Fortnite Save the World update features Canny Valley part two, mission req changes

It seems like these days the only things we ever hear about Fortnite have to do with its immensely popular competitive Battle Royale mode, but Save the World — the game’s cooperative multiplayer component — is still a thing, too, and it’s got a new update coming that will introduce part two of the Canny Valley storyline, make some changes to the way mission requirements are handled, and add a new limited-time mission.

Part two of the Canny Valley storyline is the biggest feature on the list of upcoming content, and it’ll see players venturing back into the desert, where they’ll have to “get the gang back together” in preparation for the storyline’s conclusion in part three. Players can expect to get their hands on part two “sometime next month.”

In addition, the devs are making a small change to the way the game determines whether a group meets the requirements to undertake certain missions. As it stands, missions with home-base power requirements check the power of only the party leader, meaning that lower-level players might sometimes end up in over their heads. With the update, however, public missions will be changing to check the entire party’s power ratings to ensure that everyone is qualified for the selected mission.

If you just want to play with your lower-level friends, though, don’t worry: Private and friends-only games will retain the current system. And last, but not least, the devs are introducing a new time-limited mission. In a twist on the retrieve-the-data mission type, players must build defenses, gather data, and escape before the steadily encroaching storm consumes them.

I finally tried Battle Royale for the 1st time over the last weekend, I’ve been exclusively playing the STW mode besides that and not much lately as the friends I play with have had RL issues.

I’ll stick to STW thanks. It needs a lot more of the campaign done but BR was a mess. I prefer my zombie killing and harvesting all the things. I find it far more enjoyable. I wish these updates would come with greater regularity.

Neat, so it took them over a year to finally get 2/3rds of one of two unfinished zones done.

At this rate we’ll have the full campaign by 2020 maybe.

I wish they would start putting as many skins and such into the Save the World mode as they have in the BR mode.

BR gets all the love it seems.

Occasionally they’ll give hand-me-down skins to new Heroes. I.e. the Raven one and a number of the superhero skins.

They’re likely to make BR/STW skins cross over pretty substantially; crossover synergy of that time is invaluable and functionally un-buyable unless you happen to be Blizzard or some other company that runs multiple F2Ps that all talk to each other and provide rewards to one another, etc.

It seems like picking a class, then picking a skin, then picking some skin options is likely as a future prospect, they’re just not there yet.

I’ve been playing the hell out of StW since July and loving it; although I find it confounding that it’s taking so damn long to put out the story missions (story is conveyed 100% through voice over, and 95% of the campaign missions are “do X number of standard mission type A”). I’ll have to do a deep dive into the announcement and patch notes when this arrives, but I’m liking what I’m seeing here.

I like what they are doing in BR, but I prefer the save the world game.

Battle Royal haha just eventually feel stale. I guess the objective of stay alive is ok, but more complicated objectives like in Overwatch keep me more interested.

I get that they have so many BR players that STW is now a side project. It’s a fun game mixing tower defense and FPS. Managing inventory, collections, teams, skills, etc… Isn’t as clear as it should be. The advancement systems aren’t documented well at all. Still, there are so many more quest types they could add.

They have had huge messaging problems from the start, and still do.

Also, yeah, BR is a boring genre and I have no idea how so many people enjoy incredibly-lightly-featured shooting plus totally random item finding on a giant map. Too few rules. Too few things to interact with. I dunno. :/ It’s not my jam.

I really like STW, though. I want it to get more attention, but I also want it to be nice and polished before it launches.

They really need to just make it F2P already.

The BR season passes and a lot of the content that seems off the wall random are actually tied in with Save The World, but most people have no clue because “why the fuck should I buy that when I have the BR mode?”

Like the whole “road trip” theme from last season that made fuck all no sense and went nowhere with in the BR mode was actually an entire secondary game mode in Save The World and had you running around the new desert Biome (that they used to build Paradise Palms) on a “Road Trip” with the new portable fortress system where you could prefabricate a base and then load it in for a new type of swarm defense mission.

The road trip wasn’t Drift running around BR on a Golf Cart: it was the new mission chain in Save The World that fuck all no one knew about because “why the fuck should I buy that when I have the BR mode?”

I strongly disagree.

They need to make STW content-complete before they open the floodgates, and further they need to take some steps re: taxiing et al. This patch has some good first steps, but it’s not in a great state for a general audience, and being a buy-in beta at this moment fits it very well.

When Canny Valley and Twine Peaks are content-complete, maybe I’ll agree with this, but at the moment it’s not a good idea and will cause more harm than good. You only get your Grand Opening one time, and when they do it their game has to be fucking SHINY.
