Shroud of the Avatar opens up optional ‘rewards’ subs, stretch goal cash shop to fund episode 2

With release 55 now behind it, Portalarium is focused on the future of Shroud of the Avatar. Specifically, that means episode 2, which is basically the second season of content for the game. To fund that content, the studio has opened up what it’s calling a “stretch goal store” tied to the episode.

“These are stretch goals with rewards that can be used in the game now (or at least very soon),” Portalarium says. “These rewards are completely unique. They will not be sold in the add-on store, in-game nor as a bundle item. Once the stretch-goal is met we will begin work on the functionality for Episode 2 and all the items purchased would gain some function related to the goal when Episode 2 launches. For instance the foal from the Mounts stretch goal would grow into a horse that you could then ride. Each goal will have a progress bar underneath tracking the progress. General philosophy is that these items cost slightly more than equivalent items because they are linked to stretch goals.” $42,500 was raised on the last stream alone.

The company has also kicked of a new rewards program, which looks like an optional subscription to us; for $9 monthly, players will be picking up a monthly currency stipend, vet titles, dyes, potions, and $5 credit toward month livestream stretch goals. We’ve tucked the game’s latest livestream below – the beginning is worth a look for the Antiques Roadshow spoof!

The optional sub is a long awaited, oft asked for and welcome addition. It helps people get into the livestream stretch goals who otherwise would have missed it and is a big pile o’ stuff for $9.

The final tally for the livestream was $54,500

Show me a game that isn’t “all about the moeyzzz” and I’ll show you a game that isn’t active right now.

Tried it for the 3d time few days ago. My first attempt lasted like 5 minutes, 2d – 15 min. This time I managed over an hour. I doubt I’ll ever beat this record tho.

I hated pretty much everything in SOTA except the font. I love the font in this game. Makes me wonder why MMO devs often ignore how it looks even in big MMOs. Like in LoTRO where the font in quest window is obnoxious.

Would be a nice question for Daily Grind

Wes Anderson has the best font imaginable in all worlds.

Sadly an hour won’t even get you to the beginning of the experience of Shroud. But if you hate all of it, thanks for trying anyway! 3x trying something you hate is a good effort.

It’s sad that players have to go through such a poor initial experience. It’s a great game once you get past all of that. Assuming of course you like RPGs.

I truly cannot believe they are going to start on an Episode 2 when Episode 1 still needs a lot of work. Combat is still not balanced and is constantly having various skills “nerfed”, quest chains are still broken and scenes are still left unpolished. Finish Episode 1 before you begin asking for more money!

In the gaming industry layoffs are definitely common but not when there is still a ton of work to do, combined with the talks of an expansion! It will be interesting to see their latest SEC filings, because there is no way they can continue at this rate. I truly worry for those players still pledging money. I hope it works out for them.

What you’re talking about is exactly what’s happening for the foreseeable future. The stretch goal store just barely opened and I doubt Episode 2 work starts this year. It’s certainly not on the schedule for the next 3 months, although lots of polish is.

That isn’t what was discussed during the begathon. Richard said the game would be finished in the next 12 months.

He said Episode 2 will be finished in 12 months? I don’t think that’s accurate, maybe Episode 1 polish. Or maybe he said it will be 12 months of work. I didn’t hear anything about Episode 2 being done a year from now though.

Yes he did. Go back and watch it. He talks about it 1:05:37

Any rough time frame of when that was? It was fun the first time but not worth another 4 hour viewing.

Begathon, eh?

Staff reductions happen. The issues with Shroud are not the type that are greatly impacted by the staff that have been let go. But only time will tell.

To fund that content? 10 million isnt enough but 50k dribs & drabs through a store or stream events are?
Pool heating money more like.

And you’ve played exactly how much of the game to be able to talk about how much content is or isn’t in it? I bet none or a few minutes. The game has tons of content. The best housing system in any game, pretty much ever, and a pretty large world. It’s not perfect by any stretch but for those that have made it past the intial stages it’s a great game. Not for everyone for sure.

But hardly “pool heating” money.
