City of Heroes emulator SEGS cranks up powersets

Also, let's just put this out there, how about more robots?

The Super Entity Game Server (SEGS) continues to push forward with its version to bring a full-featured open source emulator of City of Heroes to the public. Before that happens there is a lot to be done, of course, as it is no small project to resurrect this game from the dead and reintroduce it in the grey arena of emus.

For those cheering SEGS on, there’s a great reason to rejoice this week. The team oh-so-casually posted a development screenshot this week with the instructions to look at the lower right — where there just so happens to be icons and menus for two of City of Heroes’ classic powersets. Looks like a major breakthrough has been made!

As a fun aside, it’s interesting to note that the City of Heroes subreddit is far more active than some of the subs for MMOs that are actually operating!

Excited about the SEGS emulator? Cautious or worried? Let us know below!

I’ve been hurt before, but damn this looks promising.

Still cautious but hopeful. If this could beat the spiritual successors by a couple years it could have some good momentum but I don’t see that happening. Though it remains to be seen if the spiritual successors capture the spirit and combat of CoH or if it is something else entirely in their zeal to ‘improve’ the gameplay.

Man I would have thought there would be 200-300 posts by now. What gives CoH diehards?

I’m of the same mindset as others here.
For nostalgia I’m sure I would log in once maybe twice. But it’s been 14 years since it launched and almost 6 since it was shut down. CoH will always hold a special place in my life, but I don’t think I can log into a game that will be a stagnant version of those fond memories. I’ve moved on sadly.

Interested but cautious. Hasn’t shown up on NCSoft lawyers radar yet no doubt.

Love CoH and it will always have a place in my heart, but I am now looking more towards the spiritual successors (CoT specifically), as I feel like revisiting it won’t give me the same experience as it did when I was younger.

I would more than likely give it a go for nostalgia sake, but I’m really placing my bets on CoT being the next big thing for me within this genre.

As much as I loved the 7+ years I spent in CoH, I can’t see myself spending much time in any zombie variation of it. I love messing with outfits in Paragon Chat about once a year, but I’d rather see a game actually make it out to production.

“it’s interesting to note that the City of Heroes subreddit is far more active than some of the subs for MMOs that are actually operating!”

That should be a clue that the alternates (DCUO, CO, etc) available currently simply aren’t good enough and if the right one came along, it would leave them in the dust.

To those who tried, how well does SEGS and Paragon Chat run on Windows 10. I vaguely recall COH not running properly on Windows 8 beta, been wondering if it’s worth trying on my modern PC.

Paragon Chat works fine on mine, and I’m running win10 with the Fall update (spring update can go suck a lemon). I’ve not tried SEGS yet, because it’s not really playable yet, it’s just an emu for the server, AFAIK.

I’ve never played an emulator of an MMO but this project is of great interest to me. Every time I play another MMO, even ones I truly enjoy, I miss CoH. Let me Super Jump around King’s Row again one day soon please!

You can do that in Paragon Chat, actually.

Yes all travel powers are unlocked and a few new ones.

Also if you really want to go into the weeds. Some folks have been making their own 3d models and loading them into the game.
