The Daily Grind: Which expansion helped out an MMO the most?

We have talked a lot about great and terrible MMO expansions in the past, but most often, we approach such conversations from our personal enjoyment. However, there’s another way to look at expansions, and that’s to evaluate them in hindsight and point to ones that gave their titles the greatest boost and added the most value and useful features to the game.

Now that we have the advantage of being able to look at expansions over time, which would you say helped out an MMO the most? Which gave that game a great bump in population, interest, and long-term success?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Star Trek Online: Legacy of Romulus.

It’s not even close. The way that expansion breathed new life into a game that had been on maintenance mode should be taught in schools for business and design.

City of Heroes had Enhancement Diversification in Issue 6 and Invention System in Issue 9. Both greatly changed the game for the better. Other notable additions were the Mission Architect, City Of Villains, and the Alignment change system were all outstanding additions to the game. I still miss it every single day.

Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia and Treasures of Aht Urghan (less so treasures)

Promathia was about as perfect of an expansion as you can get. Amazing story, lots of content for all level ranges, content that stayed relevant years and years into the games life

Asherons Call 2:Legions was a really fantastic expansion. Its such a shame it came so close to the game already circling the drain.
