Final Fantasy XIV is weathering intermittent DDOS attacks

Ah, the DDOS attack, a time-honored way of making a large number of players upset simply because someone can. Final Fantasy XIV has been suffering under intermittent attacks for the past few days, and producer/director Naoki Yoshida recently shared what news there was to share with the community about these ongoing attacks. The short version is that the team is doing everything possible to counteract these attacks, but as they’ve been both inconsistent and widespread, it can be difficult to efficiently fight them.

Players on the EU datacenter have been hit particularly hard, as the bulk of the attacks appear to have been concentrated there, but NA and JP servers have also been targeted. The goal is to avoid the game as a whole going down, and Yoshida apologizes to players who have been adversely affected by the attacks themselves or by the countermeasures for those attacks. Which isn’t the same as everything being fixed, but the effort is being made just the same.

The DDOS attacks are very likely a ‘response’ from those who had their accounts banned for RMT/hacking.

Basically October 4th was when they announced their usual wave of bot/RMT bans and this pretty much always happens around those times + lasts for upwards of a week.

It’s a highly popular game, large base of players to annoy, that can be more than enough incentive. I wouldn’t wholly discount a more professional outfit using the game as a target for practicing techniques to be honed and used later on when there more valuable reasons to take down a big site.

Interesting perspective. It does make sense. You’d think you’d hear about this kind of things affecting other MMOs more though, when XIV keeps getting rounds of this. I mean, it’s practically routine to hear about DDOS attacks on this game now.

Because they happen in tandem with whenever Squeenix does their ban waves on bots/RMT activity. At this point it’s not coincidental as it’s been happening for over a year now.

SE bans bots on an ongoing basis, publishing numbers every 10-14 days, typically. The RMT ppl quickly refill in more bots – they like the game to run smoothly, as that brings them potential customers. This goes on year-round while the recent DDOS attacks on the Chaos cluster are wholly new since Stormblood launched. There are other disruptions now and then, and are noted in the FFXIV news logs, but this is the 1st time a DDOS attack has been sustained and warranted detailed commentary by Yoshi.

Other than being a total waste of breath, i’m wondering why they’re targeting FFXIV. The game is relatively drama-free, and there isn’t really a competitive side to it that would incite such a response.

It’s very likely a response to the bot/RMT bans. This seems to happen every time those are made public with an announcement.
