World of Warcraft shows off its War Mode benefits

What if, instead of random chance, we just... let you work on things?

It seems only fair that World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth will give players a bit more reason to go to war. So it seems like the right time to roll out the newly robust war mode, which is all about turning on a PvP experience at all times. You place yourself in more danger, but you also have PvP talents available at all times, and you get new gameplay options like chests and bounties to contend with.

If you’ve been gone from the game for a bit, though, you might be more interested in a video going through the history of every single WoW expansion up to the present in a short span of time. Dedicated fans and players will probably find all of this information to be old hat, but anyone who took a break will probably benefit from the walk through time. (Not Timewalking, that’s different.) You can view it just past the break.

In Classic even back at launch, never mind today, you could flag yourself any time or all the time on PvE servers. Oh, the good times we had at Crossroads before Battlegrounds went in! I can’t wait for Classic WoW to return in an official capacity. :)

I wonder if paying for Facebook WoW will get you Classic when it launches for the same money? Have they decided that yet?

If so, maybe I will start paying for current WoW and stick my head in the door for this PvP War Mode, mainly just to show my financial support for Blizzard concerning bringing Classic back. I’m still shocked but very happy they’re doing that, and I can’t wait for it!

I couldn’t care less about PvP

And I imagine that is why you play on a pve server .

Also if you could care less why comment ? My guess is you care a lot because this expansion has an emphasis on pvp .

I comment because maybe, just maybe, one of the team will look through this article to get some feedback from outside of their forums. So I want them to know exactly how boring I think it is when I read about PvP. World PvP has been dead for nearly a decade.

And I imagine that is why you play on a pve server .

Yeah but come next expansion, this will no longer be a thing.

My guess is you care a lot because this expansion has an emphasis on pvp .

I care about this as much as I cared about any mention of pvp on any other expansion. Content I do not engage in. Content that barely makes sense in the narrative any more. I honestly can’t remember the last time world pvp was a thing… maybe tbc ? Stuff that existed before world flying in Azeroth. But while the story is about faction conflict (*yawn* why bother after destroying the burning legion? Seems pretty mundane.) I can’t help but think that most of this faction conflict is going to be in the PvE side of the game.

I was looking at the screenshot in the article with the pistol and cutlass and was thinking how it would be cool if they made a new class called Pirate/Privateer that uses pistol in one hand a a cutlass in the other.

And as a joke to have a pet like hunters, but an evil monkey that only stand on their shoulders and has only specific skills, one of which is Evil Monkey Point where it points at enemies and they get fear and inability to move for 5 seconds.

That’s Outlaw spec from the Rogue class (Formerly, Combat…R.I.P).

Reader

Yep like Utakata said, the pirate rogue spec has been a thing since Legion. No monkey though, but you could just have a monkey battle pet follow you.

This is all about pushing esports and turning WoW into a viable Esports arena game through PvP.

https://www.curbed.com/2018/6/28/17514410/arlington-esports-stadium-video-games

That’s been their goal all along and is the reason for all these changes that no one can understand why they would do it that way. Whenever you’re puzzled by something, just remember: Esports.

This is also why I’m not all that excited about D4. It will be an arena PvP game, built from the ground up to be a contestant game and watched in huge arenas. Because that’s where the money is.

How is open world PvP esports?

Yeah, sorry Blizzard. But no amount of bribery is going to fool me into pretending I actually care about the faction war.

I dont, I never will, the only joy I will get from War mode is laughing at opposite faction players who are flagged and cant touch me

Reader
Rabidwargamer

Too bad you won’t even get that joy. They are sharded to only be with fellow flagged players.

They are doing what they want to do just as you are doing what you want to do , the nice thing about WoW is you always had the option not to be forced into pvp .

Making such a comment on here trying to belittle them for that only really makes you look small .

Yeah, sure, because what I totally wanted to do with my subscription time was stand around Goldshire on a PvE server and not be able to turn in starting quests because 110’s were continuously murdering every NPC in town. Everybody gets to play how they want, uh-huh.

