Dauntless counts 2M players since open beta, announces city-reshaping ‘Coming Storm’ expansion

Well now, here comes Dauntless with some nice big numbers to boast about from its open beta: Phoenix Labs has apparently counted 2 million players since the start of its free-to-play open testing. Not too shabby at all. And all those players are about to be diving into some brand-new content, an expansion called The Coming Storm that launches on August 9th.

“The Coming Storm begins when an Ostian Dreadnaught, bristling with industrial might and an indignant crew, crashes into Ramsgate, the central hub in Dauntless, reshaping the sprawling city and introducing players to a variety of new NPCs, stories, and quests. A new Behemoth, Koshai, the Sovereign of Thorns, stirs beyond the horizon. Members of the Ostian faction also bring with them new technology. Players will be able to craft and wield new gear and weaponry to take on the Behemoth threat – including a explosive new grenades and the first truly ranged weapon: the Ostian Repeaters.”

Yes, the existing hub – shown in the image up above – is getting a bit of an unplanned makeover thanks to the baddies. “Players will notice a distinct (and deadly) change to the Behemoth ecosystem in The Coming Storm as the introduction of Koshai causes the other beasts to evolve and change beyond their usual behavior and form,” Phoenix Labs says. “Expect a new spin of classic encounters and keep Slayers’ skills honed.”

Forget the new weapon, to hell with the new behemoths, screw patches for bugs… Just give me that new freaking cell vendor so you can actually obtain useful upgrades in the game wihtout spending a half a year+ doing weeklies. RNG is pure f-ing evil.

Dauntless plays like the devs started working on it a month ago.

That’s not remotely true. Super over exaggerate much?

I find Dauntless to feel better than any MH game I have ever played.

Yeah, it plays really well for me too.

Monster Hunter doesn’t seem to be lighting the world on fire – maybe Dauntless can have a cadence close to Warframes/Path of Exiles and take the crown away from lazy Capcom.

Back on the radar.

Of course Monster Hunter isn’t out on PC yet. Though Dauntless does give everything out for free. It looks like it was almost set up to sell stuff with a lockbox pay to win model that in the end didn’t end up happening, you just end up earning the lockboxes as you play instead and everybody earns the same amount.

I think it’s a pretty decent game and all, though I’ve never played Monster Hunter games and don’t know how they compare. Obviously the free vs. premium will make a difference in the long term where if Dauntless does things right they could keep a player base longer because of it. It all will depend on their updates from here on out.

Very welcome new content, but yeah, good thing to update the hub, it’s pretty damn boring. Finally a ranged weapon too.

Monster Hunter being released the same day won’t help, but eh, Dauntless is free.
And it’s not like Monster Hunter is doing well in the long run either, crazy sales but their GAAS model ain’t working too well with the very meager content added (shareholders were not too happy with long term performance).

Does MHW even have the G Rank content that previous ones have had?

Nah.
Coming in… around six months if it’s consistent with the rest of the series.

MHW also has a lot less monsters than usual (but of course a lot of those are kinda palette swaps or different sizes – not unlike Dauntless really).
But yeah, it started with less (even if levels and fighting multiple monsters is much better), and added less in the same time frame than its ancestors.

On PS4 now it’s hard to find players in the lower brackets, and even at the top, if it’s not an event of some sort it’s not what it was at release.

Well that sucks. Though I think part of why MHW has less monsters than ‘normal’ is because this is essentially the first in a new iteration/generation of Monster Hunter and the gameplay sounds like it’s changed quite a bit to where they can’t just copy-paste all the old monsters back into the game.

The Monster Hunter Ultimate Generations coming for the Switch is still using the old engine or whatnot and it’s basically a ‘best of’ the pre-MHW stuff (and it was already out in Japan in 2017 under MHG XX or whatever).

Also sounded like MHW might’ve been rushed? *shrug* Hopefully they’ve got some big updates planned and are intent on keeping the game updated well into 2019. Or release some sort of expansion later down the line, who knows.

Feels like this game lost quite a bit of its momentum after the launch back in late May. Having to wait until August for any meaningful update isn’t going to help the game, especially when it’s launching its update on the same day that MHW launches. While yeah not everyone will be jumping over to MHW since Dauntless is F2P, Dauntless had a window of opportunity to really capitalize on and they pretty much lost it already.

Sorry, is this an expansion for a game that’s still in beta?

It’s more just a large update that adds new stuff to the game and I guess will be changing up the existing stuff as well. Guess that explains why there’s been basically nothing since its open beta launch and this update.

Nail in coffin if this isn’t a (no pun) game changer. Monster Hunter Online has already proven the depth and variety it’s giving to its customers and Dauntless has some catching up to do even before MHO is released.

Well, kind of depends. Dauntless is F2P, MHW is a $60 game. Dauntless offers a more streamlined/casual experience in terms of it focuses on just the monsters while MHW has some pretty deep systems and you can do more than just hunt monsters.

Good points and this is what I was thinking when I commented. There is just more to do in MHW where as, I can tap Dauntless bounties about 3 times and I’m done play. The game will flesh out over time for sure but ya.. was hoping for more variety.

Yeah, the daily/weekly quest grind gets boring as heck and I already lost interest in the game myself. Don’t really know if I’ll check it back out with the update right away either since MHW will be out.
