Warframe outlines melee revamp, channeling changes, and Nyx and Vauban tweaks

Warframe players who’ve been following the game’s development meta already knew that melee was due for a rework, but Digital Extremes brought some solid proof to the weekend livestream to show off, though the devs admit it’s “only halfway polished.”

“Like with the Secondary and Primary weapons earlier this year, all Melee weapons will be given a balance pass,” the dev recap of the stream explains. “The delay is a result of our plans to rework the melee system, which needs to be done first! Stance combos have been unified to require less memorization across all mods. Once you get a feel for the system, you should be able to apply it consistently across all weapons. [The] Channelling button has been replaced with a heavy attack button now, which is charged using the combo counter. Energy will no longer be consumed by channeling! The changes will change up the melee Meta, but it also comes with a radical buff to range and damage. Your expected ground and spin attacks are still executable – worry not!”

It sounds as if channeling in general (and everything associated with it) is getting a complete rework; moreover, Gas City is getting a visual and lore update, dual wielding will become more expansive, Nyx and Vauban are getting some buffs, and wall-hopping is being looked at. Plenty more is apparently coming this week – and don’t forget about the comic series!

Looking like i couldn’t have picked a better time to get back into Warframe.

Logged in after a long time away, and the game is nigh on to incomprehensible. Can’t go places I’d unlocked, potatoes on equipment vanished, the usual ‘we explain nothing’, etc.

It’s still attractive though. ;( Guess I’ll wait for the new version to hit and try again then. At least everyone else will have a changed experience as well.

hope it all works out smoothly but I’d just like to point out how great it is they listen to the community and are willing to reiterate on complete systems completely if they think it needs it.

like the melee system isn’t terrible as is, it’s alright but they’re willing to put all of this effort in until they get it just right.

but in the future you’ll be able to dual-wield any single-handed secondary weapon and melee weapon for some added flair

YES please! :P

For those new to the game, Stalker’s Acolytes turn up once evey 6 months or so, can be tough fights, and drop some very good mods – such as Meme-ing Strike, though some people are worried about how the Melee 3.0 changes might impact that.

I hope they stick around for a while, because the once-every-few-months Razorback event has also just started on PC and I really want the event drops from that as well!

Feeling cautiously positive about the Melee 3.0 stuff they’ve shown so far, I like the ideas of only needing to know one set of combo sequences (with no daft pauses in) for all weapons, easy gap closer attacks for all weapons, and directional ground slams. I might even use channelling once the energy cost is removed! Though these days most of my melee attacks are either whip against low level hordes or following up Inaros’ pocket sand with a Covert Lethality modded dagger :)

Looking forward to it; I enjoy patches which shake things up significantly. (as long as it doesn’t literally break everything that is)

I think Warframe would have been much more popular if the frames weren’t so ugly.

I think the ‘frames look great!

No art style will please everybody – for example, I’m not a fan of games with an “Eastern” or anime art style – but I think part of Warframe’s popularity is because it has a distinctive and memorable style rather than something generic and forgettable.

On the one hand, the melee rework is looking pretty cool. On the other, however, is the fact that 99% of the time you are swamped by hordes of shitlings that you need to AoE clear and a complex cinematic 1v1 fight with flips and spins and whatnot isn’t going to cut it.

An epic multi-phase brawl with the boss of Uranus, Tyl Regor? Hell yes. An epic multi-phase brawl with crawler #56837475 as eleventy billion of its friends are pouring in through every door, air vent, broken window etc? Not so much.

If this isn’t addressed, the polearms, whips and heavy blades that can AoE cleave will still be the go-to meta.

Yup, sound like they are improving on exactly the weak parts. Channeling never really clicked, and the combos are overly complex for the pace of the game.
It’s impossible to tell how a new system will feel before hands on, but any change is proably an improvement..besides Warframe is a game in constant change, and thats why we love the game.

I know everybody’s reserving judgment until we see the melee mod changes, but personally I really appreciate the spirit of this rework so far. Making the combo attacks based on directional input rather than pause/hold attacks is a much better fit for the pace of the game.
