One Shots: My name is Captain Vanity

As I’m off on vacation this week, I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to cull through the previous One Shots comment section for great pics like I usually do. So I’m going to have to beg your forgiveness for a little indulgence here, because in this edition, I’ll be sharing nothing but my own screenshots. Feels like a cheat, because I do that all the time in normal news articles and columns, but why not?

First up is my tribute to the late, great Marvel Heroes. However sad it went out, I had some great times in that MMO and loved the crazy superhero encounters. Such as, in this instance, Captain Marvel giving Carnage a little something to think about before he swings that hand-axe around.

I’ve been part of a Dungeons and Dragons Online weekly group in which we all rolled up new characters and started going through all of the game’s missions. Such a blast, I highly recommend grouping for this game! Anyway, I thought it was both genius and a tease for the last mission of the newbie island to show off a dragon and get you this close… while NPCs fought it and you ran away. You’re only level 1, after all!

One of my screenshotting habits this past year is to try to get really good, up-close shots of enemy mobs. So much art and work goes into them, yet we actually see and recognize so little because they always are in motion and we’re trying to kill them. This tree-thing is from LOTRO, and I’m deeply impressed by how creepy the artists made it.

WildStar’s housing still takes my breath away, especially when I witnessed what far more skilled people could do with the system. A couple of years ago I toured around this absolutely amazing house that was built from scratch, and it’s become the standard of excellence for me ever since.

I haven’t been a human lowbie in World of Warcraft in ages, certainly not since Cataclysm, so I had some fun tooling around Elwynn Forest a few weeks ago. I definitely remember Princess the boar, although I don’t recall her being this big — or having that award pinned on her. Wait, HOW is it pinned on her?

Have you been out and about with friends or random strangers lately in MMOs? For this week’s screenshot challenge, post a picture or two of those grouping adventures and let us know how they went!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

I have to admit that this game is all around better than BDO as it is now … if BDO was still the same game that it was at launch, it would be more of a dead heat.

Black Desert is just such a clusterfuck of broken systems, gimped features, and worthless PvP.

I had been planning on going back to BDO now that I am back at work and nearly done with school, but nah … FFXIV is getting a sub & I have already started shopping around for a Free company to shack up with once I am finished running through the low level content.

Today I come to One Shots with a little bit of a request. I need help making up my mind!

Recently I was playing around in the Blade & Soul character creator, making some iterative tweaks to my summoner, and now I can’t decide how she should look. Should I stick with the old or buy an appearance change to swap to the new?

Image 1 is the new look I came up with

Image 2 is the old look I’ve been using since I started playing

Your input is appreciated!

I like the new. The new hairstyle looks great and the eyes seem to stand out more. Nice job!

The first one is way better. The more subtle green, with striking red eyes goes better with the grey tone of the ears and tail. Not to mention the warmer skin tone helps with that too. As does the hair style, which gives the character a more mature and experienced feel to her…

…my opinion here is subjective though. o.O

You definitely put your artist’s eye to work for this feedback! So far, everyone I’ve asked including IRL seems to prefer the appearance change. Looks like my indecisiveness is over. :P

I vote new look.

I don’t play Blade & Soul, so you might want to take my opinion lightly here, but I also think the first ( the “new”) design is more engaging.

Good to see you posting, as always, Vexia!

Normally, the only groupings I get into are duos with Natalyia. But we have been doing a lot of Conan Exiles stuff with the Happy Shiny Exiles with people you probably know. :) It has been a lot of fun, though I’ve left most of the photo ops to MJ.
I do have a few good shots of The Great Derketo Adventure: The Quest for Kitties.

We succeeded… pay no attention to the party member being sacrificed. We did get our Derketo Religion Knowledge.

And you can’t have a party with strangers without mentioning all the Megaversary fun in Secret World Legends as we all mob giant Beehemoths. This event has been so much fun, it really captured the soul of the Secret World we remember.

“What crab friends, Uta?”

…oh they’re there. It’s nice and quiet here though.

Heh. I know exactly where you are too. Those crabs, yeah. Lol. First time I went in there I stood right front of one thinking I was looking at a weird rock formation. The next thing I know, it bit a chunk off of me!

Oh, yes. They are there.

For a clothie in Vanilla’ish WoW, that place would been a nightmare. But for the Force Mage among other “clothie” classes in B&S, the ability to make short work of an ambush is key to not really sweating that here. :)

I thought all your crabby friends were posters here on Massively, Uta? :-D

Lotro: The Old Forest(where one can find Tom Bombadil and his house), The Last Homely Home and Weathertop. The early game really is special.

Two pictures showing off(Imo) how modern WoW can look nowadays. The right one is from a cutscene, it does show an ingame location in-Engine but is touched up by the developers.

Suramar City is an amazing place to visit…until some official barks out, “Something’s not quite right!”, and then all Hell breaks loose. It’s safer to go sight seeing in Alterac Valley, IMO. :(

I loved all of Suramar, but yeah, there were numerous times in Suramar City where I was sitting here in my chair, yelling naughty words at my screen, because some patrolling NPC suddenly had a danger sense to rival Spider-Man’s!

…I am pretty sure the Nightborne bred with Murlocs. They certainly could agro like them when guards got triggered. :(

Let me tell you something…in case you were not there.

In beta that Old Forest was hard as hell and I loved it. The difficulty and the density of the tress got tuned way down before launch though. There is/was some quest where you have to carry a water bucket to the edge of the forest or something and chat was full people both laughing and frustrated simultaneously.

Reader
Koshelkin

I would have loved to see a denser and more difficult Old Forest tbh but with it’s place as a quest area for players from 18-20 it’s better they scaled the difficulty down.

I agree — the original version was much more challenging, and made the Old Forest more ominous, but it was a bit too much to throw at early-level new players

It might have given the game an early reputation as a “hardkore” style MMORPG, when that really wasn’t the flavor the developers were going for …

Cheers
