Star Citizen’s Around the Verse covers ground races, 3.3 ships, and security checkpoints

Hey guys, log into Star Citizen, I wanna do a Death Race! Yeah, maybe that isn’t the best nickname for the Scramble Race, which is actually literally a 16-person race, with a ground-vehicle version as well as one in space and no weapons to actually cause death. CIG says tests on the ground version are “really, really positive.” The latest episode of Around the Verse also includes mention of work on derelict ships, fog, 3.3 ships like the Mustang series, audio for props, mass transit, delivery lockers, and security checkpoints.

“Security checkpoints are going to become very important as soon as we move away from the armistice zones we currently have in the games and when we switch to a more nuanced system. And we’re currently working on the high security version which is going to be needed for Lorville but we can easily adapt it to other locations as well. It’s going to work very similar to how security checkpoints in present day airports work. They will come in different sizes and security levels depending on the local laws. There’s a list of items that are illegal in the area beyond the checkpoint and players pass through a scanner and if they’re not carrying anything illegal they can just go through. If they are carrying an illegal item then they will be stopped and they will be asked to give up the item or store it. They can choose to comply or they can choose to resist and then they will have to face the consequences. Skilled and clever players might be able to find ways how to circumvent security altogether in certain locations.”

And if you’re still protesting over the lack of progress on Arena Commander? “For all you fans of Star Marine and Arena Commander, the UI team has completed a wireframe pass on getting ship and item rentals integrated into both multiplayer game modes,” CIG’s Sandi Gardiner says.

No Man’s Sky NEXT just released and it is an extremely impressive update. The game is pretty fantastic now. An actual fully playable, impressive space exploration game (with what, 13 staff and a few years).

Elite Dangerous , another great space game, complete and fully playable.

I love SC is still just talking about stuff they might do. Nothing they implement is going to be worth it at this point.

i’m glad i was one that only bought in for $35 years and years ago.

well elite dangerous isnt complete otherwise they wouldnt keep updating it!

Let us know when either of those games becomes as huge as SC is going to be.

Let us know when SC codes in all the stuff they have been promising for years, and the stuff they keep promising with every new concept sale, on top of finishing up all the things they keep reworking for no reason other than busy-work.

is going to be.

Well, those games exist in a finished format. That’s something.

The physics in this game… lol. $200 million, 500 staff, 6 years and yet you’d see better physics from a $10 early access game made by a 15 year old.

because of the gross mismanagement and delay after delay, i’ve just given up and am taking a serious dive into elite dangerous, even though the ships in that game are so unremarkable looking and the graphics/presentation is pretty dull.

Quote packagegrope: “because of the gross mismanagement and delay after delay… ”

Quite the opposite. Handling such project wich evolved from more or less a copy/paste of a 20 years old space Pew-Pew game but with today 4 K graphics to 2 Triple-A, solo + MMO. Starting form 12 guys and 6M$ to current situation is amazing.

Not in ATV but roadmap have been updated with the 3.6 patch, giving visibility to what will come till Q2 2019 (feeds directly from CIG internal project management software Jira).

Features may move back and forth between patch of course, as everything is estimated, not engraved in stone:

Note: feel free to support other space game, NMS, ED, EVE, Hellion… Building unique game like SC+SQ42 does not alleviate gamers option to try something else in the meantime :)

well server meshing is delayed by 6 months now :( but it is a very complex system that i think will keep getting delayed for quite a while. SpatialOS has been in development for a long long time and thats the same thing and i think the distributed computing for crackdown 3 where multiple servers handling parts of the multiplayer maps is scrapped.

As have I. I got 4/5th of my full refund, and socked away a few ships to another acct just in case.. and then they started the quarterly releases and instead of improving on the crap physics and terrible flight model, or working on the piping systems and components and totally ignoring the horrible, awful navigation, they push out more ships (the only pipeline that is actually producing anything).. they keep reworking the quantum travel effects (the FX team being the only other devs to be releasing anything on time).
I tried trading, boring and takes forever to make any money, which I would forgive if it werent so damn boring and a nightmare to navigate from one place to another. And as for mining.. well I hear it works. I havent been able to test it because you have to spend real money to access the only ship you can test mining with. And on top of that, I have been waiting to test scanning, I own a scanning ship, but they haven’t actually implemented the scanning mechanic.. except for the mining ship.
I really really want to walk away from this mess. I bought into the promise of the original pitch, waited like everybody else, dreaming about owning my own millennium falcon and defending the project. Now im stuck with over a grand worth of pixel ships that i cant do anything with, because its no fun doing anything with them.
Truth: if they had made a first person game with skyboxes, per-determined landing zones and off the shelf tech for game systems and just developed the ships components and pipes, the game would have been close to 3/4th complete by now, and awesome.

What you describe is NMS with Wing Commanders ships style and on shelf tech that can’t handle bits precision mandatory to depict space vastness. Precisely the opposite of scope change made mid-2014.
This is fair to not agree to this change but you turn away right at the time CIG is able to provide all features by end of 2019. Not theoratically but because they do have all pipelines, talent and robust roadmap.

It does not matter if flight model is not optimized yet, this is a place holder until most components are integrated.
Facts is that guys in charge know a bit about space ships and never missed to deliver remarkable fun games to gamers… when ready to be stamped as finalized.

