Blizzard teases ‘multiple Diablo projects in the works,’ with reveals ‘later this year’

It’s not exactly a secret that Blizzard has been working on something Diablo-related for a while as we’ve been tracking the company as it posts job openings for new Diablo games and fended off rumors about D3 mobile and Switch ports. That D2 remaster is still floating in my memory too. But confirmation is good, and we’ve got some of that on tap.

“We’d also like to let you know that the forges here at Blizzard are burning hot, and we have multiple Diablo projects in the works,” Blizzard Community Manager Brandy Camel teased in a brief video the studio posted today on Twitter. “Some of them are going to take longer than others, but we may have some things to show you later this year.”

So, BlizzCon is finally going to bring the Diablo love! Got any speculation?

You know what I want?

Different ARPG flavor.

Diablo Souls. Complete with class and weapon mechanics that would be the entire chief conceit of another game for each character type, enough gameplay styles ON LAUNCH to make several builds per class worthy (and a crafting system which allows one to build with intent), hunting massive daemons or slewing through huge groups of little ones with friends, a main storyline which is functional and well-written but which leaves a lot to discover and explore off the beaten path.

I’d like a storyline which is all Good Vs. Evil propaganda and a much greyer, darker place outside of the spotlight which can be delved into at your own pace, on your own time.

Being led through things by the nose fucking sucks.

‘Difficulty’ by dint of ever-increasing damage and ever-perfecting builds running up against ever-ramping enemy numbers to the tune of damage numbers in the trillions fucking suck.

Lots of experimental possibility, with plenty of new beasts, new experiences, and slews of modular movesets both for players and for bosses, roaming bosses, event creatures, etc. waiting in the wings.

Use the cutting-room floor as a place for a purpose-built team to iterate on ideas that weren’t quite there yet, like PoE seems to be doing with their crazy-ass new mechanics every major content patch, but make a game that feels fundamentally Blizzard without making a Diablo 2 update or Diablo 3 2.

If they could pull it off making a rpg like Dragon Age or Mass Effect with good story and amazing companion interactions would make people sit up and take notice. Especially if they switched from top down approach to something like DA or ME. Have it be a single player game with some expansions and then towards the end of it launch D4 with some sort of ability to crossover some things either via cosmetics or something similar.

I hate to say it, but no matter how much one wants a new Diablo game that actually is an RPG, there’s no sign of that happening. D3 is plenty of sign that RPGs just aren’t a Blizzard thing.

Given the direction Blizzard is going in, I think the short-term project, if we can surmise such from a 20-second announcement, will be a PvP arena game, specifically developed for esports. I think the lack of support for D3 in the past 3-4 years as Blizzard revved up their esports engine is enough of an indicator that D3 did not fit in Blizzard’s future plans specifically because it could not support any approach to Esports. So, it got pushed to the back burner while those games that were Esports material got the big push.

Now that Hearthstone, HoTS and OW are all well on their way, Blizzard has time to turn to its Most Favored Child. So, Esports in the near future for the Diablo IP.

For the longer term project, I’m going with the door marked “MMO”. There are no Western AAA MMOs (that we know of) out there. (Intentionally disregarding The New World, because who knows?) Yes, Project Titan gave Blizzard a real set back, but WoW is clearly showing its age. And Titan was cancelled 4 years ago. Now is the perfect time to tee up a new MMO with a known and beloved IP in a world everyone wants to visit.

My guess is no bathroom anti-chamber for Diablo at BlizzCon 2018.

Interesting to read your perspective. My only thoughts on a Diablo arena type game is that all of the main Diablo heroes are already featured in HOTS.
I just have to wonder if an arena game under the Diablo franchise would be redundant?

D3 does not generate any revenue after the player buy the game, so they have to figure out how they’ll do that, it’s no wonder they are not developing anything for D3, maintaining the game and fixing bugs and managing season; i don’t think the game price cover all these costs.

Adding new content needs some kind of a gmae shop, now Blizzard can add that and ignore the angry mob … they just need to figure out the business model.

Anyway, i’m happy to hear any news about Diablo, waiting for Blizzcon 2018.

Diablo news are worthy of the term teaser in more ways than one.

As usual nothing relevant will happen, when it comes to Diablo talking about the game is considered new content.

But maybe i’m wrong and they are actually doing something, like adding a Diablo character to HS.

Meh, still don’t have any confidence in their current teams to build a proper ARPG. As long as they announce a proper D2 remaster (not remake, not re-imagining) I’ll be happy.

Agreed.

D3 has shown me how much Blizzard doesn’t understand the IP or genre. So unless they bring David Brevik, the Shaefer brothers, and some others from Condor/Blizzard North back to make a proper sequel to Diablo, the only thing that would interest me is a D2 remaster.

I think they have a fairly good grasp on it now, but are faced with the fact that they have been working with a completed product that was originally created by another team with a completely different mindset and goals for what the game was supposed to be. They have made tweaks and tons of changes, but a lot of what they need to do, just isnt something you do to a product thats been released and out for so long.

D3 currently has only a couple big flaws left that make it fall behind its competition:

1. The short, ridiculous, and uninspiring story
– This is something that can be easily improved upon in D4. They just need to put forth the effort to do so.

