Battle royale is all the rage these days, but as we’ve been covering over the last few months, the SpatialOS-based Mavericks is aiming to bring a new approach to the wildly popular new genre: by making it truly massive, which by studio Automaton’s count means 1000 players in the same persistent world.
We got hands-on with the game at GDC, however, and had a hard time seeing how 1000 people made a significant difference in the gameplay in practice. “It’s much more for the battle royale crowd than the MMO crowd,” MOP’s Andrew wrote at the time. Hopefully, the E3 demo will change our minds.
Closed beta is expected to launch in August; you can already sign up on the official site. The company will also launch its founder system later this week. The splash page for that says lootboxes aren’t on the table, but there will be what looks like an optional subscription in the form of “citizenship” that unlocks “a variety of content within the game.” Check out the new E3 trailer below.

If they can pull off 1000 players, then theyll be showing EA what Battlefield should have been. We dont need FFA, just make it 2 armies.
So it’s… just a bigger battle royale thing? YAWN. Gimmick is gimmick.
You have 100 people? Hurmph. WE HAVE 1000 PEOPLE.
One more Battle Royale I am going to go all “Sean Spicer Dippin’ Dots” rant mode.
I’m really skeptical that they have 1000 people slugging it out in this game. They make it sound like SpatialOS is magic. And adding destructible environment and deformable terrain sounds nuts.
Only other large scale shooter is Planetside which runs like dogshit.
planetside actually runs pretty good can even run it with an intel chip(not at a great fps but decent)
I’m really surprised devs and publishers are still attempting to jump onto rickety old flavor of the month bandwagons like Battle Royale or Survival Sandboxes to be honest.
BR has been popular like 9 months. Lot’s of money out there still.
Whether there is money to be made or not doesn’t make a difference. People are tired of it. But I know what you mean by it being popular before, though this is where the frenzy hits before it all falls off the cliff, there is never a plateau.
This niche website in no way reflects “people”. It reflects a tiny percentage of enthusiasts who enjoy a genre well out of favor. If you are running a business – don’t saddle up that horse – unless you are in it for the spirit.
I really can’t figure out why some people are so salty over BR. Are you just salty over anything that is popular? Before I tried it our for the first time two weeks ago I didn’t let it bother me that other people did. I’ve gotten salty over things like Zombies…things like Clash of Clans city builder crap…the me too CCG fad…because they lasted YEARS. This one has literally just begun. In five years I’ll be salty with the rest of you but for now just let it go.
Just don’t play it – as far as anyone can tell it really isn’t slowing down other genres – it is just taking up a lot of press.
Spoken like a loyal patron.
I don’t remember saying it was slowing down other genres, I’m just sick of hearing about it. You enjoy talking about the business side in your posts, which explains your defense of it.
