Cryptic’s Magic: The Gathering MMO is still happening, apparently

Remember how Cryptic was making an MMO based on Wizards of the Coast’s hugely popular CCG Magic: The Gathering? No? Well, we can’t exactly blame you, considering the fact that we haven’t heard much more than a single peep about it since it was first announced over a year ago. Well, that hasn’t exactly changed — we still don’t know any more about it than we did last year — but it does look like the project is still underway, at the very least.

According to a recent article published by Gamasutra, Cryptic Studios has listed a number of job postings seeking new team members to work on the enigmatic MMO. Among the postings are listings for a character artist and an environment artist, which would seem to suggest that the game is still fairly early in development, though of course it’s impossible to know for sure. It’s not much, but at least it’s something, and hopefully MTG fans will be able to fulfill their dreams of stepping into the shoes of a proper Planeswalker in the Magic universe… eventually.

I think the degree of skepticism expressed by this title is spot on.

I figured it was going to be a lot longer down the road. They really shouldn’t have made the announcement, at least not till WotC announced the Ravnica setting book.

Can anyone explain to me how they are still hiring if NCsoft is shutting them down?

Cryptic isn’t being shut down, Carbine is.

Edit: Cryptic is owned by Perfect World, not NCSoft.

Crap, sorry. My bad. I keep mixing up those two for some reason.

Cryptic isn’t going anywhere.

Has any game ever announced itself without giving any info about the gameplay that didn’t turn out to be a gankbox?

The odds of Cryptic making a gankbox seem about zero. Doesn’t fit their history.

Probably not. I could see there being some elements of PVP, but it’ll probably be some moba inspired game mode that’s separate from the rest of the game.

I haven’t played Magic since the mid 90s, and am trying not to build any hopes before they announce things like the business model and monetisation strategies… but with 25 years of fantastic lore and art to draw from, this could be really cool.

This. There is so many worlds to pull from. The environments and combat(however they choose to do it) could be extremely deep. I’m hoping to really knock it out of the park with it. I’m cautiously excited!

If you want to know the business model look at Neverwinter and Star Trek Online.

Neverwinter’s business model is one of the things that drove me away from playing, but from what I’ve heard STO’s is ok?
