The Expanse started life as a failed MMO pitch

Oh, that works.

It’s always funny when you see the routes that various franchises take. The Expanse started life as a series of books, which became a television series, and now it’s getting adapted into a tabletop game. But what would eventually become the books came from tabletop roleplaying in a homebrew system. That seems to make things a nice circle… until you consider that the tabletop game was being adapted from a failed MMO pitch some 15 years ago.

According to creator Ty Franck the setting was originally developed as a pitch for a Chinese company looking to put together an MMO. The pitch failed chiefly because the company didn’t realize that MMOs were easily $100 million projects, but Franck kept working on the setting. Of course, at this point the series seems to have done quite well for itself… but if it ever does adapt into an MMO, then we’ll have gone full circle.

I’d check out an Expanse MMO. I’m afraid it might end up as a PvP gankfest though.

At this rate we’ll have an Expanse MMO soon enough…and will probably release before Star Citizen.

Fun fact: Secret World Producer Rhys Yorke was an artist for the Expanse for a bit.

I think the vibe for scifi shows is completely different than the vibe for games, the shows can bypass that usual crowd that wants everything to be exactly the same (CSI: Space Division) games can’t, we badly need a Netflix in gaming.

Reading the responses here I’m going in, The Expanse binge commencing in 5…4…3.. wait gotta stock up on grub and grog first. Can’t wait and can’t believe i missed this, playing too much.

Side note question. When peeps always say how great BSG is, what are we talking about here, the older show or the newer show, or all of it? I want to watch this as well.

I think when people say BSG they mean the new one and when they mean the old one they say Galactica.

There was a flame war raging for years on imdb about this show, i personally don’t want to see a frame by frame reenactment of the old show, i can still watch the old show, not sure why i would want to see new actors doing the exact same thing.

Thanks for the clarification, watched neither going with the new one.

The old show is fun, campy, but it’s a far cry from the quality of the drama in the new one. I would say watch a few YouTube videos to get a feel for the old one, and then just start with the new one. They’re not really connected — the new one is for all intents and purposes self-contained.

OK, i’m going with the new one BSG, maybe check the older series one day too. Watched the first episode of The Expanse last night, hooked! BSG after.

The newer show for BSG, try and watch the 2 part miniseries before diving into the main deal.

OK, didn’t know about a mini series I’ll get that too. Uggg sci-fi overload all of a sudden, Warframe addict, now going on a major binge, might need help after this lol /jk

It’s worth watching the first few episode of the original and the “Greetings from Earth” episodes (Space Nazis).

If someone made a version in which they edited out the kid and his robot dog I might watch the whole thing again.

I do think having a feel for the first will help you get more enjoyment out of the next. I do love the contrast and touch points the two have.

I don’t really like this show. The first season had a space battle with about 0 tension in it. Meanwhile, I watch BSG and I’m holding my breath whenever they launch Vipers. And I’ve seen that show about 5 times. The Expanse needs a new editor or something.

Seeing if Joe got to meet Julie kept me watching a little bit, though.

I recently binge watched the TV series, and omg, it’s amazing. I might even call it the best sci-fi show or movie that I ever saw.

Of course, undoubtedly some people will go “but the books are better”, but that’s the case with every book adaptation ever. Books can simply tell more story in the end.

I absolutely loved the first season because it stayed with the book but the subsequent seasons started moving characters and things around which always really bugs me :) Still, a great show but I thought Battlestar Galactica was better.

If a show slavishly follows ‘the book’, it’s doing something wrong. Different medium, different requirements.

Late reply, but after this article I went and tried Battlestar Galactica (the 2003 version, I only knew about the old one) and while the show is great, I can’t stand Gaius Baltar. The character, the actor, the woman in his head who somehow physically manifests but only to him… everything. Like, I have to skip scenes because I hate it. So I’ll probably stop watching. Seems like a quality show otherwise, though.

One of the best “light” science fiction book series in decades, and hands-down the best “hard” science fiction TV series (mayyyybe only eclipsed by the first three seasons of Battlestar Galactica). I was flabbergasted when SyFy canned it, and overjoyed when Amazon picked it back up. The characters are just..they’re just amazing. Amos and Avasarala alone…just so good.

I backed the tabletop RPG in the first hour of the Kickstarter. I am all-in with this IP.

I quite enjoyed what I saw on Netflix and I would be all for any mmo that has a science fiction setting. So can someone step in and complete that circle please :-)
