MapleStory 2 formally launches this afternoon, lowers prices; here’s the launch trailer

MapleStory 2 officially rolls out of headstart and into formal launch today, although the servers are currently down until around 1 p.m. EDT for maintenance. We are expecting a launch-day update as well as preorder rewards, though patch notes haven’t been released yet; we do know it’ll raise the level cap, add the Runeblade class, and introduce the new Karkar Island zone. New servers are also on tap to launch today, and as we wrote yesterday, Nexon is working on cracking down on the gold farmers, spammers, and bots.

Last night, Nexon raised eyebrows by reducing the price of everything in its Style Coin shop by 30%. “I am very happy to share that, we are going to lower the price of all the items in the coin shop by 30%,” Nexon wrote. “Based on the new price, the most exclusive item we have in the coin shop ‘Pumpkin Witch Package’ which has five different outfit pieces, and with a full set providing special effects will be now priced at 76 coins. Because each item gives out 1 to 3 coins when you dismantle, and based on the rate we expect average of 1.65 coins per one Style Crate, meaning the most expensive package in coin shop will require approximately $125 USD. (Again, because of random %, this value can fluctuate).”

We checked out the game during last week’s headstart, both in a stream and in a dedicated hands-on piece.

And here’s a peek at some of our news on the game since its arrival in Korea and up to now!

Nexon is currently running a trailer contest:

We’ll also be streaming the game at 2 p.m. EDT today on OPTV, so stay tuned!

Update
And it’s live, complete with patch notes!

Apparently, they also stripped the cash shop bare of premium cosmetics and put those in a new style lock box, so you have to gamble to get them. They still have the starter pieces that you can select from during character creation and they added a couple of new items. But, it’s mostly just pages and pages of plain black and white outfit pieces now in their cash shop.

How effectively can one play this without spending money in the cash shop?

It’s about as good as it can get for a F2P game.
You don’t need real money for anything, be it levelling, housing, minigames, side activities… and I don’t even mean that you can grind to avoid it, the game is piss easy, you can reach max level in days of casual play, housing is literally free and comes with free infinite blocks and plenty of free furniture.

The shop is 99% cosmetics, but they are pretty expensive.
And you can buy a bunch of QoL things like afk playing your instrument or afk fishing. Technically, that will give you some XP… you could skip a good 30 minutes of levelling time, I’m sure.

The teleporters are probably the most useful thing, and there’s a $5 sub for the usual XP boost, lower AH fees and stuff. It’s probably worth more for the daily cosmetic item than a bunch of random buffs that you will never even notice.

It’s a social MMO at heart, and it can definitely be more than enjoyed for free, you can do everything for free. And do it just as well as anyone else.

Wish character customization had body shape options =( I’d like my adventurer to look more like the NPC shown at 53 seconds in the trailer.

I don’t know when I’m going to fit this game in, with both Overwatch and Minecraft in heavy rotation, but I really want to play it.

I used my lunch break to get through the starting zone with my Heavy Gunner, Daisychain. Verdict is still out on the controls. Mouse control is not very well done and keyboard controls means I spend an awful lot of time running into walls and shooting in the wrong direction. I refuse to use a gamepad on a PC, so we’ll see if this will work for me.
