One Shots: Gung-ho Gandalf

It’s one thing to get a stern talking-to, even when you deserve it. It’s another thing when that lecture comes from a gruff angel-wizard immortal who is sick and tired of your nonsense. So just be glad that you’re not King Theoden in Lord of the Rings Online at this particular moment!

Reader James sent in this particular royal epiphany: “My Runekeeper was working his way through Edoras and by luck happened to be there when Gandalf and company confronted Grima and helped Theoden.”

Now Theoden has retina damage. Way to go, gung-ho Gandalf.

I asked for explosions in last week’s screenshot challenge, I got thoughtful moments of (dis)quiet. I need to stop demanding the impossible from you all! It shows that the community really does know best.

“No visible explosions in this shot,” said Ryuen, “but those who played War Within in Warframe without spoilers will understand. Next up, work my way to the Sacrifice.”

The imminent demise of WildStar seems to have brought out many fond memories — and screencaps — of this soon-to-be-retired MMO.

Vunak23 brought us a vision of everyone’s favorite leggy ghost: “Not mid explosion, but you can see the imminent destruction Drusera is about to lay down on this giant robot.”

Speaking of pre-explosions…

“For the screenshot theme this week, I shuffled through my Black Desert folder and pulled up my Maehwa in the ramping-up stage of explosiveness!” said Toy Clown.

Pre-explosion — or pre-limbo? How low can you go?

“I think I want to spend the last few weeks/days of WildStar on Nexus,” said Amorey, “just to create a few more memories of a game with so many promises but destined for the sunset. I am particularly fond of WildStar — I love the art style, the music, the humor. I want to be on Nexus to see the sun setting for one last time and mourn the loss of another brilliant game.”

Have you ever been there in the final moments or days of an MMO? What’s the last (or one of the last) pictures you took of a particular title before it went dark? Let’s get macabre and share those for this week’s screenshot challenge!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

I’ve only found a few from games that are no more.
One being a shot of my monk in Vanguard and the other being the little compound I called home in Landmark (which unfortunately shows the UI).

Screenshots from games which are no more?

Here are the Invisible Woman and the Human Torch (in alt-costumes) from Gazillion’s once-glorious Marvel Heroes game.

I miss playing that game on a semi-regular basis, and I still wonder how a game and a game publisher which seemed to be doing everything right managed to eff it all up so horribly.

Absolutely, appointing a known sexual harrasser as CEO (and doubling down on keeping him) later in the company’s lifespan was the final killshot — but I still wonder about the financial crash-and-burn as well.

Marvel Heroes was considered popular and a hit — I have to wonder where all the money went. Were certain people bilking the company? I suppose we’ll never know.

When key developer David Brevik made a sudden exit sometime before Gazillion’s decline and fall, I should’ve taken this as a warning sign (as Brevik was once very much enthused about the Marvel Heroes project), but I was too busy having fun playing the game at the time to wonder too hard.

I tried to hunt down a screenshot from Landmark, where I had constructed a replica of a Frank Lloyd Wright house. But it seems to be on a flash drive I’ve stashed away somewhere. :(

Regardless, I’ve been playing the brand new and shiny Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is as far from an MMO as possible in almost every respect. I’ve been completely enthralled. One thing that has struck me is while I have expressed my disdain for the infuriating jumping puzzles in Guild Wars 2, I’ve found unlocking the mysteries for Lara Croft very engaging.

So, here’s a shot from that, instead. ;)

This reminds me I need to get around to buying and playing that game as I really enjoyed the last 2 Tomb Raider games.

Sorry Mr. Eliot, but I couldn’t disagree with your reasoning to shutdown WildStar as justifiable more… :(

Wildstar could of survived if not thrived if Carbine Studios had better management and oversight on the game. It is a very well fleshed out game with super interesting zones/areas. Great lore and a good combat system.

I feel they should have expanded on abilities for all the classes. Creating more abilities for more to choose from. Maid LFR for the more casual audience to experience the endgame stories in the game/gear. Combated bots in the PvP instances and removed or lowered the attunements to get into raiding. Created 10 mans for smaller guild groups etc.

But the game just didn’t see any love for at least a year. I went back to the game a few weeks before the announcement to close it down and the PvP gear I had from a year ago was still the top PvP gear you could acquire today. I can only imagine the same is true for the top PvE gear.

My screenshot folder’s chock full of shots from the night City of Heroes shut down. I was looking through them when I caught this one, my night widow holding a torch alongside the late and horribly missed Ascendant.

Some things are bigger than our games. If y’all will excuse me, I need a moment.

Sorry, I can’t provide screenies of last moments in a dying MMO. I mean, I could, but then I would have to explain to these demon hunters why I’m neglecting my duty as a player.

They are not to be trifled with, I assure you.

…and think of the Lyn! <3

Indeed. You know, I’ve been thinking, and if you made a Jin as small as possible, you might get a Lyn like Warden. Not quite the same thing, but with pigtails and cat ears it would be close.

I have a slot. I’m going to try it just to see how it looks.

I’ve tried that with my Jin Kung-Fu Master. While it looks good on the blackboard…in practice it all feels off. Not sure that’s more to do with Jin’s running gate that makes me feel like I am going to displace a hip if I look at it too long. :(

That Black Desert screen shot is really pretty wild. I’d love to see a short video of the whole cast from start to finish to see how it plays out.

On Gandalf confronting Theoden (btw you misspelled it as Theodin, Justin), I wish I had been able to get a slightly closer shot of it. I was running my elf runekeeper back content I had skipped in Rohan and forgot about this whole scene and started hitting the screen shot key.

Of the three or four I sent you that was the best shot, but it could have been better. Some day when I’m up for Rohan again and I’m working an alt through the area I’ll have to arrange my character in a better location to get a better set of screen shots to capture that scene.

I tend to be terrible at screen shots like this because I almost always find myself pulled into the scene and just watching the scene play out.

Here’s the four that I sent. The detail in Theoden’s throne room always amazes me when you get a good look at it.

Well, everyone pull out the CoH and SWG pictures…

I have pictures of our Supergroup talking at the end and I could probably locate the “You have been forcibly disconnected from the server” picture that everyone has.

However…

My heart was with Spectra-Lass to the end as she sat alone on my second account. As an RP character that aged through the years, she quite truly grew up in front of me from a fledgling recruit to the leader of her Supergroup.

Elizabeth Lassiter, the one and only Spectra-Lass, spent her last minutes in bed in the house that helped make her a hero. Goodnight, Princess.

Happier Note: After four years, I brought her in to Secret World (TSW and SWL) and she’s been having a lot of fun there. I use her for most of my Best of Secret World Legends streams.

She also took the picture I posted for this https://massivelyop.com/2018/04/01/one-shots-bleeding-edge-graphics/

Just some random stuff: Taking a break, stealth one-shotting the first boss, and a familiar-looking passerby who probably ran over just to call me a costumed menace.
