Star Citizen’s CitizenCon 2018 has officially begun – here’s how to watch at home

Just as this post goes live, Star Citizen’s “CitizenCon 2948” in Austin, Texas, throws open its doors.

You might recall there was initially some fuss over whether participants at home would be able to watch the show being streamed without paying for a ticket, but the good news is that it was resolved and you can. You will, however, need to create a Star Citizen website account and log into it. CIG gave the go-ahead on restreaming, too, so you’ll probably see several of those on Twitch as well. And there’s a big ol’ viewing party on Discord today if you’re so inclined to just watch a parade of memes.

Give the schedule a peek: The opening keynote with Chris Roberts doesn’t actually kick off until 2 p.m. EDT (1 p.m. CDT time) – that’s about four hours from this post going live – so you’ve got plenty of time. And at minimum, you’ll want the capstone presentation tonight at 10 p.m. EDT, when Roberts discusses the “road to release.”

As for what to expect?

“We’re doubling the size and scope of last year’s event, taking advantage of everything our beautiful, family-friendly venue has to offer. We have two full tracks of panels and presentations, hands-on tech demos, and exclusive giveaways. We have immersive experiences that put you in the Star Citizen universe: you’ll find yourself transported to New Austin, Terra in the year 2948, at the most epic happening in the ‘verse, sponsored and hosted by controversial ship slingers, Drake Interplanetary. Reinventing their own image in the wake of PR turbulence and corporate restructuring, Drake has a chip on its shoulder and perhaps a game-changing ace up its sleeve. CitizenCon 2948 is not to be missed.”

Current backers are also looking forward to the alpha 3.3 update rolling out today to the live service for all backers, including the crucial OCS component. While Lorville and Hurston were delayed, you can catch them in one of today’s panels instead.
