in the Incursion so you can easily go in and get dicked over by bad mob placement which you run out of time on and then the opposite where you’re permanently capped at 30s cause the density is absurd. I recognize that the RNG is line with the rest of the POE game but makes it very frustrating.

I think if we could pick the rooms we wanted and actually shape the temple the way we wanted it would be more interesting. I’ve had multiple temples with zero T3 rooms cause game just decided to keep going after T0/T1 rooms. Also been sitting on 5 undiscovered T3 rooms cause the game just refuses to roll on them.

I have had multiple instances of getting a full clear on a room and not getting a key to unlock other rooms. This can completely screw your progress to the point that you feel its not worth continuing and wish you could just hit the reset button to start over.

On the whole it is a fun league but yeah the rng layered on rng layered on rng does get a little tiring at times.

It really blows to have a stone of passage drop just before the timer hits zero.

Had this happened twice to me. Really sucks. Then you can’t get to the best rooms and what’s the point? Drops aren’t good enough to warrant the time spent if you don’t open certain doors.

The drops of the incursions themselves are still worth it though, it’s a big loot pile for a short time spent. And if the temple is bad, you can just make a new one.

Yea not even an issue of clearing things, got that under control, but doesn’t do much good if you don’t get the stone to drop.

I like the RNG, being able to choose would be boring. People would figure out which rooms are best and everyone would then make the same all the time. Also, because incursions are so frequent, it’s no big problem if a few go badly. I ended up with a terrible temple once, but I simply entered it, portaled out right away, and built a new one.

The nature of RNG means that “a few go badly” isn’t something you can reliably say. In my case, for example, majority have gone badly and a few have been good.

The RNG of this season/game is so high it actually makes me want to enhance in BDO. That’s how crazy it is.

Incursions aren’t entirely RNG though. That’s why I said a few, because if many go badly, it’s probably you that’s doing something wrong.

Such a great update. The Temples/ Incursions are such an awesome addition to the game. Hopefully, when they are inevitably added permanently, they are implemented in a major way. I would like to see them as a sort of alternative to end game mapping with different layouts, ect. I like the map system, but it does tend to get stale a few weeks into the league
