Defiance 2050 officially launches as a free-to-play reboot on PC and console today

Trion has a big launch on its hands today as it pushes Defiance 2050 out of beta into a live state on PC and both core consoles. As we’ve been covering, Defiance 2050 is set to be a “completely from-the-ground-up recreation” of Trion’s original Defiance that “overhauls the exciting story and groundbreaking gameplay of the original, reimagining the San Francisco-based sci-fi shooter experience for current gaming hardware.” Classic Defiance, which sparked widespread use of the term “transmedia synergy” buzzword across the MMO genre when it launched alongside a SyFy TV series of the same name, will continue on for those who prefer it as well.

If you’ve previously picked up a founder pack, you’ve already been in the beta, but as of today, the game is free-to-play and everyone can hop on in. Launch time is technically 1 p.m. EDT this afternoon, so if you’re reading this in the morning, you’ve got just a few more hours to wait. Why not check out some of our coverage while you do? We recommend our hands-on experiences from E3 and GDC!

Update: We’ve added the new trailer too!

Game itself is solid, as it always was. This is a whatever launch, on par with Trion Games, tho. Rubberbanding, freezing, full of bugs, the normal.

The gunplay in Defiance is extremely satisfying, and i would recommend for that alone, but if you want something deep, and lasting, with a sense of progression and belonging to a world, go play Fallen Earth.

Defiance scratches a coop mmo shooter itch nicely, but the game itself as a rpg is pretty week. The Canyon Province in FE is way more rich and fitting. Defiance doesn’t have a crafting system, and i find it’s wardrobe system awful.

Ahhhh, if FE had Defiance graphics and gunplay….

I’m noticing that the game is freezing every few minutes for several seconds at a time. Based on the user reviews I’ve read, that’s not everybody’s experience. I don’t remember this happening with the original version.

Also looking at the Steam reviews (Mostly Negative so far from only 136 reviews though) it sounds like they’re once again having the same issues they had with Defiance’s initial launch.

I’ll probably give it another look but not going to bother spending a dime on it, esp. if they try to do the BS of reselling me things I already owned in the previous iteration or putting price tags on items that were previously obtainable through gameplay.

Just started. Pleasantly surprised so far, there are cool fire and atmospheric effects that werent in original game, textures are sharper. Game looks pretty good now.

But my god, whats up with lods in this game? 50 meters away player animations look just silly

I wanted to like this game way back but it just didn’t work for me. I really hate the whole having to follow a story thing in mmo’s today. I wish it had a more open world freedom to it.

I first played this on PC and was VERY underwhelmed. But, when I tried it out on xbox one x I was more favorably impressed. Surprisingly the UI scaled better to the higher resolution than the PC client’s did, and it felt at least a little bit more like the enhanced edition it was touted to be.

On the downside holy crap there’s lots of jumpiness with NPCs and player characters popping back and forth shifting positions due to some network code oddities! It was infuriating to try and play in crowded areas when everything seemed to be making short little teleport hops all over the place. Plus, the xbox client crashed a couple times on me.

I’ll wait a month or so and pop back in to see if they’ve resolved these basic issues. I don’t see this becoming a major obsession of mine, but it could be a fun diversion now and again if they can resolve this sort of thing.

While I didn’t see much difference in the closed beta other than some futzing around with the classes / skills I am still going give it a download and maybe spend a casual couple of weeks with it.

You never know it might reclick with me and end up being somewhat fun, time will tell I guess.

If you played the first one, you might find this one too similar, but I never played the first one so this is interesting to me.

I can’t wait to play it without holding back.
