One Shots: Filtered to perfection

19

I don’t usually spend a lot of time running pictures through filters, but it’s pretty cool when I see someone doing this that knows what they’re doing.

Spider has it covered with a game that hasn’t shown up in this column so far, probably because it has yet to release: “Disclaimer: not a leak! I cut up, copied, and pasted together parts of officially released New World screenshots and applied a generous dose of filter after filter after filter for my new desktop background. Thought you might get a kick out of it. Been bored, waiting for a new game, making Frankenstein screenshots to amuse myself.”

There are worse ways of spending your time!

Last week’s screenshot challenge was to show areas in MMOs that are Halloween “all year round.” Reader John thinks that RIFT fits the bill here, especially with zones like Gloamwood. Would you agree?

KingCrazy took a joyride in Destiny 2: “Here we see my ship, the Queen of Hearts, as I assemble with my ad-hoc fireteam to take on a formidable group of opponents in an underground contest we call Gambit.

“On and on they soared, the rounds of our arms! The Vex fell as if the full might of the Tower had been brought to bear against them. Better Devils sung in my hands. A portal opened, and I grabbed the heavy ammo needed for my trusty grenade launcher before jumping right in. There they were, our opponents who had performed so well, and they knew an intruder was in their midst. My ghost showed me the number of motes each of them held, and I headed for the chart leader, whose fifteen motes could effectively seal our destiny should he manage to bank them. Oh! How sweet the melody of explosive death! His teammates wept, and another one fell to my assault.”

“Places that seem Hallowe’en spooky all the time?” asked Mysecretid. “My thoughts immediately went to the planet Nathema in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Nathema is introduced as a desolate, windswept ruin of a world, now hosting only one structure — an abandoned ‘sanitarium’ complex that was always more torture chamber than medical refuge. This was the place the Sith Emperor Valkorian sent his Force-powerful, but dangerous daughter, Vaylin, to be mentally ‘conditioned’ as a child.

“The in-game evidence suggests that Vaylin was always a broken person, even as a child — but nothing on the horrific world of Nathema could’ve ever been about repairing her damage. I took my Sith-blooded Jedi Guardian back to Nathema for these screenshots. A house of horrors, indeed.”

Rafael has a better idea for a spooky tour: “Halloween all year? Easy peasy. The Highland Necropolis in Blade and Soul. Unfortunately, the Dark Realm’s forces poured into this once beautiful and lush area after a prince tried to make himself emperor. Oh, it is a long story complete with fratricide and betrayal. The net-net, demons and the undead have a place to live in the earthly realm. Oddly enough, this dark hoard does seem to enjoy the holidays.”

Neverwinter’s recent theme park ride-like quest made me think of other MMOs that have, at various times, given us the equivalent of an amusement park thrill or dark ride. Do you have any of these? Share for this week’s screenshot challenge!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Woot! Thanks for the shout out Syp. I do love that cap.

So, I haven’t run into anything MMO that resembles a ride in the county fair lately. But, I have run into amusement park type things.

Take the Wheel of Fortune for example. The zones that launched BnS all have them. They are usually next to a World Boss. So, what you do is take part in killing the WB, bring back the tokens you pick up for doing it, then use the tokens as currency to spin the wheel.

In the old days, you had to do this in order to get gear, and yes there was a big RNG element. But NCsoft learned its lesson. Now the Wheel of Fortune grand prizes are outfits; unique outfits you can’t get anywhere else.

So step right up. Step right up! Don’t be shy. Let the wheel reward your fortune! All you have to do is kill that big ugly over there. Sure you might die, but look at this sweet outfit you just might win!

Oh, and don’t ask me about the happy golden pigs on the side of the wheel. I have no idea what the hell that is all about.

The resulting outfit?

It’s a little breezy.

That’s funny, I see the name New World and I hear the word “gankbox” in my head.

