Fortnite makes building more fun and drops cake and llamas for its birthday

Can I return this muffin if I only ate half of it?
Happy birthday, Fortnite! Yes, Fortnite launched a year ago, though back then of course it was focused on PvE – remember at E3 2017 when our demo prompted us to call it Crowfall for PvE fans? Good times. Since then, of course, it’s gone over to the battle royale side, gently tugging its PvE content along for the PvP ride as it becomes one of the biggest games in the entire world. So really, it worked out OK for Epic Games in the end.

To celebrate the day, Epic is dropping cake, bringing back Playground mode tomorrow, adding a new weapon, and rolling out a themed quest. Plus, llamas.

“Celebrate #Fortnite1st with cake, loot, and a special in-game questline. Complete the questline to unlock Birthday Brigade Ramirez. While you’re partying, find and eat birthday cakes to earn event tickets which can be spent on the limited time Birthday Llama.”

The non-birthday stuff in the patch is worth a look took; Epic has basically made building easier and damage to structures more potent, running is less annoying, the kart got a nerf, and the resurrected Playground mode has new options to “let you and your squad set up team battles for practice and training.”

So I tried to see in their news feed and shit but…do they even work on the PvE half of the game anymore? Or has that gone the way of Just Survive, where it’s basically completely abandoned for the battle royal spinoff : (

I see it’s still for sale (and 50% off), but for the life of me can’t find any evidence that they’re actively working on it in a meaningful way to bring it to its supposed F2P launch.

Every patch has a ton of StW stuff in it.

I honestly don’t know why anyone keeps saying they abandoned StW, because I think I’ve only seen one minor patch that was mostly adjustments and tweaks, rather than new content. There’s a full game there already, and they give out so much loot that I’ve never felt any need to buy any additional llamas. I have 410 inventory slots and about 340 filled with schematics, heroes, etc. About half of those are legendary and epic.

It’s because StW doesn’t make headlines and all attention is focused on the BR side. It’s obvious the PvE side was a flop full of bad decisions which the devs have steadily been adding workarounds or making improvements for.

Look at the /r/Fortnite reddit. They’ve been regularly adding stuff to StW and making gradual improvements over time. Iirc with the latest patch they also put in the first part of Canny Valley, so it’s finally starting to no longer look like a shallow copy-paste of the previous zones and gets a continuation of the story that abruptly drops in Plankerton.

Interesting, gotcha. I mainly look to gaming press, so the total lack of coverage has been what’s influenced my perception most.

Have they…announced any concrete dates/windows for the F2P “launch” for StW yet? Any actually meaningful progress getting there? I’ve been waiting for that since I’m still not terribly keen on the notion of these survival sandboxy games, but the art style for Fortnite has always been enough of a draw for me to at least want to tinker around in it.

No they haven’t announced what their plans are for f2p yet.

More good stuff. I logged in this morning and grabbed my boatloads of free loot. I need to go through and recycle a bunch of lower-level traps and guns to free up inventory space. Glad they gave us another 25 slots, because I was really needing the room.

they are saying fortnite is a year old but i’m pretty sure that’s just referring to the BR mode and fortnite as a whole is not actually only a year old.

things must be feeling pretty good for STW players with this kind of marketting eh? XD

StW is a year old. BR hits one year in like… mid-late September.
