A story of rags to recovery (not quite riches) thanks to Warframe’s player-made content

Let it all out.

Artist Frelling Hazmot is doing all right these days. He’s paying back debts and making do with a rather substantial income. It’s a far cry from where he was in September 2016, when he found out that one of his designs was going to be officially put up for sale as part of Warframe’s TennoGen program, a system allowing artists to design elements for the game and then be sold for money. And the whole story is, well, pretty excellent.

It’s a testament to the utility of the program, the enthusiasm of fans, and the community surrounding the game as a whole; he went from being unable to find meaningful employment and subsiding on assistance to being able to afford what he needed, pay back his debts, and start thinking about the future after his first Syandana scarf took off in popularity. It’s probably the happiest thing you’ll read about a space ninja scarf all day; that is probably a narrow category, but it’s a happy story even if it’s also the only space ninja scarf story of the day.

The Tennogen stuff is great. Anytime I’m gifted a Steam card, it inevitably gets spent on Tennogen skins. The voting and review process ensures that it’s not just a sea of re-colors, stolen IP prints, and junk. It’s basically paid mods, but done right. I’m happy the creators are getting a healthy enough cut of the proceeds to make it worthwhile for them – they do great work.

Yep, Tennogen is big business. Another prominent artist supposedly makes enough to live on just by doing Tennogen stuff. I certainly spend quite a bit on it. More than I should but less that I want, heh.

More than I should but less that I want

I hear that. To date I have purchased four Tennogen items, and I NEVER buy cosmetics in my MMOs. In Warframe, I want like HALF of what I see, and I seriously consider buying it.

Some of the designs are, quite frankly, the best armor/character design I’ve ever seen in a video game, ever.

All i ever see is a half dozen weapon skins, never anything else?

You have to play through Steam to see the Tennogen stuff. Maybe that’s the problem?

That could be it. TONS of Tennogen purchaseable thru Steam client. The Nezha Empyrean skin is **head explodes**

OK to play a non Warframe account through steam all you need to do is download Warframe in steam, then launch it through steam, and use your creds.

Only adding this for anyone whom may come along this in the future, no you don’t have to do all those registry changes, swapping files, the things you find sometimes, makes it so hard and way overly complex when it couldn’t be easier.

One of my favs was after upgrading to ssd noticed a slight improvement? Was still on ide or pata, ok wow switching this to ahci is a huge deal, after reading, bcedit, registry changes, blue screen of death horror stories, format start over, i find this little post, use mscofig (boot safe), switch to achi in bios, continue safe boot to windows, uncheck msconfig (boot safe), reboot, done. Seriously that’s it? Yep, worked like a charm! lol

I might check it out on the weekend.

Well that sucks. Yes that is the problem then, i don’t play anything through steam that don’t have to. I might hook Warframe through steam but extremely unlikely I will.

It’s not that i hate steam, i was on steam when it had barely any games at all. Was a huge supporter for digital downloads. I recently bought Fallout 4 on it, dunno pet peeve i guess, launching this to then launch that, why? Just launch the game, lol – Total pet peeve.

I completely understand. I resisted playing through Steam for a long time. I finally gave in just so I could buy one of the Tennogen skins for Mag and there was no going back for me.

I’m sure i’ll cave, for Warframe only, lol.

Almost did for SWL, there was something you get through steam, but i didn’t and mainly as it was a one way trip.

Here? It really seems like you can go back and forth?

As far as I know, based on my searches, you should be able to unlink Warframe from Steam and keep any Tennogen skins that you purchased. You would lose only the ability to purchase additional Tennogen after you unlink your accounts. Tennogen is the only thing affected by Steam – you’re not locking your Warframe account to Steam.

There are also instructions for launching it as a standalone, even when it was installed through Steam, in case your issue with the linkage is something like wanting your Steam account to be available to someone else while you’re playing Warframe.

Hey Thanks!

Yep that’s the reason i never took SWL through steam, it becomes a permanent steam game after, which is…

No it’s not about having available for someone either, it’s literally a pet peeve, i like steam, but do i have to run everything through it kind of peeve.

only example:It’s like

ok time to play, start steam, ok thanks for all the advertisement, oh wait a steam update ok, restart steam, updating… ok great more ads wonderful, and ok finally start Warframe and play.

or start Warframe and play.

It’s always nice to see something positive with regards to a game. Too much negativity in the world unfortunately. This was nice to read.
