The Daily Grind: What’s the worst Halloween event in the MMOverse?

No real salt from me today: I personally loved Star Wars Galaxies’ Halloweeny Galactic Moon Festival, as ridiculous as it was, and as I mentioned on the podcast, I’m super grateful to the player devs who brought it back (and enhanced the heck out of it) this year in the Legends emulator. It’s a treat just to see it alive again.

That said? “Ridiculous” is an understatement. One of the rewards SOE put in back in the day was a Stinky the Hutt backpack, which I promptly earned and then put on my husband’s Ithorian Jedi to wear for all eternity because hello, baby Hutt in a backpack.

Y’all who thought merely adding Jedi to SWG was a dealbreaker hadn’t seen anything yet, is what I’m saying.

I definitely don’t think SWG’s was the worst Halloween, especially given some of the cool themed rewards, but it’s certainly pretty silly. What would you say is the worst Halloween event in the MMOverse?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

WoW. It wasn’t the worst when it came out. It’s now the worst because it’s unchanged and unrewarding.

I used to resub for some holidays in WoW then they stopped giving us some catch up gear and didnt add anything fun.

Holidays in general in wow are much like the game in its current state, used to be fun now just tedious or boring

ESO. The entire event is, like, “For next two weeks, all the boss-class enemies will drop Halloween lootbags full of worthless junk”. No quests, no carnival games or scavenger hunts or open world encounters or costumes. Laziest holiday I’ve ever seen (and yes, that includes the annual paper lantern parade to celebrate the October Revolution – which was, funnily enough, held in November).

Hint at ZOS: when the most exciting thing about the holiday is the return of last year’s lockboxes into the cash shop, maybe it would be the right moment to replace your event designer team. ;)

But that’s ESO. They haven’t added anything meaningful or interesting to the game since thieves guild and they just gave up on that.

Good try, well played. Completely wrong but a brave attempt nontheless.

That hasn’t been my experience, I actually have never bothered with the Thieves Guild, how ever the Dark Brotherhood that’s different. I love going through ESO as a serial killer that gets credit for quests while murdering every NPC around me, I can justify it by doing a contract every once in awhile. There’s also been a lot of new story content and at least half a dozen to a dozen new 4 Mans and double the raids.

You’re right though I must be doing something wrong, I just don’t get how I’m being ripped off, oh dear.

That said I don’t want to be one of those tools that says my MMO is better than yours so is there anything you’re playing with more robust play styles you could recommend, I’m always open for something new and engaging as long as it isn’t a gank box.

Sadly in the mmo world there isn’t much that offers a wide variety of experiences besides kill this gather that. Like I said, eso was on to something with the thieving system but it feels half finished. As far as meaningful content, once you’ve quested through one zone you’ve quested through then all. The xpacs didn’t really offer much, a new class is nice but in a game like eso its really 3 skill trees with the same alpha quality spell effects.

I am hard on eso because honestly I really want to like this game but it’s failed so much on execution. I love the ES series and I really like a lot of what eso has to offer but it’s just so paper thin besides lore.

AC odessey is pretty good .

Agreed, the Halloween event is just utterly poor and lazy. I love the New Years event though. But the “grind boss mobs to receive RNG boxes with hopefully something you don’t have for once, good luck with the chances set though” is just brazenly arrogant as in “We can get away with it, you’ll pay anyway”.

I’m with Zora, but SWTOR did have one the first year it came around. Well, I wouldn’t call it an event actually, but there was something.

Devs caved in to pressure from a vocal minority at the time to do something for Halloween. And what did they do? They offered a Jackolantern Healing Chamber in the cash shop. Yes, the “event” was one or two items in the cash shop which caused even more uproar on the forums.

So, the lesson learned was, don’t half-ass an event. Hmm, but was it really?

BTW, I have no issue with SWTOR not having a Halloween event. It was an opportunity to get creative and come up with SWTOR specific event or holiday. Call it… Almalawenya. A galaxy-wide holiday observation in which, by tradition, you pants your friends and neighbors.

My soul is still scarred from Life Day and The Star Wars Holiday Special, so I’d be grateful if the franchise never got creative with a holiday or event ever again.

Lol! Good point.

Probably the game that I remember sucked at Holiday events, that would be Rift. Odds are there will be Death Rifts as far as the eye can see, and Fire Rifts with nothing but Hellbugs because it has the word Hell in it.

Either that or more parades playing crappy music dragging Dragon Balloons in the starting zones.

Rift doesn’t really do Halloween though right? It did the fae-themed harvest festival route but it never did actual death like Halloween stuff (I always thought they should re-run the River of Souls event or something like it annually). Unless they’re changing that up this year?

River of Souls does feel appropriate doesn’t it.

I wouldn’t say the event itself was bad, but last year’s Hallow’s Eve event in WoW was definitely bad for me at the time. I was just starting out in the game as a Human and trying to learn the ropes with this big noisy battle with the Headless Horseman dropping on my face every hour. Worst part was that no matter where you were in the zone, you could hear every one of the Horseman’s taunts. Drove me nuts.

Any one they just repeat year after year.

So all of them then.

Pretty much. I don’t mind the repeats as long as they add something new that isn’t just a hat recolor.

I have this vision of earning a David S Pumpkins costume in the same content from GW2 or TSW.

SWTOR hands down

…because there isn’t actually one *mutters*

yeah… adding a Halloween event in Star Wars is just a bad idea… look at how awful it was in SWG Halloween in Star Wars feels really out of place.

Reader
Zora

They added rakghouls because heavens forbid there’s some game that does -not- have zombies, I doubt they cared about “out of place” to begin with :P

Witches

Rakghouls were present in the original KOTOR, the Taris storyline pubside is about the old undercity settlers and the rakghoul plague.

Honestly? I love the holiday so much I’m hard-pressed to think of one that was really bad.

I suppose the most underwhelming has been FFXIV’s All Saints’ Wake recently. But then again, there are bare few ways one can top getting a flying broom for a mount, which was one of the rewards from the 2015 event.
