Elite Dangerous drops new cinematic video with tantalizing ‘space legs’ tease

Two more days until Beyond: Chapter Two arrives in Elite Dangerous, superfluous colons in tow! And other more interesting things, too, as Frontier dropped a new cinematic video for the game this morning.

“It’s a dangerous galaxy out there but the call of the void is strong for Elite Commanders. All they need is a ship,” Frontier quips. “We’re proud to present ‘Lift-Off,’ our latest cinematic short in the Commander Chronicles series.”

And yes, the Krait – a surprise reveal for the game yesterday – is featured in the video. What else is in the video? Space legs – basically, it’s Elite’s Walking in Stations, literally characters walking around with visible leggers, something the playerbase has begged for forever. It’s not coming in this update, but it’s in the video, which has Reddit abuzz anyway. Enjoy!

TIL people still believe Elite: Dangerous’ cinematics have a relationship to gameplay.

Literally the first shot of the 2014 launch trailer was of commanders walking around their hangar.

This community’s outrage is a seriously hard thing to predict.

I am so stoked. The Krait looks so sexy and if this is another step toward legs it is another step toward not playing any other game ever again.

From what I remember the devs said space legs wouldn’t be in the Beyond updates (2018’s stuff) but it is something we’ll be getting in the future, could be quite cool although personally I would prefer more inhospitable space alien stuff.

They’re doing a Krait Q&A livestream tonight at 7 PM BST for anyone interested https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/434915-Krait-Expectations-(26-06-7-00-PM-BST)

Since I own the original Elite on my Commodore 64 I really should pick this one up but haven’t yet. Very tempting with stuff like this though.

Very cool Bree. As I keep saying, the day they add ‘space legs’ is the day I will be all-in with Elite. I’ve never cared for the ‘truck games’ where your character is basically your vehicle.

On a related note, I could never understand why Eve lets you create these beautiful human avatars, and yet they totally abandoned ‘space legs’. A big missed opportunity for them.

I’ve never played Eve or been part of it’s community, but I remember Massively covering it years ago. The players didn’t want space legs and thought it a waste of effort when there was more important things to do. This was back during monocle gate. The outrage was so great they had to redo their road map and eventually even pulled out the living quarters for your character they had already put in.

Honestly I sort of think they were right. Elite is having enough problems creating content or giving the players the tools to create their own, space legs is just a distraction at this point if your core game play loop isn’t strong yet.

I hear what you’re saying about dev priorities, but as a personal preference I do not care for ‘truck’ games. I want to be able to get out of my vehicle and do other things. The reason Star Trek Online works as well as it does is because it gives you that multidimensional aspect.

As far as Eve is concerned, I still maintain that developing and expanding on those very appealing human avatars players create is a missed opportunity and chance to expand their audience. To my eye the Eve avatars look better than those from more than a few newer games.
