One Shots: Motion sickness

Our headlining picture today comes with a request for some help, so we’re calling all Warframe players to give their aid!

“So I finally decided to check out Warframe,” said reader Ryuen, “but I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how not to get motion sick while sliding/bullet jumping/etc through the levels to an objective? *Tenno slides away*”

I am not the person to ask this. I get motion sick spinning my chair slowly with a child on my lap. I have been forbidden from going on Disney’s spinning tea cup ride. Doctors tell me that I still need training to master this “walking” thing.

“Here I am flying my spaceship over post-Golden Age Mars in Destiny 2. This one’s my favorite,” posted Mysecretid.

Post-Golden Age Mars looks very similar to Current-Barren Mars, in my non-expert opinion. Still, that’s a pretty groovy ride you have going there!

Reader Koshelkin was out exploring Gondor in Lord of the Rings Online and he came upon a cosplay convention tucked away in a hollow. What else is there to do in this situation than timidly ask for some group selfies and maybe some swag?

“I am sure you are going to get a lot of No Man’s Sky pictures but I am just going to stick with the one for now,” submitted Bals Big Brother. “I am not really sure how to describe this so I hope its a case of ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ Found him on the first planet I was initially stranded on, he seems a happy enough fellow — though not much of a conversationalist, it has to be said.”

You found a little spacesuit man! So adorable, that!

What happens in Final Fantasy XIV stays in Final Fantasy XIV… unless you hit the screenshot key.

Vincent spilled the beans on this one: “This was um… err… a bachelor/stag party we threw for one of our free company members not too long ago. The less said about the half-naked Lalafell, the better. Whatever you do, don’t stare directly into the eyes of the Roe in the back with the pig mask… resist!”

What makes the best backdrop for a well-executed selfie? Let us know your thoughts on this subject — and submit a picture or two of a perfect character selfie against a perfect background for this week’s screenshot challenge!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

When it comes to character selfies the backdrop becomes less important if there is an important lore character in your picture.
Case in point: my humble monk managed to snare Firiona Vie herself in EQ2 for a quick pic before she had to attend to more pressing matters.

Firiona Vie her own self! Nice catch, Ryuen!

In all my time playing Everquest II, I don’t think I ever encountered her, not even once, so good on ya!

It’s an old screenshot (from 2010 going by the filename) but iirc it was during some kind of holiday quest, the memory is hazy by now.

The city of Metropolis in the morning is a good selfie backdrop, I think.

It also helps when your character is a protege of Superman in DC Universe Online, so you can get Jimmy Olsen to take the picture while you pose. :-)

Thank you, Rafe.

Whatever problems DC Universe Online may have as a game, the city environments (Metropolis and Gotham) are truly gorgeous. Worth a look, just to see them, if you’re ever so inclined.

Selfies? Hmm. There are three types, IMO. The “Look Where I am.” type. Then there is the “Look Who I’m With!” And finally the “It’s All About Me.” selfie. And of course, the backdrops have everything to do with the types.

See if you can guess which type is which.

Those really are the three basic categories of selfies!

I think so. There may be some overlap, but fundamentally it covers it, I think.

I think the beach makes for a good selfie backdrop.

And yes, my character committed the sin of taking a vertical phone pic in current year. Maybe Eorzeans are limited to old flip-phones, so cut her some slack.

Thanks for the feature Justin!
And thanks for the motion sickness tips below, I’ll be sure to try them out.

In addition to what people below said, as soon as you start to feel sick, stop playing. Eventually, you should be able to play for longer periods of time as you adjust. I get motion sick with some games but not others, so I know it doesn’t get better by fighting through it. On the other hand, if you’re in the middle of a mission and don’t want to just abandon it, letting your eyes slip out of focus can help you make it to the end.

Also, check the display settings. Turning off Motion Blur (and possibly DOF) should help a lot.

So far I’ve maxed FOV, disabled DoF and motion blur and tried not looking at my warframes high speed acrobatic antics and it does help.
Maybe I’m just getting older or I’m so used to slower paced games now that this one is giving me some trouble at times.

A temple may not seem the best background for a selfie. Especially when taken by the statue of its deity, where prayers and gifts are offered.
Unless that god is you!

What makes the best backdrop for a well-executed selfie?

In front of some flying books in a god’s library, containing the sum of all knowledge, is a good start!
By the way, what is the collective noun for flying books? Couldn’t find it in this list! Also, a library?! ;P

No Man’s Sky has certainly come a long way since launch. I enjoyed it originally, as I had no real expectations from the hype. But there have most definitely been improvements with the “Next” iteration.

Here is one of the final screenshots I took with my original character after the huge update and improvements (including the new 3rd person option), and before I started again fresh with a new explorer.

I believe this planet is called Saccra…a humid tropical world, with little toxicity and radiation. Lots of flora and non-hostile fauna inhabit the world, and the ringed gas-giant in the background makes for lovely sights all-round.

I know the game will never be a true MMO, but I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some friends (and strangers) in my new travels. It’s a game in which to get lost, and enjoy the journey, wherever it takes you.

In a lot of ways, the improved No Man’s Sky is pretty much what I was looking for in that sort of space game.

Sure, it’s not perfect, and the other two contenders arguably have the sexier graphics, but I now have the general kind of gameplay I wanted, and no longer look over at Elite: Dangerous or Star Citizen expectantly, hoping that they’ll step up sooner than later.

E:D is off my console’s drive now until such time as they possibly add in a more interactive universe, and SC can continue to be “in development” for as long as it has to be. I have a game to play now.

If you’re going to do a true selfie, then it needs to look like a selfie taken by a handheld device. This works pretty well in modern games like Secret World Legends. Then you just need a good shot of your character with some dramatic, funny or unlikely background.
