RIFT hangs ten with this year’s Summerfest

When we have a winged, masked figure riding a surfboard through the air in an MMO, we are firmly through the looking glass without any opportunity to go back. That’s probably not an issue with RIFT’s audience, since they’re used to a little… oddness in their fantasy MMO.

The air surfer is courtesy of this year’s Summerfest, which has returned through August 2nd and is sporting a “fantastic new tropical Tiki theme.” Yes, it’s all island living for this year’s event, even if you happen to be on the Prime progression server.

RIFT’s Summerfest includes scavenger hunts, seasonal quests, artifact piñatas, and a special minion questline, among other activities. There are plenty of items to chase, such as the aforementioned island surfboard, an Island Cove dimension, tiki decor, parrot pets, island cosmetics, and — naturally — hammocks.

RIFT Prime will only have access to content in the original zones,” Trion specified. “Prime subscribers will be able to purchase most of the Summerfest items from vendors in Sanctum and Meridian. The Nightmare Squirrel mount may drop from the final bosses of Expert Dungeons on Prime during this event!”

If any of you young grasshoppers don’t get that, I’m sure you will smile/laugh when you do. :P

Lol, that header image pretty much embodies the late stages of an MMO from launch, with a tidy lore and art direction to bind it all together, to many years later, when the wings, mounts and mini-pets create a visual and thematic hot mess.

When I was along for the ride it was kind of a joyful thing, but after having been gone for a while I have to say it doesn’t appeal to me anymore, at least not compared to something with the special coherence of a new world. Those are more fun to mess up anyway, right? There’s plenty of time to slide towards the laser dinos, but those early days of farmers and goblins are just waiting for the first cash shop outfit to run through the fields.?

I’ve always hated the “visual and thematic hot mess” tbh. I mean, it’s perfectly possible to sell cash shop outfits, mounts and pets that still “fit”. They don’t have to break the carefully crafted atmosphere and aesthetic of the game. Yet somehow, stuff that does always gets popular, resulting in devs making more of it. Sigh…

Yep, that’s how I feel about it, too! But these days I can either accept it or yell into the wind, so I try to do more A and less B (okay, some B, get off my lawn, hehe).

For better or for worse, I think with Nightmare Tide pretty much everything became explainable within the world without breaking canon…
