Final Fantasy XIV offers a UI guide and opens up its roleplaying server

It wasn’t a feature of the game’s most recent patch, but Final Fantasy XIV did something almost inconceivable yesterday: It opened up Balmung for character creation. Balmung is the game’s unofficial roleplaying server as well as being incredibly populated, stuffed to the brim with players and long kept unavailable for new characters. But now you can make characters there again! Briefly.

That’s hardly the only thing that the game has delivered to its fans, though; the official site has also provided a new comprehensive guide to its UI to help players navigate, customize, and improve their play. There’s also an ongoing sale for optional additional items, including previous anniversary event rewards. It’s not another major patch a day after the first one, but it’s still plenty to entertain and improve the player experience.

My main is on Mateus, but when I heard Balmung opened up, I transferred an unplayed character from another server over there. I just like the idea of being able to play over there if I want. I have so many friends that play over there, and I was sending tells, going GUESS WHO. haha

I’ll still main Mateus, but I’m happy that I finally got a character on Balmung.

Yeah, we have a small RP group on Mateus and no real interest in playing on what must be after all these years of being sealed off a rather inbred crowd on Balmung.

Small?

*checks the Mateus RP discord group and sees 1,500 online.*

Yeah… Mateus is pretty big. I do agree about Balmung. I made the swap during Stormblood’s launch partly due 20 min queue vs 3 hour queue, but also because the RP community is fresh on Mateus and perfect for new people whereas Balmung’s RP was very insular except those prowling for ERP.

Ah! Another article where Elliot is deliberately disingenuous in his wording of the RP situation in FFXIV.

How pathetically petty.

How so?

I never got the chance to play on Balmung, but Mateus has such a thriving RP community now, I’m not sure I would want to move to Balmung on the idea that it must have lost a good portion of its population for it to open up again. Mateus has already hit the point of not being able to make a new character unless it’s 3 a.m.

I am going to have to second what Psi said. Balmung has been closed for so long a large portion of the RP community migrated to Mateus. That server is wall to wall roleplayers and really busy. I have a character on Balmung and honestly I don’t play it anymore. Mateus just has the better community now.

Gonna third this!

My issue with Balmung is it’s just hard to break into an RP community that has been established in any game. It’s even harder to break in when the gates have been shut off to new people for years. Yes, I know you could transfer character up until about a year and half ago and before that stay up til 3am, but as far as new blood Balmung hasn’t been getting any.

Balmung isn’t bad. It’s a great server in fact! I loved my time there, but for new people I think Mateus is the better option for new RPers since becoming the second unofficial RP server.

Honestly, I’ve come to the realization that it isn’t at all hard to break into any RP community so long as you’re experienced, respectful and not shy. Though I do believe the fact that Balmung is filled to the brim with RPers might be intimidating for a lot and thus hinder integration. However, they did allow new characters to be transferred and made roughly six month ago, as well. Which instantly closed a few hours thereafter since thousands of people moved into it during that time. They said they’d prepare something in the future so that they can open it longer.

Though I’ll be honest and say that I’m exceptionally disappointed in both Mateus and Balmung in terms of community; RPing since AOL 2.0 and Ultima Online in terms of MMOs, I used to think the RP community was one of the most tight-nit, respectful and organized group of players and hobbyists around. Though since the advent of tumblr and other services, the bad apples started to show in force and people who don’t take time to research things or hypocrites began to run amok.

Now I see rumors and issues pop up all over the place; the “connected” using their connections to make other people’s lives miserable just because they don’t want to RP or RP their way… people using the mediums for attention and as a popularity contents as opposed to genuinely wanting to further the art… and so on.

Just these past couple of years I’ve seen so many people turn on each other or people with insane grudges that last forever try and turn all their friends and community against others. One lady harassed another for years for a difference of opinions on Balmung, and on Mateus there was/is a dude that has been harassing a group of girls for the past year or more since they didn’t want to E/RP or have sex with him in real life (the person in question has a family as well). The person in question even managed to finally draw them out after all this time of ignoring him and then went around and claimed they’re trying to start drama. Which then caused a ripple effect as all their friends and acquaintances harass them through whispers.

It’s especially bad since a few of them went through personal tragedy and loss when the individual turned it all on them and this only compiled onto their stress and grief. In the two cases above, I’ve personally seen the harassment through screenshots, talk between people and victims, tumblr posts, been a part of linkshells with the offenders, and other mediums (including having the offenders on my friends list or being in their group). Which is why I only mention two of the many that people claim with regards to harassment.

More appalling is that people actually fall for it an go after individuals to harass them in whispers when they weren’t involved in the first place — those that start it are just bad people, but there will always be bad people in the world we have to deal with. It’s the “dumb” people that make it worse. And the type of people that do this also try to control the narrative whenever possible and do cheap tactics to do such. Not speaking of FFXIV in this regard, but in the past I witnessed someone try to lure someone and then an argument ensued, they then went back several pages in the thread and rewrote their responses to everything to make it look like they were a step ahead and control the narrative. Or, as mentioned earlier, wear then down with a long time of harassment and then draw them out publicly and blame them for starting something.
