Neverwinter issues a ban wave in response to a well-known exploit

Doot doot?

Sometimes bugs and exploits can take a while to get yanked. Neverwinter had one on consoles that was known about back on September 12th, with all players informed at that time that the staff knew about this exploit (as did most of the community), and that it was going to be fixed while those using it would be punished. It appears that the “punish” time has arrived, and no shortage of players are pretty unhappy to now find themselves banned due to using the exploit.

The general argument against banning these players is that the Barovia hunt exploit in question was well-known and thus everyone was doing it, and it took a while to fix so it shouldn’t carry penalties. There aren’t many official explanations of why certain players appear to have been punished more severely than others, to boot. We hope that if you play on console you yourself were not using exploits because otherwise the ban train does indeed appear to be rolling in full force.

The only thing i have to the discussion to add is that the majority of the communities outrage is due to the fact the communication was horrendous. You cant defend the cheaters people need to accept responsibility for choices but you cant defend what was done here either. To break it down for people who dont play this game imagine going to log into your favorite game account and being locked out… The customer support has been abysmal but you while you wait for a response from your generated ticket you take to their forum or reddit and everytime you ask a question its removed. The idea itself is censored. PC went through this once but the vast majorty if not all console players have not. I understand they dont need to send anything as its a TOS violation and they have 30 days to respond but the sad fact is everyone is being labeled cheaters and for a fact we have discovered thats not the case. Some are innocent bystanders who didnt know or didnt exploit at all. Also player 1 and player 2 preformed the glitch the same amount one gets a 1 day slap on the wrist up to 7 days the other gets permanently banned. Have some communication for gods sakes im not saying what you did was wrong im saying how you went about it and swept questions under the rug is.

The real and long-term issue is that Cryptic published broken, exploitable content to Microsoft and PlayStation. Most news reports are missing the fact that the exploit was reported by dedicated players on PC long before it was pushed to live on PC. Which is why it was reported by fan site Uncensored. Those who knew about it knew that it was going to be a big problem if not fixed. But this is what happens when a studio doesn’t listen to its community and get their hands dirty on a daily basis, when it doesn’t get in the trenches and experience what players experience. The fact that Cryptic acted on its threat was genuinely surprising to most and seems only to further split the community into White Knights and toxics. Players need to keep it together and focus on directing responsibility to the business. Walk the walk. If something is broken, demand that it gets fixed. And while it’s broken be responsible and set an example by not exploiting known bugs. Simple, right? No, unfortunately not. The game still has a lot of exploits that have gone unfixed for ages. Some of these are unavoidable. As long as exploit talk is kept in the dark and in the depths, the game cannot progress in a healthy way. It’s why you’re seeing these dramatic changes in class balancing. It’s why the Zen Exchange backlog is over 25M, which means a player must wait approximately one month to exchange their nest egg of AD for Zen. These things keep happening because the studio does not act fast enough OR AT ALL on priority issues reported to them. You can expect improvements to the game to slow down, even, given the types of players who were banned. These players are your volunteer QA and promotion department. I’m more worried about this game’s future than I ever have been before.

Some of them seem to ‘think it was a trap’ to flush away the in-game earned cash shop currency stuff.

I’d say, if a trap, that is sounds more like one to rid the game of exploit abusers. This isn’t the first time they have gone after exploiters there, and I doubt it shall be the last.

What kind of exploit? I havent played the game so I wont recognize the environs, but Ive seen plenty of clear exploits over the years and some borderline ones. What was it about?

There was an ability for players to exploit the system to retain items they should not have been able to, and to force the boss involved to stand still and be easily killed.

It was something obvious enough to be unintended. After all, killing a boss that no longer acts at all is… well, not normal game scripting. There might be some specific times that happens with some story, but not from full health before the encounter starts. The items in question were described as being consumed, and were not due to this… which is a second huge hint that it is an exploit that should not be abused.

OK, just watched at least 4 different boo-freaking-hoo YouTube vids from guys who got the ban hammer over this. EVERY single one kept saying 90% of the player base got banned. Pretty sure you all know where that number got pulled from. Hint, it’s a dark dark place ROFL. One said he expected it. Good job at least expecting it. The others needed some cheese with the whine. :P

I really like a few things they posted in a Q&A post:

Q: There was no warning, or the warning wasn’t early enough, isn’t that unfair?

A: When you make your account you agree to ToS. An additional warning is not needed.

Q: Isn’t it their fault for not patching the exploit?

A: If you steal from your neighbor because they left their door unlocked, is it their fault?

I love this almost makes me want to install the game. You should check out the you tube videos’s from these morons that used the exploit and are crying like babies. They admit to doing it yet feel they shouldn’t be banned because it didn’t get fixed and everyone was doing it. These are why i really hate the mmo community in these games now. I can’t stand these people. I hope every single person that used this cheat gets banned and not just for a day.

Oh cry me a dang river. It’s the same rinse-and-repeat reasons and anger these people have when they get smacked with the Ban Hammer 3000 Mk II. :P

Ban away. Let the children cry, they knew the eventual consequences.