There are more to come during the next quarters than what we’ve got in 5 years. The right time to join.. assuming those joining do not expect to play a finished game, otherwise better wait for a Beta or release.

1) I wish SC was NMS. The game has 13 devs and more done with 13 devs and 3 years of work than SC has with 500 devs and 6 years of work. And as for 64 bit precision, every other space sim out there doesnt use it, and they depict the vastness of space all the time. Need examples? ED, EVE ONLINE, XREBIRTH, NMS and just to bring home the point FREELANCER depicts the vastness of space almost better than SC does after 7 years of development.
2) If you believe SC is going to even lock down their feature set by the end of 2019, I have my own space sim project im starting, and you can invest now for the low low price of 1000$ for a super detailed spaceship you can walk around in and admire (in jpeg form). With nifty blinking lights and whiring noises and spacey type stuff (using your imagination) that you can fully customize as long as fully customize means you can’t customize anything.
3) When your game is based almost exclusively on flying space ships, then the flight model matters. And when you have had a flight model for more than 4 years, and still can’t get it to fly right, Houston, you have a problem.
4) Fun? now your just trolling. The game is the exact opposite of fun.
5) I dont care if you spew your white knight all over other peoples posts. I have been deprogrammed, and will no longer tolerate “fidelity” smoke blown up my ass. Coming from you, its more insulting that anywhere near convincing.

Ill say this one more time. Dont reply to my posts. Im not talking to you, I dont want to talk to you, I dont want anything to do with you and your creepy Star Citizen Fanboy stalking. Once I figure out how to block you, Im blocking you. Stop harassing me.

I see many misconception of what others games are and more important, what they are not and will never be.

Missing for instance the 64-bit positioning is mandatory to keep accuracy in an open world. Does not matter for a 4 km square meters FPS map but is for space if you do not want to screw-up precision on long distance. Do you think guys at CIG decided to use 64-bit because 32bits positioning was allowing or not allowing to achieve SC scope?

You pretend to talk about a game without equivalence, not yet in ours hands and not comparable to already released games like ED, EVE, Freespace.
Even more clearly, you wish SC was NMS. You said it all. You sign for a project named NMS while the one we are talking about is a different project.

In short you are commenting on a project that was never intended to be NMS and definitively will never be.
There are 72 more ATV’s to go till end of 2019, you should really start to integrate that sooner than later.

Note: NMS and ED are at discounted price on Steam regularly. Multiplayer was added to NMS. Just get them, play as many time as you want their specific gameplay and scope, if you can swallow them.
In the meantime, SC will continue to be enriched with many features till Beta.

i like how part of this update is ‘our game is so broken right now that we introduced a place to drop off cargo because we can’t figure out how to get the admin npc to take cargo boxes.’

but hey, citizen kart is here now. that’s what everyone really came for, right?

Reader

Quote packagegrope: “is ‘our game is so broken right now that… ”

Drop off cargo are a clever way to handle queue of people waiting to reach a counter. That duplicate what is done IRL. DHL in EU do have already +1900 Drop off locations. And it works pretty well. They did not implemented it because their network was broken but because it make sense.

Reader

and I wonder how broken the drop of workaround is going to be once its in and being hammered by testers who cant get it to work.

i totally forgot about this game after i bought a huge capital ship last night in no man’s sky and parked 6 totally different style ships on it and recruited 4 NPC ships to do different style missions for me whilst i explore planets for fun.

Reader
Life_Isnt_Just_Dank_Memes

u can create ground vessels and huge bases as well and build on your freighter(capital ship). the game is 30 bucks right now and you can play it with a few friends and have multiple saves going on. join whoever, run into randos. i was just on a space station recruiting some specialists to man some stations i had crafted aboard my vessel when i heard someone singing behind me. it was another player. we had a cool talk about stuff we had seen.

you should give it a shot. it’s an unbelievable experience now.

how many players to a server does this game support? I’d heard it wasn’t truly “massive”, more like GTAO.

Reader
nomadmorlock9

All players are on the same server. When you are not in quantum travel, you are in an instance. Any one else in the universe in that same location will be in your instance up to (currently 50 players) the cap and then more instances of that physical location will be opened.

Reader
Ardra Ventax

so, 50, then. Thanks.

that’s not how it currently works at all now/yet.

the entire crusader sub system is 50 players currently. this is the enture playable map currently.

new server instances are spun up of the entire map when one fills up. that’s more or less a big part of what they got out of amazon – aws.

Skilled and clever players might be able to find ways how to circumvent security altogether in certain locations

Whenever I hear this sort of thing from game developers, I’m never clear what the heck they’re talking about from a game mechanics perspective. Once the first guy figures out how to get around security, surely everyone can.

Reader
nomadmorlock9

That is, if they want to fit out a specific type of ship with the stealth capabilities to do so.

In this situation, just because you can figure out how to do so, doesn’t mean it’s feasible to do in any given situation.

Oh I thought the security checkpoint was a personal checkpoint and not for ships. Like passing through security at the airport.

Yea, same when they talk about, “Worlds which change depending on YOUR actions!”

You know you are making an MMO right…stop it with the PR speak.

Reader

that just means the world changes through player actions not something that is pre-defined

It means they plan on adding another half dozen features sometime in the far distant future to allow you to hack computers, use smuggling NPCs etc. So really, its just words written on a design doc that will never see a coder until every other feature we have been promised gets made or neglected.