Mordor is still dark and depressing but they tuned the area difficulty enough for me to do a bit of questing. I am trying my best but it is very slow and sometime frustrating , however I managed to get almost to lev 112. New hobbit avatar models are ok – they did try to revamp the Shire a bit by adding lots of shrubs, flowers, and other things…the result is not great at the moment and they already said they are working on tuning the new greenery down in the next hotfix.

I got a new mount in Maplestory 2.
Yes, it’s a body pillow with some bloke named Blake on it.
And yes, I run faster than my car when I hold it.
Why?
Who knows.

Lol! It is a Waifu pillow. I thought the term was reserved to reference female toons you would like to be your wife, but it isn’t limited by gender. Or… at least the internet says so, and the internet is always right. ;)

What Does Waifu Mean?

Sometimes mmo content doesn’t click with you and sometimes it can ruin a game or a character for you if you have a bad time. Such was my experience in Lord of the Ring Online with Mordor.

I recently tried to go back on my main hobbit hunter and I just couldn’t get going. So I was faced with the sad and somewhat depressing situation of setting aside what has been my main for the last nine years of lotro playing.

While I don’t play lotro all the time me and this little bunch of hobbit pixels have spent many hundred of hours together exploring middle earth and I feel like I am leaving a friend behind.

The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone.
Let others follow, if they can!
Let them a journey new begin.
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Sleep well little one you deserve your rest while others will continue to travel down that road /sigh

What is so bad about Mordor?

I see peiple bitching about it all the time, but I have never understood what was so bad (I also have never played LOTRO).

For me, there were two things.

1, the more minor, the difficulty ramps up sharply compared to previous content. This is more or less OK as you get more Light of Earendil and get used to the difficulty, but was off-putting at first.

2, as usual, SSG has done a great job making Mordor look like it’s described in the books, which means it’s dark, depressing and dangerous. That can be a real drain to play in for long periods.

It seems a silly thing to complain about but sometimes you can nail the atmosphere of a place too well. To the point that you can have a very trying time playing through those areas and that has been the case for me personally with Mordor.

Coupled with the fact that I am still a bit peeved about the way SSG handled the launch of this content. Which has further soured my feelings about the area. Yes I know I shouldn’t be its just a game and all that but I never claimed to be perfect.

I can only hope that I can get over myself by the time my Beorning hits that area so that I can push myself through it. That way I can get to see the new non Mordor areas that I understand are really nice to level in.

Interesting. I went through a very similar thing not to long ago.

SWTOR a game I played for the better part of 5 years became stale in the same manner. Command XP was the cause. I was very unhappy with the introduction of this fabricated grind that did not exist before. I can expound much on the reasons, but what hurts is a Jedi Shadow I love is sidelined for good or so it seems.

I tried to go back and play the plucky little lass, but no, the fun is gone. And tanking on a Jedi Shadow was so much fun.

The gnome run was a great time…the after-party in Orgrimmar, not so much.

“Day 63 after the Legion’s fall, it’s a peculiar phenomenon, every year we witness a swarm of gnomes killing themselves trying to get into the throne room of our warchief, the warchief is and i quote “not amused” by the new wave of pink gnomes … why pink? and why gnomes? some think it is some kind of death cultist? all we know that we are not prepared for these invasions, and we never stopped to ask the gnomes about why they are here …. do they want to join the horde?!

Dear diary, i shudder at the thought of pink gnomes every where in Orgrimmar, we already have goblins ruining everything”

“So speaking of which…why didn’t you participate in this event, Uta?”

To be frank and frances, I find the event a bit gimmicky. And don’t want my reputation of my species devalued over a YouTube spectacle.

But if serves the interest of the readers’ curiosity, I did participate in a lv 1 Gnome collective take down of Hogger back around in TBC. Though that was more of a spontaneous thing that was put out by a sister RP server at the time. I am pretty sure player initiated events like that eventually lead to this Blizz instigated event. :)

Todays screen shot is from a game called RL Offline: I snapped this at the start of a random quest I picked up titled “I need Coffee & want a Waffle” but as soon as I walked into the field, a Snow Elemental attacked & my equipment loadout isn’t set up right to deal with the frost attack it used to stun my mount.
