Gran Skrea brings an indie sandbox MMO to early access

On the prowl for an undiscovered indie MMORPG these days? You might want to check out Gran Skrea Online, as it just went into early access this past weekend.

According to the team, Gran Skrea “combines a desire for new player-defined MMORPG mechanics with influences from classic RPGs like RuneScape, Ultima Online, and The Elder Scrolls.” It’s $9 right now through June 23rd, which isn’t the most exorbitant price we’ve ever seen, and there’s an official Discord set up already.

The sandbox MMORPG sends players “to create their own destiny in an original world of medieval fantasy.” This apparently means a mixture of quests, “ruthless” PvP combat, guilds, and economy. There are already quite a few features in place, including player housing, a criminal flagging system, lots of crafting, and a game world with plenty of lore. There’s more to be added in the early access program, so features such as territorial warfare, auction houses, and naval warfare are still in development.

Get an early look at Gran Skrea after the jump!

So stupid
Why are these lame pvp mmo’s the game we have been waiting for? Its just another gankbox that will fade away like the rest of them. Devs that make games like this are looking for a quick cash grab. Its so easy to make a pvp mmo because you don’t need real content. These type of mmo’s are one of the reasons why the genre is fading away. The masses are not interested in these types of mmo’s yet they keep pumping them out it seems weekly. All because its easy to make crap games like it and hopefully they can get a quick cash grab.

I was like, “ohhh, new sandbox.” then saw “ruthless PvP” and was like “ohhh…new gankbox.” Pass.

“ruthless” PvP combat, Lost me there because although I like pvp in mmo’s it has to be faction based or they end up like gankests full of the worst type of community these games have to offer .

Yet another game with so many possibilities where they are all drowned out by the factor of people who will be doing nothing but trying to ruin your day, leaving the game empty before long and the developers confused.

Meanwhile, the criminal flagging system continues to be just that. They get flagged. Oooh, how terrible! They can’t go into the town. They have name color changes and people won’t trust them. Oh noes. We’ve all seen how well that doesn’t work… oh, wait, it seems more like they are running an ‘item protection insurance’ thing too, which is just “Really, again?”

Seems like all these indie attempts to make online games, are throwing in PvP in because they know the huge battle royal audience out there loves it, and maybe, in someway, will also make their game populated and successful.

Such a waste.

Yup. I was all onboard until “ruthless PvP”. This is exactly what I want from an independent studio promising a new “player-defined” MMO, another gankbox.

Oh, well.

Yeah, I usually don’t mind a bit of PvP in the games that I play, but I’ve never really seen the appeal of this sort of PvP.

PvP games are fine in and of themselves, but it really feels like a feature that the sandbox MMO genre just can’t shake off. If only one (1) sandbox MMO with PvE only would launch in the near future, what would happen? Clearly many of us are beyond starved for such a game to exist.

What would happen is that people who are interested in such a game would show up and play it like crazy. There’s always a rush to anything that seems close, even if it is smaller servers and early access… and the fact that this does not translate to MMO developers leaves me very confused and saddened.

There’s a huge following of smaller group or solo games that are even partially aligned toward this, and that should be enough to inspire some studio out there!

I agree! If nothing else, surely some MMO developer would have smelled the money in a big, well-done PvE sandbox by now?

Same here. Just another shitty gankbox to add to the pile. Like we don’t have enough of those already.
