Rumor: The next Final Fantasy XIV expansion is named Shadowbringers

March out of the light.
Take this with a grain of salt, but it does appear that we’ve uncovered the title of the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion. A trademark filing bot uncovered a new Square-Enix filing for “Shadowbringers,” at around the same interval as similar filings before the reveals of Heavensward and Stormblood (just a couple of months until the Fan Festival). That’s already pretty reliable, but there’s more to it than that.

For one thing, it follows the same naming schematic as the previous expansions (two-word compound word), and there have been several hints in fiction and in the anniversary event about the color violet, darkness, and an oncoming night. All of that would fit well with the name we’ve seen, but it remains just a rumor until the Fan Festival. Still… if it is the name, don’t be surprised.

I definitely like the title, but I’m not sure how I feel about a second expansion with the exact same abbreviation as the current one. I guess it could be SHB instead of SB for clarity’s sake. Either way, exciting!

Still wishing for an Imperial campaign where you get to be the assholes for once.

I cant take this game seriously, unless blue mages are added playable class.

Expect blue mages sometimes after they fix the cross-class abilities.

Makes me think that where Stormblood was largely hopeful and a string of victories for Eorzia, this is going to take a darker edge and possibly have more setbacks.

Exciting. I wonder if the Shadowbringers will try to bring darkness to the land. I wonder if you will be tasked with saving it.

Nah, somebody else can do it.

Would love to see the return of the Warriors of Darkness. Their part of the story was, sadly, way too short.

Definitely think “Shadowbringers” refers to our characters in some way and relates to the Warriors of Darkness questline where they went back to fight a Light-void world. They kind of left what happened to both them and Minfilia open.

Hoping they also use this as an opportunity to connect things to the Iroha storyline where she mentions meeting us at some point in her world. That is, another connection to Vana’diel (as she, Shantotto and Tenzen all make appearances in XIV and Iroha and Shantotto are both confirmed to be from Vana’diel and capable of dimensional / between world travel).

That is, in FFXI Rhapsodies storyline the Warrior of Light becomes the

God of Light and has to sacrifice his divinity to banish the darkness. The main character from XI is Iroha’s master and she frequently makes reference to how the XIV Warrior of Light reminds her of him — and why she almost instantly had a feeling of trust for us.
Which, if the universes are connected to allow travel to and fro, may mean that realm eventually turned into a Light Void (or they have an opening to say such in the story).

If it was with regards to the Ascians, then the title would be more akin to naming the expansion Chaosbringers or something like that.

So you’re saying that there’s a deep connection between XI & XIV?

I wouldn’t say there’s a confirmed deep connection. Though there are several connecting points regarding characters.

Shantotto
Iroha
Tenzen

…For example all visited Eorzea and the first two in particular were confirmed to be from Vana’diel. Iroha visited us as one of the destinations she went to during the XI Rhapsodies storylines when FFXIV had their own Rhapsodies of the Maiden story limited time event some years back (They even showed memories of the Shadowlord from FFXI during the event — so the lore of Vana’diel is canon and known in Eorzea by a select few). She mentions that she will one day meet us again, or that we’ll see her in her original world one of these days (which is Vana’diel).

The ultimate fate of Vana’diel is unknown and it’s pure conjecture based on certifiable evidence that it will ever officially be connected aside from characters in XI being able to travel to Eorzean through unusual means. I’m just speculating that it would be a great in to say that the Warriors of Darkness — who were adventurers and warriors of light in their world — that banished the darkness from their world to the point the light overtook it completely could be from Vana’diel. Either way, a major character from our cast left to go to the Warrior of Darkness’ world to help save it from the light and, by association, bring Shadows to it.

I also seem to remember there being a story in Vana’diel about five warriors of darkness or whatever that you can eventually recruit to be Trusts.

Though there is also the point where the territory of the Empire is kind of in a violet shade during the cinematic of Stormblood. But Stormblood itself proved that they aren’t afraid to have you go to two different places for the story.

In the end, there is also already set lore with FFXIV with how many worlds and reflections there are. The fact that Vana’diel exists and is known by a few in Eorzea might imply that it is one of those that became a light void.
