Warframe’s Fortuna expansion widens the open world this November

21
We’ve finally got a launch window for the Fortuna update that Warframe’s Digital Extremes first revealed at TennoCon this past summer: It’s coming next month, at least on PC.

“Canadian developer and publisher Digital Extremes is headed to the stars with its newest update: The Warframe team announced today it will release the open-world expansion Fortuna, for free, this November on Steam PC. Built on an imaginative science fiction terrain, Fortuna’s Venusian landscape is four to five times bigger than Plains of Eidolon (last year’s popular open-world update), and brings a different Orokin-infused look, feel and experience to Warframe’s growing universe. Tenno (players’ name in-game) will follow the Solaris United faction’s struggle against their Corpus overlords by picking up bounties and missions underground in the internment camp of Fortuna, and, using the new K-Drive hoverboard, will get wicked across exotic new terrain peppered with Orokin structures, towering mushroom stands, and oceanic flora.”

DE does note that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will lag a bit behind (“this winter”), plus we’re all still expecting the Switch edition on November 20th.

pfft. Warframe has no”open worlds”. Stop trying to scam people. ridiculous. its a common city hub where you join a group and go into an instanced map. one of hundreds of instances with a whopping 5 players on it. thats not open world so stop it.

They simply mean that the whole zone is an open area as opposed to the usual corridor style tile sets used in Warframe.

And to be honest, most MMOs are going away from true ‘Open World’ in favor of ‘Instanced World’. WoW is the most recent to do that with multiple instances of zones and the whole game instanced out for PvP vs PvE. It just looks seamless due to WoW dynamic grouping mechanisms where friends and groups automatically go into the same instance of a zone.

GW2 has had this instanced zone tech for quite a while, and barely a game session goes by without being told to move to another zone instance for a 10min buff.

I dunno, 9 sq/km with an associated underworld of caves seems awfully open to me.

Plains of Eidolon like Fortuna are very big instances. Like every other open world area in every other game is technically just a big instance. Max. players allowed in is limited to 4.
I seriously fail to spot the scam here. It is as open a world as can be – just not massively multiplayer open.

Open world means a persistent zone/area. Instanced means a zone/area that is duplicated to exist for a limited period of time and players, aka non persistent. Why do people not get this simple concept ?

All of Warframe zones/areas are instanced and just because Eidolon is a big instance does not make it open world. The funny part is the developer never claimed it was open world, that is a label game journalists have put on it (who btw are supposed to know these facts). And yes I freaking love Warframe.. but IT IS NOT OPEN WORLD!!!!
Now excuse me, I have a Khora to level.

Thanks for the clarify but for even us that already know we really don’t lose sleep over it anymore. It’s like when you read someone say that WOW was the first mmo. Today’s relevance for everyone is as Ironwu explains above.

Khora is next on my list, i have a problem clicking with other frames as Nova is still and will always be #1, even though she can do it all, there are better tool kits for some jobs.

I still like Ivara obv for her advantage but my Zephyr took a massive nose dive after unlimited arch wings launches in the plains, so going to give Khora a spin to mix things up, then want to work on a kick ass Eidolon hunter, even though it’s mostly pumping up your operator focus and amp, candidates for frames include Chroma, Volt, maybe even an Oberon, Harrow.

“Open world” and “persistence” are not the same thing. Sorry.

A game can be instanced *and* open. A game can be persistent and *not* open.

GTA 5 is open world and certainly not persistent.

I was going to watch that stream, too caught up playing, literally totally planned to catch that, next thing i know it’s 9pm missed by two hours.

Built my first amp last night, didn’t get to use it much but it felt much more powerful than then the started one.

Getting a lot done in the plains, mining, fishing, moving up with the Ostrum, Quill, still need to make my first Zaw.

November, yea i should be ready for new content by then, i hope :)

Hopefully you picked up some of those Plague Zaw parts during the latest operation!

Fishing is easily the best way to get rep. Like by a huge margin. Murkray fishing requires bait but for lowbie-status Ostron grinding it works like a charm. With a resource booster…wow. You can rake’em in.

I’d have to check but knowing me, probably not lol. Now i would, lol.

I was so excited when my first Murkray showed up, using the Lanzo is better than the Tulok which i was using 100% until i needed Murkray Liver. The game is so involved, deep, which is why i’m loving it.

I used to fire up Warframe, then play. Now i start up the Warframe Wiki, then Warframe and play. Constantly looking stuff up, i thought games like this were long forgotten.

I buy the access pack, and with it comes a couple months of boosts, i found out that funny enough, brown resource boosters are the only ones that help. Agreed, very good tip.

Quill i’m only Observer need 4 more Eidolon Shard’s, Ostron i’m Surah. Mining and fishing become so important. I at least took the Advanced Nosam Cutter as a reward not realizing at the time it’s 20k rep.

Feeling lucky though as i’m only now starting out with more dedicated time in the Plains and the ArchWing change couldn’t have come at a better time, totally changed the way you play there. Although it did put my Zephyr on stand by for the time being, still a welcome change.

So excited! :D

Though I still think they should’ve made the trailer long enough for the full song.

Steve tweeted a vid clip showing an aerial view of the whole Orb Vallis map, can’t wait to start exploring:

Other news from the devstream was a vacuum mod for kavats and kubrows (finally!), completely changing the way mining works (new & quicker minigame, better ore & gem rewards), showing off Fortuna’s custom build pet moas a bit more (they’ll be able to use most sentinel mods and weapons, as well as having some unique precepts of their own), and showing off Garuda who looks bloody gore-geous – far more suited to the Vlad nickname than Revenant was given all the blood and impalement!

Also, have just done the Hallowed Nightmares tactical alert (which has a time-attack challenge mode once you’ve completed it) and it is legit terrifying. I recommend bringing Khora for it if you’ve got her, and be prepared to do a lot of ressing…

Mind giving some details on what you mean by that?

Yea wish i never thumbed that up, read it wrong, too quick, super busy lately and tons of Warframe news, lol, but yea huh? What do you mean by that?

The angles, the animations, everything. I remember making WoW videos on a similar scale. It doesn’t look like there is anything scripted in the trailer, just captured regular footage and poorly made into a cinematic.

I would expect more from Warframe, this looks like it was done in a haste.
