Final Fantasy XIV could still arrive on Nintendo Switch if console companies decide to play nice

How are you not playing this on PC in the first place?
Naoki Yoshida of Final Fantasy XIV fame was at this year’s E3, and that means interviews with the man himself. One of those interviews from VGR brought up the question of whether or not the game could possibly arrive on the Nintendo Switch, which prompted some excitement about the idea that it might come to the platform. After all, Yoshida says that he would like that!

Except that this isn’t a new answer; it’s the same answer that fans have been getting since the last hardware generation when people were asking about the game arriving on the Xbox 360. It’s always been the same answer.

The team behind FFXIV insist on the game having full cross-play compatibility between all platforms it can be played on (so console players and PC players are on the same servers) and no additional monthly fees beyond the subscription. Those two requests long prevented it from appearing on Xbox consoles (as Microsoft didn’t like the idea of the game not requiring an Xbox Live subscription or cross-play with PlayStation users), and they’re likely the same things holding back any Switch port. So we remain in a world where you have to play on your PlayStation 4 or your desktop.

I love the Switch. I love XIV… I don’t think the two of them should get together.

i would probably buy it again just to be able to slob it out in handheld mode in bed honestly but we dropped the PS3 for a reason. By the end Void Ark 24 mans were freezing/crashing the game or even hard locking the console entirely because it was doing too much and the hardware could not deal with it. A lot of the biggest looking Switch games only run because of a lot of trickery e.g BotW’s semi cel shading to seriously lower detail to mask a lower render distance and one giant ‘sheet’ of water at sea level so there is only one body of water and physics to deal with on the map.
I would love to be able to take my switch to a friends and we both plop them down on the table in freestand mode and get out the joycons to run some dungeons or something together and maybe it could do stuff like deep dungeon fine. But the 72 player pvp stuff like Shatter? i doubt it.

I mean shit even the PS4 Pro has trouble loading in all the players in a city around you at once so how could the switch do it without melting?

I would be thrilled if FFXIV came to Switch, or if DQX came to the U.S. I’ve been interested in trying one of Square Enix’s MMOs for awhile, but I’m not going to buy a PS4 or install Windows just for one game, even a game as massive as FFXIV.

we just finally dumped one weak console that was holding the game’s future development back, lets not jump right back into the same problems >.<

By the by, there is no way Sony will be happy about this. Fortnite is one thing, but a Final Fantasy title? Heh. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just told Square to FO.

Didn’t they already cancel the PS3 version? If the PS3 can’t handle it, I have a hard time thinking the Switch will handle it that much better. Besides, even if I was still playing FFXIV, having to buy the game an additional time just to be able to play it on the Switch doesn’t seem that attractive to me.

So Sony is being a stick in the mud about crossplay with Fortnite while Microsoft and Nintendo have it (Microsoft even going so far as to take a jab at Sony over it). Sony, however, is allowing crossplay with FFXIV while Microsoft and Nintendo are rejecting it. I think RNG might be contagious at this point, only explanation I can think of for this level of crazy.

How would an mmo of that caliber even work on the switch?

Have people even given a thought to what that would mean for the future of the game? The huge limits that would be imposed on it? It will be like going back to PS3 support in less than a year. Move forward not backwards.
