E3 2018: Cyberpunk 2077 debuts its trailer, but multiplayer is nowhere to be found

Let’s start with the good news because you’re going to need it: CD Projekt Red did indeed bring Cyberpunk 2077 to E3 2018, and its trailer is a glorious introduction to a Blade Runner-esque dystopian future full of cyborgs, fantastic technology, and shocking violence.

The bad news? The “online elements” that we had heard about and the multiplayer that we had hoped for were nowhere present, at least from what the studio discussed in a semi-hidden wall of text that was embedded into the trailer. In fact, Cyberpunk 2077 is being billed as a “true single player, story-driven RPG” without any microtransactions or DRM.

We might hear more from the actual show floor, but in the meanwhile, check out the trailer after the break!

Why exactly is that bad news? The fact that they won’t add a half-baked multiplayer mode and will focus entirely on world building, story and characters is a great thing.

So excited for this game, take my money now!

The trailer looked rather generic, but given what CDPR did with Witcher 3, they have my full confidence. I love that we’re getting to make our own characters in the Cyb2077 world.

On one hand, yeah this is somewhat disappointing… on the other it definitely wasn’t going to be an MMO and I’m not sure just how badly we needed one more sloppy add-on of a multiplayer option. CDProjectRed does some amazing stuff and I’m super-excited about the game… maybe their committing to the game being single player means we can expect to see the same level of quality we found in the Witcher 3.

I’m not going to be all that disappointed if there’s no multiplayer, although I do think that at least a coop mode would be nice. In any case, if the game has at least the breadth and depth of Witcher 3, but with that science fiction setting, I’m all in.

The game is singleplayer only, it’s in the message at the start of the trailer.
From what I was reading around, they have said that there is plenty of work left to do so 2020 release is absolutely possible.
I find it incredibly interesting that they show off that map at the start of the trailer, almost as to take a stab at Deus Ex. Here is the map for Deus Ex.

Cyberpunk map is like 4 secs into the trailer. And I can’t shake the feeling that they are making a point showing it off.

I’m just worried that by 2020 that game setting will look utopian.

Haha, you know I imagined it very differently, especially taking into account the first teaser trailer they released.

I sort of imagined the bottom level of the city in Altered Carbon, but honestly, I am not disappointed it looks very cool. Better even. They did a good job in my opinion.

Haha that’s dark but yeah… feasible. Both Cyberpunk and Shadowrun are looking disturbingly optimistic these days.

What? The economy is stronger than it has been in years. Your comments makes no sense.

That’s what Louis XVI said, and look what happened to him. Economies are cyclical, and we are far into a growth cycle. Not trying to preach, just voicing an opinion.

I’m more hyped for this then the Fallout survival game.

Last I spoke with a friend in the studio, they were still working on it. They weren’t very forthcoming though, I don’t want to spread misinformation so I’m not going to make assumptions on how far in development the multiplayer facet is at right now and to what capacity in the game.

Personal opinion though, coop campaign would be nice, something I suggested to them to pass along the chain.

This is the first game in a long time that I have awaited so anxiously. It may have been since 2004, when WoW had me counting the hours until a game release. As with some others here, it’s the single player experience that I crave, but I can understand why MassivelyOP might regret that it won’t be a true MMO.
