The Stream Team: A look at Star Trek Online’s Age of Discovery

Massively OP’s MJ is firing up her warp drive to check out the missions. (Don’t worry, she’ll spare you the character creation… for now!) Hopefully she doesn’t have to have seen the show to catch on and complete them! Tune in live at 6:00 p.m. for this look at Age of Discovery.

Is there a youtube version? Is the video saved somewhere to view later? Thanks!

Been hearing alot of bad things about this one. Seems like CBS has taken over STO and not for the better. I loved MJ’s stream though. She called them not Klingons. Funny how that seems to be catching on with people. And it really was a reskinned tutorial that was nothing new but they called it new. Was thinking about logging in to play it but after watching the stream i changed my mind. This will be the first time that i skip new STO content.

Where have you been hearing a lot of bad things? Even people who don’t like Discovery have been saying they did a great job with the Discovery line, only that it’s far too short right now.

And the new Klingons look awesome and fierce. The old ones look ridiculous and like they’re from a goof 70s show or something. The TNG generation ones look seriously silly to me while the new ones are really nice. Is this how people felt when they changed them the first time? Were there people that liked the new design and others saying “Those aren’t Klingons!”?

I love the look of the Discovery Klingons. Truly savage and ferocious looking. Powerful and intimidating. Unlike the goofball looking dudes with rubber appliances on their foreheads and 80s hair band hair of the previous generation.

It was good but it’s ridiculously short. It’s not so much an expansion as what feels like 5 or 6 chained missions. Once you’re done with that (no later than level 10) then who knows when you’ll see it again. I’m 30-ish now and it’s just the same old boring STO ever since. I’m going to try and stick it out for a bit longer but I’m not overly hopeful.

As many have said in other threads, while the ‘new’ AoD tutorial is at the start just a reskin on the existing 25th Century Fed tutorial, once you get past the encounter that effectively gives you starship command; that’s when it changes, and overall, I think it works better from a story perspective than the Borg you encounter in the 25th century tutorial; and the characters and ships you meet and arc it sets up are more interesting.

I’ve stopped leveling my AoD character at level 20 (because hey you get a lot of stuff for new characters at 20 from your Delta, Temporal, and Gamma recruit rewards IF you were fortunate enough to be playing and make such a character when those options were available) until we see more of what will ultimately be to AoD arc in full.

I AM disappointed they didn’t take the time to hook up the 2256 interiors they made for the Walker and Crossfield ships (that you see in the tutorial and one full mission you get so far) and we just get the Walker/Crossfield bridge on the AoD ships. )At least they did that for TOS fans with “Agents of Yesterday” and gave us two full interiors to choose from there. Given how they’ve spoken of interiors in general, I don’t think they’ll be ultimately doing that for A0D regardless.

I really enjoy the Discovery line, I’m just sad that it’s so short. I’d pay for a whole new expansion based on it, though I know that’s not the way STO does things.

Overall it was done very well for what is there, though I do wish we could use any race we wanted in it.

Caitians were a very early Federation race in the Fed since at least 2251 – why couldn’t they have been a choice in these earlier timeline lines? Besides the fact that this universe is its own universe, they can shift stuff around so that it happens earlier or later or do whatever. I think it would have been far better to allow people to pick more races to enjoy with both of these earlier timeline things (but at least they have general “Alien” in the Discovery one).

I enjoyed the Discovery arc so far. I wish it had been more than just the tutorial re-done. I also wish they had done a Discovery Klingon version arc too especially now they have all the relevant assets.

However that said, they have said they will be expanding the Discovery arc as things progress, so we have that to look forward too.

I also really like the Discovery era warp sound (even if it has borked all other warp sounds atm heh) and beam up visuals.

The transporter and warp effects are pretty cool. And I like the explanation that Cryptic came up with for why they sound/look so different. It’s an Eaves warp drive! Then they went back to the Cochrane style after the war.

I nearly fell out of my chair when Tilly made the comment about Finnegan finally graduating! :)
