New World shows off is alpha map in reveal of East Windsward locale

With practically everyone I know now in the alpha but hiding out behind a not particularly effective NDA, it might seem odd for New World to be pumping out screenshots, but that’s exactly what it did this past weekend.

Worth highlighting in this latest batch is a top-down view of the map in use for the alpha test specifically. The rest of the shows apparently feature a random outpost in the area known as East Windsward. Enjoy!

I’m curious about it. If it’s more lore heavy and PvE-centric, I’m in. If it’s just another map to watch people hop around awkwardly with a clumsy combat system trying to kill each other for cloth pants and flint… I’ve been there done that a few dozen times.

Comparing Star Citizen to The New World is like comparing a bass boat to an aircraft carrier. No duh SC is going to cost a lot more. It is also why SC would NEVER work under the old publishing model. The company’s want profit returns as soon as possible and will cut features until all that is left is the same old tired thing that has been delivered 100 times already.

First MOP article 11/2016 and already in alpha :).
Makes me wonder about other dev teams?

Think it through, one of the wealthiest companies in the world.

I bet your eternal soul they aren’t spending 200M on this like Star Citizen. Wealth has nothing to do with Amazon’s impeccable reputation for getting shit done.

I’d agree that they probably aren’t spending that amount of money. That said they’re still a huge powerful, financially strong company that can and did through a decent amount of resources at the project.

As they’ve done with other projects that they’ve done in the past and currently. SC is funding done wrong as we both know, that’s a shit show that’s going to have long term negative impact upon funding programs.

That wealth isn’t hitting the radar for you in regards to getting things done really just speaks of willful ignorance honestly Armsbend. You still need a good amount of cash to fund a project. Just to get the assets in, so that you can get the job done.

No one who comes on board an Amazon backed project is pondering/worrying about whether or not that there will be money for the project and that matters.

Yeah, this is quite a bit different. It’s built on Lumberyard, just like Star Citizen is now, but that engine wasn’t even around when SC began. I also found it amusing that TNW’s launcher app was called “Javelin”, which is the largest player-ownable ship in SC.

Amazon also isn’t developing a complete single-player version featuring AAA actors and mo-cap. I expect TNW to be really good, based on my experience in the alpha, but it’s still vastly (dare I say universally?) short of the ambition that SC is attempting to achieve.

And though their both in alpha, I have no doubt TNW will launch years before SC, but it should be interesting to see what comes out CitizenCon on Wednesday at the very least.

I bet they have budget guidelines and targets they cannot cross. Every real company works this way. A major reason for Amazon’s success is the fact they expect results for the projects.

If I were Bezos I’d have the ENTIRE company worrying about whether or not they’d be able to finish a given project on time and on budget. if they went unreasonably over – I’d fire them. And I bet that is exactly how it works. hence – shit getting done. Hence – why crowdsourcing is trash.

Oh, definitely. I’m betting it’s not run anywhere like CS is, which as most of us agree has become a total SNAFU. Anytime I look at CS I just shake my head in bewilderment that they aren’t reigning in and getting their act together to put it out.

Also, it pretty much follows the early access survival game formula. TNW is banking on the players to be the content; there’s little to no lore and PvE is just a preamble to PvP. It’s a lot faster getting a game out the door when all you need is a map and mobs to kill for leather and whatnot.

The more I see leaked about this online. The more it looks like a generic survival game. Not really what I was looking for. I hope they have some more tricks to pull out of their sleeves.

What I’ve seen reminds me more of an old school Darkfall type OwPvP sandbox with territory control and crafting being central focuses. I’d love to see it be more than that and the game certainly looks gorgeous, but only time will tell.

Build/Destroy. Repeat.

But they’ll make a gazillion in the 2.5 weeks it takes people to figure this out.

Oh boy. A bunch of scenic pictures and a map with zero scale.

Indeed. Looks like a single zone to me.

Do you know what “alpha” means, in dev speak, and what an alpha test might involve?

Reader

I do… or I used to. Developers keep sliding lines around though. Most betas these days are really marketing betas rather than looking for testing data. So a lot of what should really be “beta testing” either happens in alpha or just doesn’t happen at all. Amazon opened up to a crap ton of alpha testers all at the same time (from what I’ve seen/read) so it’s hard to say if they are just looking for a stress test, bug checking, alpha marketing/hype, etc.

Seriously. Aesthetically it looks pretty good for an Alpha.
As a former professional QA person I can say that most Alphas look like shit and barely function.