Reader

You won’t see anyone who is flagged. You will only see people flaggged for peace mode like you are. Only PvP flagged players see other PvP flagged players.

This may bring me back to the game later in the year . I like what I saw in last weeks welcome back the zone scaling seems to work quite nicely and has brought quite a bit of challenge while questing ( at least at the lower levels ) . I always enjoyed world pvp in WoW I really haven’t experienced as good in all the games I have played since leaving . It’ll be interesting to see what its like now and go through the expansions I have missed ,given my last expansion was Wrath of the Lich king I think that means there is about 4 to play through before I even get to Battle for Azeroth

I can’t help feeling that if PvP doesn’t provide its own incentives and satisfaction that make people want to play it, then there’s something wrong with the implementation, and bribing people to play it isn’t the answer.

Reader
Leiloni

They’re not bribing people. The system was poorly designed for Legion so they’re fixing it and those of us who enjoy PvP are quite excited.

Reader
Yoshi Senpai

By that logic raids shouldn’t drop gear because if they were so great people would just play them.

Reader
thirtymil

Well that’s slightly different logic really. Raids already have their incentive (gear drops) and satisfaction (boss kills). World PvP doesn’t seem to have anything approaching the same kind of incentives, as far as I’m aware.

Hence adding a passive bonus to XP gain isn’t really the same solution, not compared with, say, adding world towns to fight over and gear drops for holding them for a certain amount of time (as ESO does with Cyrodiil, for example).

Hopefully this system will provide some sort of balancing with the amount of players on each faction who have War Mode enabled, because far too often, even with the supposed megaserver technology, sides always appear completely lopsided in the open world, no matter what server I play on. I am certainly looking forward to War Mode though, maybe it will bring world PVP back in a good way. It’s nice to see some recognition that open PVPers deserve a bit more reward. Hunting down bounty targets (or being one!) sounds like fun too.

If nothing else, this will be a nice bonus to experience while leveling for the first couple of days or so. When enemy players start showing up on the zones where I’m leveling up, however, it’ll be time for me to turn it off.

Reader
Ben Stone

Can only turn on or off in the main capital (Orgrimar or Stormwind). So no selective flagging, it’s all in or out.

Also War Mode balances out the alliance and horde numbers on each map. So there will be pvp and you should only turn it on if you actually enjoy it.

A couple of things… I’m aware of only being able to turn it on and off in Stormwind/Ogrimmar, but that’s only a few minutes travel time to spend the first time I start encountering hostile players after which, yes, I will leave it off. And since both Horde and Alliance have separate leveling areas, there’s going to be no way to balance players between the factions within a zone, even remotely, until enough people start hitting higher levels and working on the war campaign on the opposing faction’s continent. For however long that takes — probably 2 – 3 days tops before there’s a significant enemy presence — it’s just bonus experience for minuscule risk.

Reader
Ben Stone

I would give it 1 day tops before you see the area flooded with the opposite faction. The point being you cant just turn it off when you spot people. It will take time to run back to where you were questing, and you have no idea when it will be ‘safe’ again.

I doubt the 10% xp boost is enough to entice players who hate world PvP. The first time they get killed they will turn it off forever. For those that like open world PvP this should help keep it more balanced than the current servers which are always heavily weighted one faction or another.

Reader
Leiloni

From what I’ve read you encounter people of the opposite faction at 112, so I agree it’ll happen quickly.

But I want to reiterate that the 10% XP boost is not intended as an incentive to flag. It’s intended as a balancing mechanic, because when you’re forced to interrupt your leveling in order to PvP, you will gain XP slower, so to balance that out, they introduced the XP boost.

Either way PvEers who think this is a joke and they can just get free XP boosts will quickly discover otherwise. It’s attitudes like that that just make me want to take a break from questing to go find those people and kill them.