2. The lack of any real, new, game mechanic content on a regular release schedule.
– Take a look at path of exile, where every season they add some new content that drastically changes or adds new mechanics to the game. Blizzard could have done this, but it was probably a management decision rather than a “the devs just dont know how to do it well”. The last real “new” changes we saw was when they added Rifts to the game. After that, its just been quality of life improvements, and tweaks to balance. None of which are signs of them not knowing how to do something, but rather signs that the game is mostly im maintenance mode.

Lets not forget that when D3 was released, Blizzard straight out said they werent going to operate it like an mmorpg, which meant no regular content updates. That was a huge mistake IMO. Path Of Exile has shown that its success has come exactly FROM doing that. Keeping the game updated with new things, and frequently at that.

Both of those things above can be traced back to the original team that created D3, and their mindset for the game. If Blizzard was going to fix those things, they might as well make a completely new game at this point… which it seems they might be doing.

Just because you can only renovate an old car so much, doesnt mean that you couldnt design an even better car from the ground up. I believe this is the current situation the existing Diablo team finds themself in.

3. Lack of build variety, since your build is pretty much determined by the 2-3 gear sets per class.

You do bring up some good points, but Blizzard made D3 the game they wanted it to be. Granted, there is a lot of “in hindsight” here that they may not have thought about, or just flat out ignored. And you are correct, it will take a completely new game to fix D3, with a completely different team at the helm. And hopefully whatever team they get sits down and plays at least a hundred hours or more of each Diablo 2, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, and the Torchlight games so that they can understand what makes a good ARPG.

Does D3 have a huge assortment of playable builds?

Nope

Do I feel that makes it a bad game or an ARPG that just doesnt “get it”?

Nope.

Would having more builds make D3 even more fun?

Absolutely

An ARPG isnt required to have a ton of builds to be good or fun. It CAN be a nice feature of an ARPG, but its not the main core of what makes and ARPG and ARPG

but Blizzard made D3 the game they wanted it to be.

You missed some of my point.

Originally, under a different design team, blizzard made the diablo they wanted to make. This was D3 at release. That team, failed. The game they wanted to make, was HUGELY flawed, and not what players wanted.

Since then, a huge portion of the design team has left or been replaced, including the main guy leading the project. Since that time, the other developers have tried to bend and shape the mess that was D3, into something that was semi decent.

And they succeeded.

Sometimes though, you need a fresh slab of stone to carve, rather than trying to carve away imperfections from an already finished statue.

Good summation

To be fair, Blizzard DID know how to. Just it was what was known as the “Blizzard North” studio that knew about ARPGs–and they quit for a multitude of reasons and went their separate ways, and with them the games they were producing were canceled or trash–including a proper Diablo 3, which was dumped entirely and ignored.

The D3 we got was done by the MMO branch essentially. Which was why it was… so poorly not an ARPG.

But! Hey, we got Torchlight 1 and 2 out of that, and both games are pretty fine and scratch the Diablo itch I have.

I’m going to start using a standard model for these kind of threads:

What i hope for:
What i expect:
What happens:

Since we don’t have anything released, i’ll contain myself to the former two.

What i hope for: A Diablo MMO, Diablo 4 or a new xpac that improves on the game core issues. A Diablo MMO would be actually better than WoW, specifically if you allow for huge customization of your class.

What i expect: Underwhelming or ok-ish patches with minute changes. A Mobile port of D3, or D2. A new xpac that doesn’t solve any of the core issues of the game.

Waiting to report back.

Bwahahahaha!

… Don’t get ne wrong: it would be awesome, but there is no way Activision is willing to put actual effort into any of their games.

Its a good thing that Activision has never put any effort into any of Blizzard’s games then.

Overwatch was a happy accident, but even that was spawned by mismanagement, incompetence, and corperate meddling.

… Every other title Blizzard has produced since being take over by Activision has been underwhelming (at best) or a flat out flop.

Also, the excuse “but Blizzard isnt Activision!” Is stupid and lame: they are owned by Activision and the complete train wreck that the Destiny franchise has turned into, is a prime example of how much free will Activision heaps on its subsidiarity developers. What little independence Blizzard may actually have is exclusively due to WoW being their prized cash cow & Activision is terrified at the thought of making any kind of change to that game what so ever.

However that “Liberty” Blizzard “enjoys” is exclusive to WoW’s development alone and everything else gets the fiddle fuck / cash grab treatment.

Enjoying that episode 3 of Starcraft II much?

Boy It is a good thing that D3 was such a great gane that the director didn’t have to resign his position and take a diffrent roll with the company because he couldn’t handle it & that RMT marketplace idea sure was a great idea that definitely contributed to the games lasting reputation as a quality title.

No, I don’t really care to … And I don’t need to, to know they are a shit company that is run by megalomaniacs who view customers as widgets to be manipulated to produce revenue.

Here is a simple fact: whatever it is they are working on is going to be a pile of shit with a flashy trailer, marketing will get a bigger budget than development, and it will be stuffed full of RMT gambling mechanics.

But you know what: why don’t you boom mark this comment and when the gane comes out you can pull it up and rub it in my face how I was wrong.

… Or not.
